How Biden Enabled Israel’s Aggression Toward Gaza—and Iran: Top officials from the previous Administration now express regret over their failure to rein in Netanyahu.

How Biden Enabled Israel’s Aggression Toward Gaza—and Iran

Top officials from the previous Administration now express regret over their failure to rein in Netanyahu.

On March 5, 2024, five months into the war in Gaza, Mirjana Spoljaric, the president of the International Committee of the Red Cross, sent a confidential letter to President Joe Biden. Under the Geneva Conventions, the Red Cross holds a unique responsibility to counsel states about avoiding war crimes. In the letter, which I obtained from a former United States official, Spoljaric reminded Biden that the organization had condemned the “horrific” October 7th massacre of Israelis by Hamas, and remained “relentless” in pressing the group to release the hostages it had taken. But she was now appealing to Biden “with profound alarm” because Israel, which had been pummelling Gaza with heavy munitions since October, was ignoring the Red Cross as never before. “The way the hostilities are being conducted by Israel is incompatible” with the laws of armed conflict, she wrote, “particularly the obligations to protect civilians and distinguish between military targets and civilians or civilian infrastructure, to ensure dignified treatment of detainees and the dead, to protect medical installations and personnel, and to provide and enable access of humanitarian aid.”

Allowing the Red Cross to visit detainees during a war or an occupation is one of the brightest lines established by the Geneva Conventions. Yet, after October 7th, Israel, for perhaps the first time in its history, fully blocked the organization’s access to Palestinian detainees from Gaza and the West Bank, putting it in the company of pariah states such as North Korea and Eritrea; even the warring factions in Yemen allowed Red Cross visits. Spoljaric noted that humanitarian groups and journalists had reported a “massive surge” in the number of Palestinians in Israeli prisons. At least a thousand had been released back into Gaza, and many of them gave accounts of torture, even though the Israeli military had concluded that they were not Hamas fighters. The Times reported that one released detainee, a law student named Fadi Bakr, described being beaten so severely that his genitals turned blue and blood still appeared in his urine weeks later. He said that Israeli guards had played music so loudly that one of his ears bled. (An Israeli military spokesman told the Times that the captors followed “Israeli and international law” and played music at a “low volume,” to prevent detainees from coördinating.) But the Red Cross couldn’t address such allegations: Spoljaric said that Israel had suspended all “legal-operational dialogue.”

To try to influence Hamas to release hostages, Spoljaric had appealed to Qatar and other patrons of the group; she now implored Biden to “bring about an immediate change” in Israel’s conduct. An appendix to the letter cited U.S. laws and Administration policies that prohibited the transferring of weapons likely to be used in war crimes, and Spoljaric urged Biden to withhold weapons “that should not be used in densely populated areas, in light of their devastating humanitarian impacts.” She warned Biden that failing to “uphold minimum standards of humanity” would be a “moral defeat” that “future generations are unlikely to forgive us for failing to avert.”

Two years after Spoljaric’s letter, President Donald J. Trump ordered the U.S. military to join Israel in attacking Iran. Some former senior officials in the Biden Administration told me that, in certain ways, the war in Iran was an extension of the Gaza conflict... In December 2024, Amnesty International concluded in a damning report that Israel is committing a genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.

Senators like Bernie Sanders have been critical of Biden and Trump’s blind support to Israel. In fact, Sanders led several efforts to block arms sales to Israel and has been drawing attention to the dire humanitarian crisis in Gaza. In contrast, Fetterman, who expressed unwavering support to Israel since Oct. 7, spoke in favor of arm transfer to Israel.

New statistics indicate that 6 in 10 Democratic voters now back the Palestinian cause, which translates into a record of 59% of all Democrats. In other words, less than half are sympathetic toward Israel. An estimated 56% of younger Americans, Democrats, and leaning Democrats support a two-state solution.

The Arab American Institute estimates there are 3.7 million Arab Americans. Pennsylvania is home to more than 182,000 and has one of the fastest growing Arab American community in the United States. This community supports an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and sustainable peace in the region."   Mireille Rebeiz, Ph.D, is Chair of Middle East Studies & Associate Professor, Dickinson College.

Don’t just blame Trump [and Republicans] – Democrats paved the way for this campus crackdow. Both parties are responsible for the mess facing Columbia and other institutions

‘Virtually every aspect of the Trump administration’s posture rests on track laid by the Biden administration and the Democratic party.’ Photograph: Dana Edwards/Reuters

"... Even before Trump had a chance to weigh in, Joe Biden immediately characterized the protests at Columbia as “antisemitic” and declared that “order must prevail” on college campuses. Democratic lawmakers put aggressive pressure on the former Columbia University president Minouche Shafik to crush the protests. She ultimately did so with the assistance of New York City’s Democratic mayor, Eric Adams (who justified his clampdown via evidence-free statements that the protests were driven primarily by “outside agitators”). Trump celebrated the pictures and videos of students getting roughed up by the NYPDand, upon Trump’s reclaiming the White House, the justice department interceded on behalf of Adams – making his criminal investigation go away in apparent exchange for the mayor adopting a more aggressive posture on immigration – a move that critics claim is a quid pro quo.

In a similar vein, it was Biden who enshrined the IHRA definition of antisemitism into federal guidance, despite the definition’s author repeatedly describing it as a “travesty” to use this definition to regulate speech and behavior. Building on Biden’s introduction, Trump is poised to sign a bill that would implement this same definition into federal anti-discrimination law – and in the meantime, he’s insisting Columbia and other schools adopt this definition in their own codes of conduct. NYU and Harvard have already taken this step, overriding concerns by civil rights and civil liberties organizations – from the ACLU, to Fire and the AAUP, to Israeli civil rights groups – who stressed that IHRA’s definition is extremely vague and provides strong leeway for institutional stakeholders to censor most critical discussion of Israel, Zionism or Judaism more broadly, by Jews and non-Jews alike.

Likewise, before Trump called upon Columbia to put its Middle East studies programs into receivership, New York’s Democratic governor, Kathy Hochul, took the extraordinary step of demanding that the City University of New York eliminate a job posting for scholars who study Palestine. This is the same type of overreach Trump is exercising at Columbia – politicians setting the agenda for what can be taught and who can be hired – justified on the same grounds.

The Democrats will not save colleges and universities. They have been key partners and pioneers for all of the actions currently being undertaken by the Trump administration in this domain...."  READ MORE https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2025/mar/26/universities-columbia-trump

Mahmoud Khalil: When Speaking for Palestine Becomes a Crime Mahmoud Khalil is a political prisoner and his unlawful detainment is being used to set precedent implementing facisct policies reminiscent of McCarthy Era First Amendment restrictions

Ahmad Ibsais

Mar 12, 2025

Mahmoud Khalil joins a long lineage of political prisoners detained for advocating just causes throughout American history. From Eugene Debs imprisoned for opposing World War I, to Japanese Americans interned during World War II for their heritage alone, to Civil Rights activists like Martin Luther King Jr. who wrote his famous 'Letter from Birmingham Jail' while detained for peaceful protest.

As a Palestinian, I learned very young that our very existence was a form of protest. Every family gathering that turned into a political discussion and every celebration existed in defiance of forces that would rather see us disappear. This is why the detention of Columbia University graduate Mahmoud Khalil strikes at the core of my being—I recognize in his abduction the same suffocating tactics used to silence Palestinians for generations, now deployed on American soil against those who dare speak our name.

Khalil’s detention by ICE agents on March 8, marks a watershed moment in American democracy. As his pregnant wife watched helplessly, government agents took away a legal permanent resident whose only "crime" was serving as a negotiator in campus protests calling for university divestment from companies profiting from Israel's Genocide on Gaza.

Let us be clear: Mahmoud Khalil is a political prisoner—detained not for any recognizable crime, but for criticizing Israel. There is no law against calling for the end of Genocide, nor should there be in a constitutional democracy. Yet the Trump administration has effectively created such a crime, linking legitimate criticism of a colonial state to “antisemitism,” by abducting and detaining a green card holder solely for his political expression.

After Khalil's detention, the official White House Instagram account published an image of him with the words "Shalom Mahmoud" plastered across it—a chilling taunt that reveals the administration's contempt for due process and basic human dignity. His temporary disappearance into the ICE detention system—his lawyers couldn't locate him for over 24 hours—mirrors the tactics of authoritarian regimes worldwide.

What makes this moment particularly dangerous is that it didn't begin with Trump. It was precisely the Biden-Harris administration's demonization of student protesters as antisemitic that laid the groundwork for Trump's assault on Columbia and other universities. In January 2025, a far-right pro-Israel group submitted a list of students with visas to the Trump administration, urging their deportation for pro-Palestine advocacy. Within days, the administration issued an executive order threatening visa revocation for protesters. Secretary of State Marco Rubio made the agenda explicit, writing: "We will be revoking the visas and/or green cards of Hamas supporters in America so they can be deported."

Across American universities, suppression has manifested in student expulsions, organizations being disbanded, and unprecedented surveillance: nine universities have forcibly shut down their Students for Justice in Palestine chapters; Columbia University expelled three students; and UCLA reportedly spent $12 million to surveil and challenge student protesters. This institutional violence mirrors the academic purges of the McCarthy era, when professors were blacklisted for ideological nonconformity.... America should not help Israel commit crimes against humanity.

Untitled (2024) by Alaziz Atef. This Week In Palestine- Ramallah Art Fair 2024

Dear Elected Leaders,

Were you aware that Joe Biden is widely known as "Genocide Joe" for arming Israel as Israel bombed and tortured refugees trapped in Gaza?

I am not sure what your nickname will become as you foolishly continue to fund and arm Israeli violence while cutting funds to pretty much everyone else, including Americans, but I do suspect that in time your choices now will be seen in a very different light... and not a good one.

After the horrors of the Nazi Holocaust the United Nations, The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and UNWRA were established in hopes of shaping fair and just laws and a more peaceful way forward for everyone's sake.

Tragically for all, Israel is in long term and flagrant violation of international law, and has been for decades now.

America should not help Israel commit crimes against humanity.  Jewish people should be safe and equal where ever they might live, here or there, and that should be true of every one regardless of their supposed race or religion... or lack thereof.

Please do not help Israel oppress, persecute, displace and denigrate native non-Jewish Palestinian and Arab men, women and children, and please do not help Israel subsidize and protect armed religious extremists and zealots here or there.

Sincerely,

Anne Selden Annab

My neighbor has spent the past three days sitting over the rubble of what was once his home, grieving the loss of his eldest son. He does nothing but weep, his tears soaking the ruins as he recalls memories of his boy. Every day, he sits in silence, overwhelmed by pain, unable to move on from the devastation around him. When night falls, he slowly returns to his tent, where emptiness and sorrow await him. His grief is a heartbreaking reminder of the human cost of this tragedy, and his tears speak of a love and loss that words cannot capture.

Genocide: The New Normal

by Chris Hedges
Joe Biden’s parting gift of $8 billion in weapons sales to the apartheid state of Israel acknowledges the gruesome reality of the genocide in Gaza. This is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. This is a permanent, endless war designed not to destroy Hamas, or free Israeli hostages, but to eradicate, once and for all, Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank. It is the final push to create a Greater Israel, which will include not only Gaza and the West Bank, but chunks of Lebanon and Syria. It is the culmination of the Zionist dream. And it will be paid for with rivers of blood — Palestinian, Lebanese and Syrian... READ MORE  https://x.com/ChrisLynnHedges/status/1876428286466941427

Silence is Complicity... and silence turns voters off, ensuring that Democracy dies in the darkness.

Protest Sign 2024
Dear Elected Leaders (Biden, Harris,...etc)

We live in a post Nazi-Holocaust world where international law and universal basic human rights are supposed to be respected.  You can not compare what is going on today with the world before WWII, when racism and pseudoscience reigned supreme.

Countless popular books, plays, museums, and movies currently show details of Jewish suffering way back then, but when it was happening few knew.

Today's world has the potential to be fully connected and informed as photos, videos, fact-sheets, stories, & poems clearly show Palestine suffering NOW... RIGHT NOW crimes against humanity are being committed by Israel and in response (horror of horrors) America sends more weapons to Israel.

Meanwhile as the IDF bombs Gaza killing children and destroying homes and refugee camps, Israel's powers that be elect to dismiss and destroy UNWRA, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East.

Did you know that Not ONE DROP OF WATER entered #Jabalia, #BeitLahia & #BeitHanoun since 1 October... thanks to Israel.

If I write the word Apartheid or Genocide minds shut, refusing to believe our friend, Israel, is that bad. After all we have prayers and hymns singing Israel's praises. Never mind that those were written long before modern man made Israel existed.

But Israel is that bad.

UNWRA is good- UNWRA plays a critical role in providing protection, shelter, food, water, and medical care to millions of Palestinian refugees in Gaza, the occupied West Bank, Lebanon, Jordan and Syria.  Not in Israel, but Israel is itching for excuses to further persecute and destroy the native non-Jewish people of historic Palestine.

Israel already targets journalists and medics and UNWRA in order to torment and kill- and get away with it.

Silence is Complicity... and silence turns voters off, ensuring that Democracy dies in the darkness.

Sincerely,

Anne Selden Annab

UN News Global perspective Human stories: Israeli Knesset vote on UNRWA set to deepen Palestinian suffering

The rights of Palestine Refugees exist separate to UNRWA, including the right of return, which was set out in resolution 194, adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1948, and predates the creation of UNRWA in 1949. Besides the right to return, the right to family unity and the right to reparations would also remain in UNRWA’s absence, as would the refugee camps of Gaza and the West Bank.

UNRWA was created by the UN Member States. Today’s decision by the Israeli parliament barring UNRWA from its life-saving and health-protecting work on behalf of millions of Palestinians will have devastating consequences.

Dear America- letter sent to my Elected Leaders,

Time will tell who gets elected next.

Meanwhile time has already told that American leadership does not care about the very real plight and suffering of the native non-Jewish people of historic Palestine. You should.

Israel, heavily armed with American weaponry, freely bombs humanitarian safe zones in Gaza, obliterating refugee tents, leaving huge craters in the sand.

I remember 9-11 here- and the horror of what happened, and I remember Israeli leadership on our TV authoritatively telling America what to think, exasperating racism and hate on every "side."

23 years later American puppets and pawns are busy legislating that protest against Israel is "antisemitism".  It isn't.

Protest and awareness are crucial tools against dangerous Zionist lies and racist cruelty.

Today's modern man made Israel is a dangerous entity with tentacles everywhere as it grows & grows & grows: The Israel Empire ignores borders, international law, human rights, and basic logic.

Please don't let America and all we have achieved be totally corrupted and destroyed:  Arabs and Muslims (and Jews and Christians) are human beings, just like us, and just like us they can be good and bad and everything in between. Don't let Israel drive a wedge between you and the truth.

Sincerely,

Anne Selden Annab

“Every lesson I’ve learned about the Holocaust compels me to stand up for Palestinians now,” said Brian Keisling, one of the leaders of Sunday’s protest, who is Jewish.

Biden’s lack of control over the current Gaza war risks putting him on the same level as Trump in the eyes of many activists, Keisling argued. Many see both candidates as complicit in genocide, and “if we’re arguing about who’s doing a worse one, we are too far gone,” Keisling said.
