East Jerusalem: Israel Escalating Home Demolitions, Evictions Discriminatory Laws Drive Forced Displacement in Silwan

(Beirut) – Israeli authorities are accelerating home demolitions and forced evictions of Palestinian residents in the Silwan district of occupied East Jerusalem, Human Rights Watch said today. The forcible deportation or transfer of the population of an occupied territory within or outside the territory, unless justified on a temporary basis for the protection of the population itself or imperative military reasons, is a violation of international humanitarian law and amounts to a war crime.

Silwan lies south of Jerusalem’s Old City. Among its 12 neighborhoods, al-Bustan and Batn al-Hawa have for decades been the primary focus of eviction and demolition campaigns led by Israeli authorities and settler organizations such as Ateret Cohanim. These campaigns intensified under cover of the hostilities in Gaza and, this year, Iran. Of the 587 Palestinians displaced by demolitions since October 7, 2023, a quarter were displaced during Israel’s war with Iran in March-April 2026, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination and Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). Over 2,000 people are at risk of forced displacement in Silwan, which, if not halted, will be one of the largest waves of expulsions in East Jerusalem since 1967, according to Ir Amim, an Israeli group that tracks government policies in Jerusalem.

“Israeli authorities are intensifying their longstanding illegal policy of emptying areas surrounding Jerusalem’s Old City of Palestinians and replacing them with Israeli settlers,” said Sarah Sanbar, acting Israel and Palestine researcher at Human Rights Watch. “Israeli efforts to change the demography of Jerusalem are war crimes, enabled by the impunity granted by Israel’s close allies.”

Human Rights Watch researchers visited Silwan in April 2026 and interviewed three residents issued eviction and/or demolition orders and two lawyers representing clients in Silwan, and reviewed relevant legal documents. Human Rights Watch attempted to reach Ateret Cohanim by phone but has not received a response.

The surge in displacement in Batn al-Hawa results from a series of eviction lawsuits filed by Ateret Cohanim, based on discriminatory laws allowing Jewish individuals to reclaim East Jerusalem property lost in the 1948 war, while barring Palestinians from recovering property also lost in 1948. In al-Bustan, the entire neighborhood of 115 homes housing 1,500 people is under threat of demolition due to the municipality’s plan to establish an archaeological park.

Zuheir al-Rajabi, director of Batn al-Hawa’s community center, said that Ateret Cohanim first initiated eviction proceedings in 2015. “At the beginning, we said, ‘What can they do? This is our land and house, we have nothing to fear,’” he told Human Rights Watch.

For a decade, he fought the eviction in Israeli courts: “But after October 7, everything became possible. Judges began issuing eviction orders without giving a chance to defend or hear from the victims. It used to take three to five years to go through all the courts and appeals. After October 7, the whole process only takes 45 days.”

A local lawyer said that “Sometimes, the decision takes one working day.”

Since October 7, Ateret Cohanim lawsuits have resulted in the eviction of 30 families, a total of 139 people, with enforcement proceedings underway for hundreds more, according to Peace Now, an Israeli group. In the 8 previous years, only 36 people were evicted.

Zuheir said that Israeli settlers have moved into the homes of his former neighbors: “Now we feel like we are at the end of the road. [...] For the last 50 years, we all lived together in Silwan, my brothers and I, and our children growing up with each other. We fought hard to stay together, and finally after 50 years, they succeeded in splitting us apart.”

In April 2024, Harbi al-Rajabi and his son, Nidal, received an eviction order for their building in Batn al-Hawa, where five families lived... READ MORE  https://www.hrw.org/news/2026/06/17/east-jerusalem-israel-escalating-home-demolitions-evictions

‘They just see you as an Arab’: Israel’s Palestinian citizens given cursory protection from attack. Deaths of four family members sheltering in supposed ‘safe rooms’ in Tamra highlight racial inequality of Israel’s defence of its citizens

...  The war between Israel and Iran involves powerful modern weapons that can turn a human body into vapour and scraps in an instant. Israel also has modern air defences which have managed thus far to intercept most of the incoming Iranian missiles. And for three-quarters of the country there are underground bunkers, a virtual guarantee of survival.

But the Khatib family did not have a bunker. They were Palestinian citizens of Israel, like the rest of the 37,000 population of this old hillside town in the Lower Galilee. And in common with most Palestinian-majority towns, Tamra does not have a single underground shelter. Like much else in Israel, there is nothing equal about the way death comes from the sky.

“The Israeli government, since the creation of the state, didn’t invest in one public shelter for the Arab part of society,” Tamra’s mayor, Mussa Abu Rumi, said. The reinforced “safe rooms” in new-build houses are an inferior alternative, as the fate of the Khatibs showed, and Abu Rumi said only 40% of Tamra residents even have those... Israel’s war on Palestinian political life in Jerusalem- by Daoud Kuttab: If Israel truly seeks peace and coexistence, it must begin by recognizing the rights of Palestinians to exist, organize and thrive. That includes respect for international law, the protection of educational and religious institutions, and allowing Palestinians the freedom to engage in normal political and civil life. The international community, in particular Israel’s allies, must also take note: Silence in the face of these violations is complicity. As Israel continues to claim the mantle of democracy, its actions in East Jerusalem tell another story, one of exclusion, repression and systematic erasure.

"Israeli authorities are redrawing the city not only physically, but socially and spiritually."

2025: Israeli undercover forces raid East Jerusalem's Educational Bookshop—an intellectual lighthouse and family-run gem resisting Palestinian erasure under apartheid: Israel is now detaining booksellers for the crime of... selling books.

Shocked by Israeli forces' raid on East Jerusalem's Educational Bookshop—an intellectual lighthouse and family-run gem resisting Palestinian erasure under apartheid. Internationals in Jerusalem: please show up, stand with the Muna family, and protect this vital hub. Don't leave them alone!

Here are some of the books that were taken during the search
Feb. 9 2025 Israeli undercover agents have kidnapped Mahmoud and Ahmad Muna, owners of the renowned “Educational Bookshop” in East Jerusalem, a cultural landmark for over 40 years. The shop was ransacked, and books were seized during the raid. The brother of the owners told Haaretz: "They went through the books with Google Translate and took away anything they didn't like.” ... “They took every book with the Palestinian flag on it”

The Police presented as evidence this "coloring book of incitement"

Israel is now detaining booksellers for the crime of ... selling books.

The Educational Bookshop is not just another bookstore. Every diplomat, journalist, or researcher of Jerusalem and the conflict knows these stores and their owner, Mahmoud Muna

"We condemn in the strongest terms the arrest of my friends Mahmoud Muna and Ahmad Muna, Palestinian booksellers and owners of Jerusalem’s Educational Bookshop, by Israel’s occupation authorities.

The arrests of Mahmoud and Ahmad is a stark reminder of the ongoing campaign to censor knowledge, stifle free speech and information that challenges Israel’s occupation of Palestine and in this case, Israel’s illegal colonial occupation of #Jerusalem and its oppressive measures in the city. Freedom of expression is a cornerstone of all just societies. There is no genuine peace without the freedom to read, and no freedom to read without booksellers able to carry out their work in safety.

We stand firm in our support of Mahmoud and Ahmad Muna, and all Palestinian detainees, and call on our colleagues and partners in the international community, including the publishing industry and the book trade, in the U.K. and beyond, to join us in calling for their immediate release."

Mahmoud Muna and his nephew Ahmad are currently in court, arrested by Israelis for being booksellers. This is Mahmoud last autumn @StanfordsTravel signing copies of Daybreak in Gaza with his co-editors. Everyone in publishing should be screaming about this!

No Other Land’ is a shocking look at Palestinian life under occupation - a documentary about the systemic demolition of Palestinian homes in the West Bank

 Movie Review
The irony shouldn’t be lost on anyone that “No Other Land,” a documentary about the systemic demolition of Palestinian homes in the West Bank, cannot find a cinematic home, either with a distributor or a major U.S. streamer.

Producers have opted to self-distribute this powerful, pointed look at Israel’s policies in seized land despite the movie earning an Oscar nomination and wins at the Berlin International Film Festival, Gotham Awards and Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards. “No Other Land” is, in its nature, a piece of advocacy. There are no both-sidesing explored here. The filmmakers — a Palestinian-Israeli collective of four directors — make it clear they hope documenting their plight will get the United States to pressure Israel to stop the destruction.

The documentary is largely told from the perspective of Basel Adra, an activist born in Masafer Yatta, a collection of villages in the southern mountains of the occupied West Bank. The Israelis have ordered Palestinians off the land to make room for a military training ground.

Shot between 2019 and 2023 — filming ended before the Israel-Hamas war exploded — the bulldozers arrive and never stop, protected by soldiers and ripping through simple concrete homes. The residents retreat to caves, albeit with high-def TV connections. Then they try to rebuild, often under the stealth of night. Then the bulldozers return.

“They destroy us slowly. Every week, a home,” goes the narration. “Every week a new family must decide: Endure, or leave their land.”

Adra and Palestinian co-writer and co-director Hamdan Ballal are joined by an Israeli journalist, Yuval Abraham, who arrives in Masafer Yatta with the cinematographer Rachel Szor. Abraham is asked point blank on his arrival: “What do you think about what your country is doing to us?” His answer: “I think it’s a crime.”

It is a wrenching movie to see: Soldiers, with vague permission from a court that Palestinians have no say in, push old women and children, not answering their pleas to stop and merely waving away residents whose families have lived in the region since the 1830s. The residents can’t vote and their license plates set them apart from Israelis. They’re hoping enough likes on social media can change their plight....
