"The Immigrant" a painting by Sliman Mansour of Palestine

Sliman Mansour painting The immigrant (المهاجرة), oil on canvas, 2017

"The scene in this painting presents a significant contrast, as though a woman fled her hometown and found herself estranged in a large and Western metropolis city. The painting expresses the tremendous attachment to Palestine that Palestinians in exile hold dear in their hearts, which only grows the longer they reside in the diaspora. This picture might also represent the deep emotional connection Arabs across the world share towards the Palestinian struggle and inherit one generation to the next." Sliman Mansour

John Hanna Asfour- a Christian Palestinian... a bit of historical context ... True story by Raymond Khoury

John Hanna Asfour wedding in Haifa, Palestine
True story by

 A bit of historical context:

This is my grandfather's house in Haifa, which he built in 1934. His name was John Hanna Asfour, a Christian Palestinian. Our family tree records there go back over two centuries. That's him at his wedding.

A prominent, successful lawyer, he hired a Jewish architect, Moshe Gerstel, to design his home. Gerstel was an immigrant from Europe who had just arrived in Palestine, and my grandfather generously gave him his first job there.

In 1948, after my grandfather's assistant was murdered and his dead body was dumped outside the house, he sent his wife and five children (including my mom, who was 13 at the time) to safety in Egypt. He had to follow them a few weeks later.

They never returned.

His house eventually became an officers' club of the Israeli army (sorry, "defence force"--such brilliant marketing). Today it is an architecturally preserved site. He and his family were never offered any restitution. They lost everything.

They were among the lucky ones.

They never had to live in refugee camps, eat scraps, have no travel documents, or suffer humiliation and brutality on a daily basis.

A dehumanising narrative has been promoted since then that Palestine before 1948 was a barren desert, ripe for a miraculous upgrade. It wasn't. Its people were not bedouins or primitive savages. It was a thriving, well educated, sophisticated twentieth century society. But its people lost a battle for their land. And as we know, history is written by the victors.

What happened two weeks ago was tragic, abhorrent, barbaric. But when an entire people is brutalised for decades under a vicious apartheid occupation that has no comparable in this 21st century, and the media and governments who could make things right like the US and UK don't just consistently turn a blind eye to that ongoing tragedy but support it with weapon supplies, perhaps it shouldn't come as such a shock that hopelessness can lead to extreme rage and, sadly, bloodshed...

It never ceases to amaze me how the victims of a horrific genocide could so quickly and heartlessly turn around and bulldoze through another people, like the victims of child abuse who turn into abusers. And be totally oblivious to the parallel.

Empathy is tragically selective. The world cheered the Sioux in Dances with Wolves, the Na'vi in Avatar, the rebels fighting the empire in Star Wars. Hell, we're now even cheering the AI robots in The Creator (see it). But in real life, the stormtroopers are winning.

But I see a faint glimmer of hope, that if not the governments of the US and UK, but at least the people, a lot of people, are now waking up to this tragedy, seeing and starting to understand what's been happening for decades, thanks to social media and despite the odious censorship and more insidious shadow blocking being done.

This is my grandfather's house in Haifa, which he built in 1934. His name was John Hanna Asfour, he was a Christian Palestinian. Our family tree records there go back over two centuries.

If I must die... a poem by Refaat Alareer

Many Palestinian families still have the keys to the houses they left in 1948.

"Many Palestinian families still have the keys to the houses they left in 1948. They took the keys with them because they were told by Israeli forces that they would be able to return home after a few weeks. That never happened; instead, they became permanent refugees. (Today, the Palestinian diaspora extends from Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria to the Gulf Arab countries and the West, while some Palestinians are citizens of Israel, making up roughly 20 percent of the country’s population.)" Sigal Samuel

Palestinians fear they’re being displaced permanently. Here’s why that’s logical.

Dear President Biden RE our militant "friend" Israel

America's Statue of Liberty - Liberty Enlightening the World

 Dear President Biden,

Thanks to Israel, our once firm stand on higher ground has slowly but surely become quicksand underfoot, as all the Middle East, China and Russia are fully aware of our hypocrisy and stupidity in world affairs.

UN Security Council just failed to adopt a resolution urging humanitarian ceasefire & unhindered aid into Gaza: 4 votes FOR (China, Gabon, Russia, UAE) & 2 Against (UK,US)... 9 Abstained (Albania, Brazil,Ecuador, France, Ghana, Japan, Malta, Mozambique, Switzerland)

That vote clearly proclaims to the world that China and Russia (who are geographically closer to Israel & Gaza) value human life, whereas the UK and the US are far away islands increasingly isolated and mired in hypocrisy and corruption.

Is that really the message you want to send to the world!

Do not let Gaza become the grave yard for international law- and the United Nations. I believe in America- I believe in our ideals and our democracy. But our ideals and our democracy, our Fourth Estate, our academic freedom and our diversity, our economic future and prosperity are all being undermined and destroyed by our militant "friend"  Israel.

Maybe, after all, our American ideals and democracy are actually a big fat lie- a fiction propped up to camouflage rampant greed and corruption by American leadership, as well as a way to ensure there will be wage slaves for ongoing racist wars and corporate greed.

Time will tell, and so will our actions and words: Ignoring Israel's blatant and long term violations of international law and the Palestinians' basic human rights has not bode well for universal justice or peace.

Israel's cruel decades long war on the native non-Jewish People of historic Palestine is racist and wrong.  We should know better.  We should not be funding, arming, or excusing Israel's ethnic cleansing and genocide of Arabs all through out the Holy Land... and in my book all land on earth is Holy, and all people are human beings deserving respect and equal rights.

Sincerely

Anne Selden Annab

WEST BANK

Oct 23, 2023

“Israeli forces are increasingly and brazenly killing Palestinian children throughout the West Bank,” said Ayed Abu Eqtaish, accountability program director at DCIP. “At this moment, there is absolutely no check on Israeli aggression as the international community enables war crimes through the provision of weapons and financial and diplomatic support to ensure Israeli forces and officers enjoy impunity regardless of the gravity of crimes.”

"Under international law, intentional lethal force is only justified in circumstances where a direct threat to life or of serious injury is present. However, investigations and evidence collected by DCIP regularly suggest that Israeli forces use lethal force against Palestinian children in circumstances that may amount to extrajudicial or wilful killings."

I’m a Palestinian citizen of Israel. Right now, that’s as complex as you could possibly imagine

Maria Rashed

Let’s be clear: one can support Palestinians’ right to resist and end the occupation without supporting Hamas

"One thing that unites Palestinians is that our journey is never easy or smooth. To be a Palestinian citizen in Israel is exceptionally challenging – especially at the moment, when people expect you to take a clear, one-sided stance. I am forced to constantly question where I truly belong, feeling nowhere and everywhere simultaneously.

I was born and raised in Nazareth in a Christian family. Later, I moved to Tel Aviv, living in a diverse community with Arabs and Jews. Although I was born in Israel, I struggle to identify fully with a country that views me as a second-class citizen, publicly speaks against Arabs, oppresses Palestinians – and the list goes on."

America: Live Up to Your Own Principles When Dealing with Palestine

I admire the stated principles of the United States of America. I want it to live up to them.

Daoud Kuttab/

October 24, 2023

"While Palestinians, like all people under occupation, have an internationally legitimate right to resist their occupiers, the atrocities, whether by Palestinian fighters or others, are wrong, and they need to be called out and condemned. I add my voice without reservation in condemning war crimes against civilians. All humans are created in God’s image, and we are called by our maker to preserve life, not to end it.

Fairness and equality, however, require that everyone who has demanded the condemnation of acts by nonstate actors like Hamas must also be willing to demand the same from state actors.

Hamas committed war crimes, according to Amnesty International Secretary-General Agnès Callamard. But experts say that Israel’s blockade of Gaza and ordered evacuation violate international law as well. “Collective punishment is a war crime. Israel is doing that by cutting electricity, water, food, blocking aid from entering the Gaza Strip,” said Human Rights Watch’s Omar Shakir."

An Open Letter from Palestinian Christians to Western Church Leaders and Theologians

"Time and again, we are reminded that western attitudes towards Palestine-Israel suffer from a glaring double standard that humanizes Israeli Jews while insisting on dehumanizing Palestinians and whitewashing their suffering. This is evident in general attitudes towards the recent Israeli attack on the Gaza Strip that killed thousands of Palestinians, the apathy towards the murder of the Palestinian-American Christian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh in 2022, and the killing of more than 300 Palestinians including 38 children in the West Bank this year before this recent escalation."

The Beauty of Palestine

About all that we can do to stop the genocide is to write to our representatives.

I urge all Palestinian-Americans to do so. Include a bit of your personal history. It doesn't even take long as we know our histories and are united in our revulsion of seeing most of our representatives do little to stop the slaughter. I've sent edited versions of this to my congressman and senators, also.

Dear President Biden,

I am a Palestinian-American Christian.

My father immigrated to the US in 1951. He is from Ramallah, Palestine, which was a predominantly Christian village until an influx of Palestinians sought refuge in Ramallah in 1948 because of the ethnic cleansing which took place throughout Palestine at the hands of the Zionist gangs. And no, it was not a result of the Arab armies; according to Dr. Salman Abu Sitta, a prominent Palestinian writer and engineer, fully two-thirds of Palestinians were expelled from their towns and villages before any Arab armies entered Palestine. Israel assured that no Palestinians would return by demolishing over four hundred villages and towns. See a pattern here?

I was impressed with your reading of poetry and thought that you were a good guy. I no longer feel that way. I am appalled that in your position you won't call off the wholesale slaughter of Palestinian babies and children, women and men. My God, they are without fuel, water, food. Religious institutions and hospitals, doctors, health care workers, ambulance drivers and responders are targeted. Your lack of action is repugnant and criminal. I've never felt more ashamed to be an American than I am now.

In spite of the anguish of witnessing trembling children and mourning parents; in spite of the desire to just give in to hopelessness and despair, I still urge you to demand a ceasefire and to learn about the history of Palestine so that you know that Palestinian actions did not occur out of nowhere.

You can still make right seventy-five years of colonization, oppression, and dehumanization of Palestinians. I urge you to do so for the sake of humanity, for the sake of us all: Jews, Palestinians, Muslims, Christians.

Sincerely,
Nancy Harb Almendras

Israeli Occupation- Gaza, Palestine 2023

Don’t quibble w/ me about the meaning of genocide. If this isn’t genocide, then what is? Palestinians were expelled to Gaza in 48 & now they are being devastated one more time. What Hamas did was inexcusable, but what Israel has been doing & is doing now is also inexcusable

If a single Jewish-Israeli child were pulled out from beneath a pile of rubble of what used to be her home & obliterated the rest of her family, not a single Western gov’t would not condemn it or try to blame “both sides”. Racism & colonialism explain this. They expect us to die.

Israel just demanded Palestinians evacuate the Al-Quds hospital in Gaza. 400 patients cannot simply evacuate. Neither can the 12,000 Palestinians sheltering inside. Israel has bombed hospitals, schools, churches, and homes. No one in Gaza is safe, no matter where they go.
