Tallying the global cost of the US-Israel war against Iran From thousands of lives lost to an economic shock likely to plunge millions into poverty, the world is paying dearly

It would be hard to find a human on Earth unaffected by the US-Israel war against Iran. Several thousand have been killed. Millions more pay are paying each day in steeper food prices or at the petrol pump, and as inflation eats away at the value of their earnings.

For many, the final bill has not yet come, but it will eventually. They will pay for the long-term damage caused by the biggest threat of all to the global economy: uncertainty.

Uncertainty is hard to measure, but one way is to look at geopolitical risk, which stalls investment and employment. The US Federal Reserve economists Dario Caldara and Matteo Iacoviello have created an index that tracks reports of global tension. It shows the Iran war has been more destabilising than the Covid-19 pandemic, but on a par with either the invasion of Ukraine in 2022 or that of Iraq in 2003.

So how does the world tally the cost of this war? Some costs are easier to calculate than others, such as bills for surface-to-air missiles that cost hundreds of thousands of dollars each. Others are harder to quantify, including the damage caused to Iranian and Lebanese hospitals and power networks. Much cannot be valued at all – the lives lost, including the 120 primary schoolchildren in Iran killed on the first day of the war.

Then there are hypothetical costs. A senior UN aid official framed the conflict in terms of opportunity cost, noting that the $2bn (£1.5bn) a day spent on military operations could otherwise cover lifesaving aid for roughly 87 million people.

And what about the beneficiaries of this war, the oil companies and the shareholders of arms manufacturers?

Here are some ways the impact of the war has been assessed:

Adam Patric Miller: Looking at the good, the bad and the ugly of last school year

"The bad: I work at a school where I witnessed and participated in the freedom of speech being quashed by a small group of vocal and powerful parents. I teach Elie Wiesel’s “Night,” Tim O’Brien’s “The Things They Carried” and George Orwell’s “1984” and guide students to connect literature to current events. Last year, it was Russian President Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine. This year, Israel and what continues to happen in Gaza. I asked: What qualifies as genocide? I said: Consider your tax dollars and your parents’ tax dollars and your teacher’s tax dollars that contribute to bombs falling from the sky on women and children and babies in Gaza. Not to think about that, I said, was bad."

July 19, 2024

This is the part of summer break when I check my blood pressure at the community center and find out it has dropped enough so the machine no longer recommends that I consult my doctor Immediately. I have space and time to reflect. This last school year has provided me with three things to consider: the good, the bad and the ugly.

The good: My students showed up to classes with energy; they worked to achieve, with some joy, what their teacher required of them; and, by year’s end, each demonstrated they can read and write better, whether the topic is a boating accident that almost killed a person or a graphic novel about a girl growing up during the time of the Islamic Revolution in Iran. One of my students, a boy with dark curly hair and an offbeat sense of humor, stopped by my office to say, “Hey, Mr. Miller. I just want you to know I’m sorry about what’s been happening.” That relates to the ugly but is still part of the good — he showed care for his teacher and thought about complicated events for himself.... Americans should not be helping racist Israel maim, wound and kill the children of Palestine.

2024 Student Protests
 Dear Biden...etc... ,

America has been unfairly siding with Jews-preferred Israel instead of standing up for the rule of fair and just laws- real security - and true democracy.

Israel aggressively persecutes and impoverishes the native non-Jewish people of historic Palestine over and over and over, for almost a century now, pushing Palestinian individuals and families into forced displacement and crowded refugee camps.

Meanwhile, here in America we frown on prayer in our public schools, while at the same time our taxes, as well as charity donations, generously fund Israel's religious "scholars" and schemes...  American politicians should not be legislating Israel's official taxpayer funded religion, nor should our elected officials be helping racist Israel maim, wound and kill the children of Palestine.

Holocaust Remembrance & "Never Again" need to be for everyone's sake- a fully inclusive plea, and a historically accurate call to remember all who suffered and died in the Nazi Holocaust including blacks, gays, disabled people, Poles, Roma "Gypsies", and political prisoners, to name a few.

Furthermore "Never Again" has to be about firmly condemning ongoing crimes against humanity today, not just yesterday.

Israel's monstrous Apartheid Wall needs to fall.

Sincerely,

Anne Selden Annab

Arresting students and banning Tiktok will not stifle the truth about Israeli crimes against humanity.

FYI the Israel/Palestine conflict did not start on Oct 7th 2023. To be fair and honest you must go back to 1917 when the British Empire and Occupation promoted the Balfour Declaration to create a "national home for the Jewish people" in Palestine.  At the time Palestine was part of the Ottoman Empire and there was a small Arab Jewish population living there, living in peace along with Muslims and Christians.

Fast forward to 1948 when following the horrors of the Nazi Holocaust, modern man made Israel was created. Israel was not created peacefully or by consensus with the Arab residents who had lived there for eons.  Israel was created by invading Zionist terrorists who murdered many indigenous Arabs- fragmenting families, and pushing millions of Palestinians into forced exile.

Israel has failed to provide evidence of Unrwa staff terrorist links: report

Israel has dropped almost 75,000 bombs and shells on Gaza in 200 days, twenty times more than the US aimed at Iraq in six years of war. It’s not war. It’s genocide.

There are enough weapons of war and destruction already on planet earth.

Where, after all, do universal human rights begin?

The UN Mediator for Palestine, Count Folke Bernadotte, believed that the Palestinians displaced had a right to return to their homes and wrote several UN reports to that effect.

"It would be an offence against the principles of elemental justice if these innocent victims of the conflict were denied the right to return to their homes while Jewish immigrants flow into Palestine, and, indeed, at least offer the threat of permanent replacement of the Arab refugees who have been rooted in the land for centuries."

Bernadotte was assassinated on Friday 17 September 1948 by members of the group Lehi, a Zionist terrorist organization, commonly known in the West as the Stern Gang

Happy Hanukkah Governor Shapiro- May the Festival of Lights bring you hope- and more clarity

Menorah

Happy Hanukkah

Dear Pennsylvania Governor Shapiro,

May the Festival of Lights bring you hope- and more clarity:  Antisemitism is evil & wrong AND there is a huge danger right here now in America with political leaders foolishly claiming that criticizing Israel or Zionism is antisemitism.

Since early autumn this year U of Penn Pres. Liz Magill has been slammed & harassed for allowing a Palestinian Literature Festival on the U of Penn Campus. That was more than a month before HAMAS's despicable attack on the music festival.

American tax payers are being forced to fund, arm, & empower Israel as Israel persecutes & bombs Palestinian men, women and children- and the Jewish hostages.

Our college students have a right to research and object to injustice and flagrant violations of international law and basic human rights.

Far too many of our elected officials and news anchors misuse their podiums & fame to persuade America to look away while Israel displaces, impoverishes, harasses, & kills the native non-Jewish people of the Holy Land.

Sincerely,

Anne Selden Annab

Statement from APWU [American Postal Workers Union] General Officers on the Conflict in Israel and Palestine

November 8, 2023

The American Postal Workers Union is shocked and saddened by the tragic and ongoing violence in Israel and Palestine. As working people, we stand with the oppressed and the innocent, thousands of whom have lost their lives in the last month.

As a union that stands for equality, social justice, human and labor rights, and international solidarity, we unite with unions and people of goodwill around the world in calls for justice and peace.

We unreservedly condemn the Hamas violence of October 7, which killed over 1,000 Israeli civilians and saw the kidnapping of more than 200 people.

However, Israel’s response has made the prospects for peace more remote. Over 10,000 innocent civilians, including 4000 children, have been killed by the relentless and indiscriminate bombing campaign on Gaza. Israel has shut off the flow of food, water, fuel and medical supplies to the Gaza Strip, a war crime. A humanitarian catastrophe is unfolding every day in Gaza. Thousands more innocent civilians stand to die wholly preventable deaths.

We call on our government, which is the primary foreign benefactor of the Israeli government, to use all its power to protect innocent lives and to help bring about peace in the region, and not use our tax dollars for more war.

We join the calls for an immediate ceasefire, the release of hostages, and urgently needed massive humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza. The cries of humanity demand nothing less.

APWU General Officers: President, Mark Dimondstein; Executive Vice President, Debby Szeredy; Secretary-Treasurer, Elizabeth 'Liz' Powell.
