The targeting of Palestinian children has become a fixed policy, including pursuit, night arrests, and forceful detention across various areas.  

 

Detained children face harsh interrogation practices, including isolation, threats, and deprivation of access to a lawyer or family members during the initial stages of questioning.  

 

Children inside prisons are subjected to abuse, beatings, medical neglect, and harsh detention conditions without consideration for their age.

On Palestinian Children’s Day, the Palestinian Center for Prisoners Advocacy documents the presence of approximately 350 Palestinian children in Israeli prisons, amid ongoing arrest campaigns that increasingly and directly target children across various Palestinian areas.

The targeting of children and the continued arrests are no longer linked to exceptional circumstances; rather, they have become part of a clear on-the-ground policy by Israeli forces. This includes pursuit, night arrests, live fire, and field detention, leading to their transfer to interrogation centers, within a context that affects an age group that is supposed to be protected under international law.

The arrest of these children is carried out through violent raids, accompanied by physical assault and intimidation, before they are subjected to interrogation. During this process, they are exposed to harsh pressure methods, including prolonged interrogation, isolation, threats, and deprivation of the presence of a lawyer or a family member during the initial stages of questioning.

Children in prisons are also subjected to abuse and ill-treatment, including beatings, medical neglect, and detention in conditions unsuitable for their age, in an environment lacking basic needs specific to children.

Over previous years, cases have also been documented in which child prisoners were subjected to moral and security coercion during interrogation, through blackmail and psychological pressure, aimed at extracting confessions or coercing them into cooperating with Israeli security services.

These practices constitute a clear violation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989), which stipulates the protection of children from arbitrary arrest and guarantees their treatment in a manner consistent with their age and dignity, while prohibiting torture or cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment.

They also contradict Article 37 of the Convention, which states that the detention of children should be used only as a last resort and for the shortest possible time, as well as Article 40, which guarantees a child’s right to a fair trial and juvenile justice standards.

In addition, these violations contravene the provisions of the Geneva Conventions, which require special protection for children in conflict zones.

What is happening to child prisoners comes within an ongoing policy targeting children through arrest and treatment inside prisons, which necessitates urgent and genuine international action to secure their release and to stop the policies and violations carried out by the Israeli occupation against them.

‘Israel has made clear it wants to commit genocide’ ‘Israel has made clear it wants to commit genocide’: Ex-UNRWA official Chris Gunness, a former spokesperson for the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), says the Israeli government is not allowing critical aid into Gaza because it wants to continue its genocidal policies against Palestinians. “There is a litany of – quite frankly – fascistic pretexts” for Israel to maintain its restrictions on humanitarian assistance, Gunness told Al Jazeera. “Let’s be clear on the big picture: Israel has made it clear that it wants to commit a genocide against the Palestinians, it wants to ethnically-cleanse them, and it wants to starve them,” he said, noting that there are millions of aid items waiting to be brought into the enclave. “The big picture is that the reason these items are not being let in … is that there is a genocide going on, there is a collective punishment, there is ethnic cleansing, and there’s a policy of starvation.”

UN reiterates call to open all Gaza crossings for aid

A spokesperson for UN chief Antonio Guterres has reiterated that more crossings must be opened to allow unimpeded humanitarian assistance to reach Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

Speaking to reporters at UN headquarters in New York, Farhan Haq noted that only two Gaza crossings are currently operating: al-Karara (also known as Kissufim) and Karem Abu Salem (Kerem Shalom).

“At this stage, our point is that now that the ceasefire has taken hold, we need to be able to use all of the crossing points,” Haq said.

He added that this includes crossings along the border with Egypt and into northern Gaza, which has been particularly hard-hit by Israel’s two-year bombardment. “We want all the others to be opened up as soon as possible,” Haq said.    https://aje.io/ns9p5r?update=4091942

Rights group says 168 Palestinian children detained in Israel without charge

Nearly half – 48 percent – of all Palestinian children known to be held in Israeli prisons have not been charged with a crime, a child rights organisation has said.

The most recently available data from the Israel Prison Service showed 350 Palestinian children were detained in Israeli prisons as of September 30, Defense for Children International-Palestine (DCI-Palestine) reported.

Of those, 168 children had no recorded charge or trial under way – the highest proportion since DCI-Palestine started monitoring detention data in 2008, the group said.

The “arbitrary” detentions violate the Convention on the Rights of the Child, which Israel has ratified, DCI-Palestine said, adding that Israel’s prison system is “designed to physically remove, suppress and stifle” children.

Israel passes law allowing Palestinian children under 14 to be jailed: More than 270 Palestinian minors are currently held in Israeli detention, despite UN resolutions and international treaties prohibiting the imprisonment of children, according to Palestinian right groups.

 The Israeli Knesset passed a law yesterday authorising the detention of Palestinian minors under the age of 14, Anadolu reported.

The bill was approved in the second and third readings by 55 votes to 33, the Knesset said in a statement.

The legislation, a temporary five-year measure, allows courts to order the detention of children under 14 in closed facilities if convicted of murder involving “terrorism or terrorist activities.”

Upon reaching 14, the child would continue to serve their sentence in prison, according to the statement.

The measure could be extended by up to two years upon approval from the justice and welfare ministers and the Knesset’s Constitution Committee.

The law also includes a three-year provision allowing courts to jail minors in prison instead of juvenile facilities for up to ten days if they are deemed dangerous or pose a threat to others. Courts may also extend this period if circumstances warrant, the Knesset said.

More than 270 Palestinian minors are currently held in Israeli detention, despite UN resolutions and international treaties prohibiting the imprisonment of children, according to Palestinian right groups.

The Knesset also passed a controversial law that allows the deportation of family members of Palestinians involved in attacks against Israelis.
