Families are struggling to survive amid the devastation. Israel’s ban on international NGOs will worsen this disaster: The Guardian view on Gaza’s winter [ISRAEL'S WAR ON PALESTINIANS]... the world must take heed as Palestinian suffering deepens again

As Gaza enters the bleakest period of winter, children are dying of hypothermia, drowning in flooded camps and burning to death as their families try to cook in flimsy tents. Israel destroyed nine out of 10 homes over more than two years of war. Camped amid the ruins, Palestinians struggle against strong winds, heavy rain and freezing temperatures. Aid deliveries resumed following the ceasefire, staving off the famine that had taken hold in parts of the territory, but remain wholly insufficient: 1.6 million people face acute food insecurity. The sanitation infrastructure has collapsed.

The UK, Canada, Japan, France and six other nations have jointly warned that the situation is catastrophic. Yet Israel is now deepening one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises. On Tuesday, it announced that it is deregistering 37 NGOs active in Gaza. They must cease all operations there by 1 March unless they meet its new “security and transparency standards” – including by disclosing the personal details of staff. Many of the listed groups are among the best-regarded in their field, including Oxfam, Médecins Sans Frontières and the Norwegian Refugee Council.

Volker Türk, the UN human rights chief, was right to describe this as outrageous – and as part of a pattern of unlawful restrictions on humanitarian access. Israeli NGOs have warned that it breaks the principles of independence and neutrality for humanitarian organisations.

Israel says that the measures are necessary to prevent NGOs employing staff with links to extremist groups. It has repeatedly claimed that Hamas has infiltrated aid organisations and exploited international aid, while providing little evidence. Given the many relief workers arbitrarily detained and killed since the war began, the demand for staff lists has prompted alarm. Israel has reportedly refused requests for meetings on the issue.

Meanwhile, as Israel bars life-saving supplies such as tent poles and generators from humanitarian shipments, claiming they could be exploited for military purposes, it allows traders to bring such items into the territory. While ordinary Palestinians suffer, players inside and outside the territory profit financially and politically. US officers in Israel have reportedly urged that key items, including tent poles, be removed from the blacklist – without success... "... What other ethnic group would be treated with such indifference or ignorance or bias? Especially a devastated population, with the heaviest casualties among babies and children, by U.S.-made weapons. " Ralph Nader

The media’s continued indifference to the massive under death count of Palestinians in Gaza at the hands of the genocidal Netanyahu—embraced for the 5th time this year at the White House—by Dictator Trump. The total death count coming from the most intense bombardment and starvation (food, water, medicine and healthcare) of a human population in military history in the tiny enclave is not nearly 70,000. It’s about 600,000—or slightly over a quarter of the civilian population.

Born in Connecticut in 1934, RALPH NADER has spent his lifetime challenging corporations and government agencies to be more accountable to the public. His 1965 book Unsafe at Any Speed permanently altered the course of a reckless U.S. automobile industry and made Nader a household name. His lobbying and writing on the food industry helped to ensure that the food we buy is required to pass strict guidelines before reaching the consumer. One of Nader’s greatest achievements was his successful lobbying for a 1974 amendment to the Freedom of Information Act, which gave increased public access to government documents. Over the years he has co-founded the public interest groups Public Citizen, Critical Mass, Commercial Alert, and the Center for the Study of Responsive Law. His 2000 presidential campaign on the Green Party ticket served to broaden the scope of debate on the nation’s priorities. Named by the Atlantic as one of the hundred most influential figures in American history, Nader continues to be a relentless advocate for grassroots activism and democratic change. He lives in Washington, D.C.

UNRWA Commissioner-General on New Anti‑UNRWA Legislation Passed by the Israeli Parliament

The United Nations flag is seen flying above the UNRWA compound in East Jerusalem, shortly before Israeli officials tore it down and replaced it with the Israeli flag on 8 December 2025

AMMAN

“Yesterday’s vote by the Israeli parliament passing new legislation against UNRWA is outrageous. It is a direct affront to the mandate granted to the Agency by the UN General Assembly and contrary to findings of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which oblige Israel to fulfil its responsibilities as a UN Member State to UNRWA and the broader UN system.

The legislation cuts off water, electricity, fuel, and communications from UNRWA and grants the government of Israel authority to expropriate UN properties in East Jerusalem, including UNRWA’s headquarters and its main vocational training centre.

Furthermore, the bill explicitly excludes UNRWA from Israeli law enacting Israel’s obligations under the Convention on the Privileges and Immunities of the United Nations. This stands in clear violation of the State of Israel’s obligations under international law.

This latest move extends the laws passed last year and implemented since January 2025 that banned UNRWA’s operations in occupied East Jerusalem and halted all contact between Israeli officials and UNRWA.

The new legislation is a further blow to the multilateral system. It is part of an ongoing, systematic campaign to discredit UNRWA and thereby obstruct the core role that the Agency plays in providing human-development assistance and services to Palestine Refugees. Services which the ICJ has ruled are essential for delivering on the UN’s commitment to the rights of the Palestinian people, including their right to self-determination.

In October, the ICJ restated that the State of Israel is obliged under international law to facilitate UNRWA’s operations, not hinder or prevent them. This new legislation is an unacceptable rejection of the ICJ’s findings.

Israel is obliged to act within the UN framework and not take unilateral action contrary to its obligations under the UN Charter. Should Israel dispute the actions of UNRWA, it must refer the issue to the UN’s deliberative bodies and seek a decisive ruling from the ICJ. A failure to do so disrespects the procedures critical to the operation of the UN system.

Despite Israel’s obligations, these legislative steps have been accompanied by unilateral actions on the ground that show a repeated disregard for international law.

Earlier this month, Israeli officials stormed UNRWA’s compound in East Jerusalem – which is a UN premises – and tore down the UN flag, replacing it with an Israeli flag. And in May, they forced the closure of UNRWA’s schools in East Jerusalem, depriving hundreds of Palestine Refugee children of their right to education.

Israel’s unilateral actions are having a direct operational and legal impact on UNRWA’s services in the occupied Palestinian territory, including in Gaza, where the Agency is the backbone of the international humanitarian operation. As Gaza, the West Bank, and the wider region continue to face conflict and turmoil, UNRWA – more than ever – is irreplaceable.

Legislation against UNRWA is also a further setback to efforts to reach a just and lasting diplomatic solution to the decades’ long Israeli-Palestinian conflict.   Pending such a solution, UNRWA is mandated to provide services, especially health and education, to Palestine Refugees.

The rights of Palestine Refugees exist separate to UNRWA, under international human rights law, international humanitarian law, and UN General Assembly resolutions, including Resolution 194, adopted in 1948, a year before UNRWA was created in Resolution 302. Even if UNRWA no longer existed, these rights would endure.

The current and earlier legislation passed by the Israeli parliament also rejects the principal obligation of UN Member States to respect the UN’s independence and its privileges and immunities. It creates a grave precedent for other conflict situations where governments may wish to eliminate an inconvenient UN presence.

It therefore targets not just UNRWA, but any individual or entity calling for compliance with international law and a peaceful political solution. Failing to push back against attempts to intimidate and undermine the UN in the occupied Palestinian territory will eventually compromise humanitarian and human rights work worldwide. “

His grandparents had moved to Nur Shams after their original displacement from the cities of Jaffa and Haifa during the 1948 war surrounding Israel's creation, when some 700,000 Palestinians were expelled from their homes by forces of the nascent state or fled as troops advanced, an event Palestinians call the Nakba, or "catastrophe." Palestinians watch as Israeli bulldozers claw down their West Bank homes

NUR SHAMS REFUGEE CAMP, West Bank (AP) — Palestinians in the Israeli-occupied West Bank watched as Israeli military bulldozers pulled down their homes Wednesday as part of a nearly year-long incursion into the territory's northern refugee camps.

The scene in Nur Shams has been repeated often across the northern West Bank in the roughly 11 months since Israeli troops launched operation "Iron Wall" there in early 2025. During that time, the military has demolished or heavily damaged at least 850 structures across the refugee camps of Nur Shams, Jenin and Tulkarem, according to an analysis of satellite imagery by Human Rights Watch.

Troops have also forced out the camps' populations, leading to the largest displacement in the West Bank since Israel captured the territory in 1967. Tens of thousands of residents are living with relatives, cramming into rental apartments or living in public buildings.... Dear America, Our land and resources are being gobbled up for AI data centers for what purpose? Is it for the greater good of tax paying citizens- or is it to feed the greed of corporations and companies that already use our data to charge us as much as they can at every turn.

Pennsylvania Data Center Partners and PowerHouse Data Centers are planning a $15 billion data center campus in the Carlisle area, alongside the scenic Conodoguinet Creek, Central Pennsylvania

letter I just sent to my elected leaders- HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Dear America,

Our land and resources are being gobbled up for AI data centers for what purpose?   Is it for the greater good of tax paying citizens- or is it to feed the greed of corporations and companies that already use our data to charge us as much as they can at every turn.

The game is being rigged to impoverish and destroy select individuals and families here, there, and soon everywhere. Fees now- maybe bulldozers later as those in power misuse their position for miserly motives- or vengeance against those they do not like... as in state sponsored racist hate or misogyny.

FYI Israel has been freely using AI to destroy the people of historic Palestine, in tandem with deploying propaganda to silence and systematically impoverish good and decent people who object to the blatant injustice and violence that Zionism inspires.   All Israel has to do is accuse an individual of being or supporting HAMAS and BAM another journalist is killed and more Palestinian homes are demolished AND more and more Palestinian land is usurped.

All Israel has to do is posit disinformation accusing an aid group of harboring HAMAS and BAM aid funding is stopped- and Palestinian babies starve and freeze to death.

Why are our Congress and our President so willing to be conned and manipulated by Israel?!!!

A human rights rules based order providing food and shelter for starving people is being destroyed because Israel wants the land- but not the native non-Jewish people of that land.

The United Nations & Golden Rule thinking are being sabotaged intentionally, just as our own Congress and our Fourth Estate has been corrupted and crippled by a very foreign country that wants our money and weaponry- but not our ideals of real freedom, justice, and equality.

Keep in mind the fact that data center hardware will be obsolete in less than a decade- filling up and polluting our landfills.  Costing us more and more in many ways as the decades pass: A data center consumes enough power in a day to power a small city- think of all the pollution that will produce... all for what?!!!

All for AI and Israel- the most pervasive con jobs in our modern world.

We should be investing in people and diversity and jobs- real jobs- real justice- Golden Rule thinking and being... not war, injustice, Billionaire greed, and AI tricks

Sincerely,

Anne Selden Annab

More rain. More human misery, despair and death. Harsh winter weather is compounding more than two years of suffering. People in Gaza are surviving in flimsy, waterlogged tents and among ruins. Israel must let UNRWA aid into Gaza ... UNRWA has food, shelter, medical and other essential supplies outside of Gaza - enough to reach hundreds of thousands of people facing the harsh winter. This aid has been blocked by Israeli Authorities since March. Refusing to let it in is a choice – one that deprives people inside Gaza of the means to survive and recover. UNRWA's 12,000 team members are working tirelessly inside Gaza... But letting the blocked aid in would enable them to multiply their operations massively.

1939, Iqrit, Palestine - At the time of their eviction in November 1948, Iqrit was home to 491 residents, the majority of whom 432 were Melkite (Greek Catholic) Christians living throughout the village, the remaining 59 Muslim inhabitants either rented homes in Iqrit or had built houses in the nearby area of esh-Shafaya. By 1948, the villagers collectively owned around 600 dunams (approximately 600,000 m²) of private land. Much of this area was covered with fig groves that served both the people of Iqrit and neighboring communities....
