A global initiative for humanitarian law: The Global IHL Initiative exists to restore respect for the rules of war and ensure that the Geneva Conventions remain a living lifeline for the vulnerable. In an age of rising conflict and fading restraint, we stand for the sanctity of life, for accountability and for a future where the laws of war are not forgotten relics but the foundation of our shared humanity.

Born from the ashes of World War II, the Geneva Conventions are a powerful promise that even in war, humanity must prevail. Created to put limits on the way wars are conducted and to protect those not taking part in the fighting – like civilians, prisoners and wounded soldiers – they have since been complemented with a series of treaties and customary law. This legal framework, known as international humanitarian law - or the laws of war - sets clear rules to follow amid the chaos of conflict.

There are now around 130 active armed conflicts worldwide.

They are not abstract legal concepts. They are the line between life and death, between dignity and despair, for millions caught in the crossfire. Yet despite a global consensus supporting the Geneva Conventions, adherence to even the most basic humanitarian norms remains shockingly insufficient in today’s war zones. Current conflicts reveal, in appalling and devastating ways, the immense challenges facing international humanitarian law in providing real and effective protection.

The suffering witnessed in war zones across the world is not inevitable. With strong political will, we can close the gap between the law and the reality on the ground.

How does international humanitarian law (IHL) protect in war?
Global IHL Initiative
  1. Civilians must be protected.

It is illegal to target civilians and civilian objects, such as homes, schools and hospitals. Civilians must also be protected against the effects of military operations.

  2. The sick and wounded must be cared for regardless of whose side they're on.

Wounded, sick and shipwrecked civilians, soldiers and fighters, as well as medical staff, are all protected under IHL.

  3. Detainees must be treated humanely and with dignity.

IHL protects those deprived of their liberty from ill treatment, acts of violence and intimidation.

  4. The dead must be treated with dignity.

Warrying parties must take all possible measures to search for, collect and evacuate the dead.

  5. Parties to a conflict must facilitate humanitarian access.

People must be able to receive humanitarian aid, like food, water and medicine.

  6. IHL places limits on the fighting

IHL treaties and customary law regulate weapon use and ban some, such as biological and chemical weapons, landmines, and cluster munitions.

  7. War crimes must be punished.

States have the responsibility to investigate, prosecute and punish serious violations of IHL.

Why this matters

To uphold and reaffirm the promise that, even in war, humanity must prevail.

The Global IHL Initiative exists to restore respect for the rules of war and ensure that the Geneva Conventions remain a living lifeline for the vulnerable. In an age of rising conflict and fading restraint, we stand for the sanctity of life, for accountability and for a future where the laws of war are not forgotten relics but the foundation of our shared humanity.

Despite the universal ratification of the Geneva Conventions, violations of fundamental humanitarian norms are widespread. Ongoing conflicts around the globe, whether in urban centres, rural villages or at sea, are causing devastating human suffering, destruction and displacement. Attacks on civilian infrastructure, hospitals and humanitarian workers are all too frequent. The human, social, economic and environmental costs of these violations are unsustainable.

[ISRAELI] Settlers and soldiers cut off water and electricity to [PALESTINIAN] homes, and block medical care in campaign of terror: “Every night, the [ISRAELI] settlers throw stones, use obscene language and shout during the night. We are living in a state of terror,” [PALESTINIAN] Hassan said. His mother, brother and sister, and three neighbours have also been blockaded inside, and their power and water have been cut off.

Israeli militants besiege two Palestinian families in their West Bank homes

Thu 13 Aug 2026

Israeli militants have besieged two Palestinian families in their homes since the weekend, aiming to take over their properties in the West Bank village of Qusra through a campaign of terror.

A group of settlers and soldiers set up a tent outside the home of Yousef Hassan’s family on Sunday afternoon, trapping him inside with his wife and two young daughters.

The Israeli men gathered just metres away from the spot where 28-year-old Amir Moatasem Odeh was killed by a settler in March. Another attacker stabbed his father. No one has been arrested over the murder and assault.

“Every night, the settlers throw stones, use obscene language and shout during the night. We are living in a state of terror,” Hassan said. His mother, brother and sister, and three neighbours have also been blockaded inside, and their power and water have been cut off.

Settlers used the same tactics to steal another Palestinian home in neighbouring Jalud village, driving the al Tubasi family out in July after a months-long siege.

They cut off water and electricity to the homes, although a solar panel allows Hassan to keep some devices charged in Qusra. They have also blocked medical care.

When his younger daughter, aged two, fell ill with vomiting and a high fever on Monday, settlers blocked an ambulance from reaching the house. The girls and their mother were eventually evacuated on Tuesday.

Hassan said those in the house were short on food and were drinking water and juice delivered by the ambulance that came to collect his daughter. “The situation is extremely dire.”... Israel deliberately starting wildfires in southern Lebanon, firefighters say: First responders, residents and environmental groups say [Israeli] military dropping flares to destroy forests and crops

Firefighters and residents of south Lebanon have accused the Israeli military of lighting wildfires in the region, as forested areas burned down in blazes sparked by Israeli bombing.

Environmental groups said the fires in recent weeks were part of a longstanding Israeli practice of targeting Lebanon’s natural environment.

On Tuesday, the Israeli military dropped flares in a wooded area outside Khiam, in south Lebanon, sparking blazes. When firefighters attempted to extinguish the flames, a drone struck close by, forcing them to withdraw, the head of the civil defence in the Nabatieh region, Hussein Fakih, said.

“Most of our missions are now related to fires. There are enormous areas of woodland that have burned, I don’t have the exact figures, but in the areas close to the [frontline], around 30-40% of the land has been affected by fires,” he said.

The Israeli military has caused fires across south Lebanon, in particular in olive groves and agricultural land, in the nearly two-months since the 17 June ceasefire that mostly ended fighting between Hezbollah and Israel, according to videos and testimony from first responders.

The military was asked for comment on each of the wildfire incidents, but did not respond.

“They started doing this right after the ceasefire, and there have been incendiary bombs every day,” said Fakih. “Small drones come out and drop incendiary materials, [white] phosphorus shells are fired at the woodlands, in addition to illumination flares that they drop during the daytime so the vegetation catches fire.”

Firefighters and residents of other areas in south Lebanon describe similar blazes being started by Israeli munitions and drones in dry scrub and woodlands. On Friday, Israeli munitions created large wildfires in two heavily forested areas: in Kfarchouba, close to the border, and between Jezzine and the western Bekaa valley.

The civil defence station chief in the area, Samir Hardan, said a fire was started near Kfarchouba on Friday afternoon after a drone dropped a munition in woodlands. After battling blazes overnight and extinguishing them on Saturday, a second drone started another fire on Sunday, Hardan said.

Firefighters, who are required to coordinate their movements with the Lebanese army, which relays their request to a “deconfliction” group that includes the Israeli military, were given permission to fight the fires at only two spots, and not other areas where fires were raging.

According to environmental groups, the fires are part of a pattern of Israeli attacks against Lebanon’s environment, which threaten the country’s woodlands and the biodiversity they support, experts said.

“These are long-established woodlands, dominated by productive stone pine alongside oak. They perform critical functions. The wider area is also an important passage and resting ground for migratory birds,” said Hisham Younes, the founder of the Lebanese conservation organisation Green Southerners.... Francesca Albanese says that what’s happening in West Bank is a continuation of Israel’s [1948] Nakba

“Despite a ceasefire nominally in force since October 2025, Israeli forces have killed about 160 Palestinians in Gaza in July alone, bringing the death toll in the ravaged enclave since the so-called ceasefire to more than 1,200. This includes women, children, older persons and others who had taken shelter in tents and areas to which they had been directed for their own safety,”

UN experts condemn escalation in attacks against Palestinians in Gaza and West Bank

10 August 2026

GENEVA – UN experts* today condemned the sharp escalation of attacks against Palestinian civilians across the occupied Palestinian territory in July, registering a sharp deterioration of an already catastrophic human rights situation.

“Despite a ceasefire nominally in force since October 2025, Israeli forces have killed about 160 Palestinians in Gaza in July alone, bringing the death toll in the ravaged enclave since the so-called ceasefire to more than 1,200. This includes women, children, older persons and others who had taken shelter in tents and areas to which they had been directed for their own safety,” the experts said. “Most killings occurred in densely populated displacement zones such as Al-Mawasi, far from the so-called yellow line. Nowhere in Gaza is safe.”

The experts reported with alarm that entire residential blocks receive evacuation orders just before fighter jets destroy them, deepening the already severe shelter crisis. “The continuous westward advancement of the so-called yellow line, the construction of a 23-kilometre barrier along it and the systematic detonation of residential buildings are re-engineering the geography of illegally occupied Gaza through force and displacement,” the experts said. They also condemned strikes on hospitals and shelters, the killing of police officers and UN-contracted staff, attacks on fishers, and abductions and abuses by armed groups reportedly collaborating with the Israeli military, as well as the killing of humanitarian workers, who through their work protecting and promoting fundamental human rights, are human rights defenders. “The genocide is continuing unabated,” the experts said.

They warned that food aid is still not entering Gaza freely, while products brought in through commercial channels are ultra-processed and neither nutritionally nor culturally adequate.

“With farmland and clean water inaccessible and agricultural inputs blocked, Palestinians are unable to feed themselves,” said the experts, adding that the burden is falling heaviest on children, older persons and those with disabilities. They also warned that food insecurity is fuelling a rise in gender-based violence and child marriage, as well as endangering women in their daily searches for food.

In the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, the experts deplored the killing of at least 14 Palestinians in July, most of them in the final 10 days, as well as deaths resulting from movement restrictions, among them the death of a four-month-old baby and a pregnant woman's miscarriage after ambulances were blocked at military gates. “When checkpoints and gates threaten the lives of infants, pregnant women and their unborn children, movement restrictions become lethal instruments,” they said.

The experts were particularly shocked by the surge in settler terror... READ MORE  https://waps.ohchr.org/en/press-releases/2026/08/un-experts-condemn-escalation-attacks-against-palestinians-gaza-and-west

BREAKING: Israeli military continues attacks and raids across the occupied West Bank, with arrests, home raids, and forced displacement reported in several areas.  LIVE updates: aje.news/s92crs

Escalation in settler attacks in occupied West Bank driven by upcoming Israeli elections

The recent escalation in settler attacks against Palestinians is state-sponsored and driven by the upcoming Israeli elections at the end of October, according to Ubai Al-Aboudi, a human rights advocate and former executive director of the Bisan Center for Research and Development.

“As a policy and a way to promote their policies or to promote themselves among the general electorate, the Israeli politicians that are now in charge of the government are giving more of a free hand and encouraging settlers even more to do these kinds of widespread attacks, pogroms, ethnic cleansing operations against Palestinians,” Al-Aboudi said.

Al-Aboudi noted that the surge in violence is also linked to a potential change in government in October.

“So, the settlers also understand that any new government might not be as lenient towards them, towards the ethnic cleansing process that they are taking right now on the ground,” he said, emphasising that the primary objective is to displace Palestinians from their land.

“The fact [is] that Israelis, through the government policy, through their genocidal policies, through their support of the settler militias … have been trying to push Palestinians out of our lands, to drive us away to make us refugees again,” Al-Aboudi added.  https://aje.news/suhi9z?update=4845765

Israeli illegal settlement enterprise aimed at denying Palestinians their rights

Israel’s illegal settlement enterprise in the occupied West Bank is aimed at preventing Palestinians from exercising their rights and ultimately preventing the establishment of a Palestinian state, political analyst Xavier Abu Eid has told Al Jazeera.

“The effect on Palestinians is exactly the same. It’s part of the same settler enterprise aimed at preventing Palestinians from enjoying their rights in their homeland,” Abu Eid said. He said the issue of Israeli settlers has been normalised locally and internationally, with attempts to distinguish between those living in illegal settlements for economic reasons and more ideologically driven settlers.

But Abu Eid said such distinctions obscure the broader system Israel has built around illegal settlements. “It’s not just about settlements and housing, but about the whole infrastructure,” he said.

As an example, Abu Eid said it is cheaper to travel by bus to an Israeli settlement than to a Palestinian village in the West Bank, highlighting how Israel prioritises illegal settlements and the infrastructure serving them.

He described this as part of a creeping takeover of Palestinian land, accompanied by restrictions on Palestinian movement and the seizure of more territory for Israeli settlers.   https://aje.news/suhi9z?update=4845425
