Dear Editor,
It is a huge shame and a tragedy that America's Congress and our State Department has conspired to cut funds from UNESCO because of Palestine's efforts to become a member state. Rep. Ileana Ros's declaration that “Today’s reckless action by UNESCO is anti-Israel and anti-peace,” and her fully supporting a cut off of funds is rampantly anti-America and anti-peace.
US law and foreign policy should not be crafted to further oppress and persecute harshly oppressed and persecuted people. America should not be endorsing and/or ignoring Israel's rampant institutionalized bigotry and the continued harassment and displacement of the native non-Jewish population of the Holy Land.
A negotiated end to the Israel/Palestine conflict requires [building] a sovereign Palestinian state. Undermining and sabotaging and demonizing Palestinian efforts to join the international community of nations is cruel punishment to a people already enduring Israel's belligerent violations of international law and the Palestinians basic human rights.
Sincerely,
Anne Selden Annab
