During
1947 and 1948, Israel systematically demolished 531 Palestinian
villages inside the area that became Israel. More than 200 of these
villages were destroyed, and between 250,000 and 350,000 people were
displaced before May 1948 when the first Arab-Israeli war officially began.

1948 UN Resolution 194: The United Nations General Assembly adopts resolution 194 (III),
resolving that “refugees wishing to return to their homes and live at
peace with their neighbours should be permitted to do so at the earliest
practicable date, and that compensation should be paid for the property
of those choosing not to return and for loss of or damage to property
which, under principles of international law or equity, should be made
good by the Governments or authorities responsible.” ....
