No Tech for Apartheid campaign ... Google fires 28 employees for protesting Israel cloud deal

STATEMENT from Google workers with the No Tech for Apartheid campaign on Google’s mass, retaliatory firings of workers  https://medium.com/@notechforapartheid/statement-from-google-workers-with-the-no-tech-for-apartheid-campaign-on-googles-indiscriminate-28ba4c9b7ce8

CNN News : Google fires 28 employees for protesting Israel cloud deal

London CNN  —

Google has fired more than two dozen employees who protested this week against the company’s cloud computing contract with the Israeli government.

The workers were dismissed after an investigation found that they had staged protests inside Google’s offices in New York and Sunnyvale, California. In Sunnyvale, they entered the office of Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian, according to a post on X by the group that organized the demonstration, No Tech For Apartheid.

Protesters held banners that read “No More Genocide For Profit” and “We Stand with Palestinian, Arab and Muslim Googlers.”

A Google spokesperson told CNN Thursday that the protests “were part of a long-standing campaign by a group of organizations and people who largely don’t work” at the company.

“A small number of employee protesters entered and disrupted a few of our locations. Physically impeding other employees’ work and preventing them from accessing our facilities is a clear violation of our policies, and completely unacceptable behavior. After refusing multiple requests to leave the premises, law enforcement was engaged to remove them to ensure office safety,” the spokesperson added.

“We have so far concluded individual investigations that resulted in the termination of employment for 28 employees, and will continue to investigate and take action as needed.”

Time: Google Fires 28 Workers Involved in Protests Over $1.2 Billion Israeli Contract

Alphabet Inc.’s Google has fired 28 employees after they were involved in protests against Project Nimbus, a $1.2 billion joint contract with Amazon.com Inc. to provide the Israeli government with AI and cloud services.

The protests, which were led by the No Tech for Apartheid organization, took place Tuesday across Google offices in New York City, Seattle, and Sunnyvale, California. Protesters in New York and California staged a nearly 10-hour sit-in, with others documenting the action, including through a Twitch livestream. Nine of them were arrested Tuesday evening on trespassing charges.

Several workers involved in the protests, including those who were not directly engaged in the sit-in, received a message from the company’s Employee Relations group informing them that they had been put on leave. Google told the affected employees that it’s “keeping this matter as confidential as possible, only disclosing information on a need to know basis” in an email seen by Bloomberg. On Wednesday evening, the workers were informed they were being dismissed by the company, according to a statement from Google staff with the No Tech for Apartheid campaign.

“Physically impeding other employees’ work and preventing them from accessing our facilities is a clear violation of our policies, and completely unacceptable behavior,” Google said in a statement about the protesters.... READ MORE

Time Magazine's The 100 Most Influential People of 2024: Palestinian Photo-Journalist Motaz Azaiza "We need to stop this war.”

Palestinian Photo-Journalist Motaz Azaiza
The 100 Most Influential People of 2024

By Yasmeen Serhan

For 108 days, Motaz Azaiza acted as the world’s eyes and ears in his native Gaza. Armed with a camera and a flak jacket marked “PRESS,” the 25-year-old Palestinian photographer spent nearly four months documenting life under Israeli bombardment: families displaced from homes, women mourning loved ones, a man trapped beneath the rubble. His images offered a glimpse into Gaza that few in the international press—which has been all but barred from accessing the Strip—could rival. He did so at great risk: At least 95 journalists have been killed in Gaza since Oct. 7, in what has been the deadliest period for the press since the Committee to Protect Journalists began tracking fatalities in 1992. Dozens more have been injured or arrested. Since evacuating Gaza in January, Azaiza’s role has shifted to raising awareness of the crisis—and to calling for international intervention. “What is happening in Gaza is not content for you,” he said. “We are not telling you what is happening ... for your likes or views or shares. No, we are waiting for you to act. We need to stop this war.”

Stop wasting America's time and resources playing word games for racist Israel

377-44-1: House passed a resolution that the "slogan, 'from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free' is antisemitic and its use must be condemned." clerk.house.gov/evs/2024/roll1

Dear Biden, Harris...etc... my elected leaders,

The House formally condemns words- specifically the pro-Palestine pro-Democracy phrase "From the River to the Sea", while foolishly ignoring the horrific violence of the sovereign nation state that fully controls all the airspace and borders between the actual river and sea!!!

Decade after decade for 75 years now & counting, Israel as "The Jewish State" has been intentionally impoverishing, denigrating, displacing and/or killing countless Palestinian men, women and children between the river and the sea.

Israel as "The Jewish State" is a man made entity and tourist trap that American preachers & politicians idolize and arm with taxpayers' money plus American made military weaponry: American $$$ SHOULD NOT be used to fund and arm a very foreign country's preferred religion, bigotry, injustice, brainwashing and brutality.

Our charity should be healthy food for the hungry- NOT WEAPONRY & WORD GAMES for Israeli war mongers!

Israel claims self defense as "The Jewish State" in order to destroy more Arab homes and neighborhoods because Israel wants the land but not the indigenous non-Jewish people of that land.  Who is the terrorist?!  And why are you not using your position and public podium to condemn Israel's apartheid practices & its extensive state sponsored terrorism.

Why are you not clearly advocating full and equal rights for all people, regardless of supposed race or religion!  Maybe it is in part because the "All the News that's fit to print" NYTimes has a word list its journalists have been told to avoid using when writing about the Israel/Palestine conflict: Refugee Camps. Occupied Territory. Slaughter. Massacre. Carnage. Genocide. Ethnic Cleansing.

Stop wasting America's time and resources playing word games for racist Israel!!!

Please start using your own position and power to advocate American ideals and good investments such as secular democracy with freedom of and from religion for all people, including Israelis and Palestinians.

Sincerely,

Anne Selden Annab

Where, after all, do universal human rights begin?

The UN Mediator for Palestine, Count Folke Bernadotte, believed that the Palestinians displaced had a right to return to their homes and wrote several UN reports to that effect.

"It would be an offence against the principles of elemental justice if these innocent victims of the conflict were denied the right to return to their homes while Jewish immigrants flow into Palestine, and, indeed, at least offer the threat of permanent replacement of the Arab refugees who have been rooted in the land for centuries."

Bernadotte was assassinated on Friday 17 September 1948 by members of the group Lehi, a Zionist terrorist organization, commonly known in the West as the Stern Gang

The Intercept: Leaked NYT Gaza Memo Tells Journalists to Avoid Words “Genocide,” “Ethnic Cleansing,” and “Occupied Territory”

Amid the internal battle over the New York Times’s coverage of Israel’s war, top editors handed down a set of directives.

The New York Times instructed journalists covering Israel’s war on the Gaza Strip to restrict the use of the terms “genocide” and “ethnic cleansing” and to “avoid” using the phrase “occupied territory” when describing Palestinian land, according to a copy of an internal memo obtained by The Intercept.

The memo also instructs reporters not to use the word Palestine “except in very rare cases” and to steer clear of the term “refugee camps” to describe areas of Gaza historically settled by displaced Palestinians expelled from other parts of Palestine during previous Israeli–Arab wars. The areas are recognized by the United Nations as refugee camps and house hundreds of thousands of registered refugees... Coverage of Gaza War in the New York Times and Other Major Newspapers Heavily Favored Israel, Analysis Shows

The analysis found that, as of November 24, the New York Times had described Israeli deaths as a “massacre” on 53 occasions and those of Palestinians just once. The ratio for the use of “slaughter” was 22 to 1, even as the documented number of Palestinians killed climbed to around 15,000.

The latest Palestinian death toll estimate stands at more than 33,000, including at least 15,000 children — likely undercounts due to Gaza’s collapsed health infrastructure and missing persons, many of whom are believed to have died in the rubble left by Israel’s attacks over the past six months... The Israeli army is broadcasting recordings of women screaming and babies crying to lure Palestinians out into the streets in Gaza and kill them, a rights monitor has reported.

Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor, a Geneva-based group, said the technique was being used to intimidate and target Palestinian civilians in the central Gaza Strip's Nuseirat refugee camp, which is currently under assault by Israel.

Testimonies from residents who spoke to the team confirmed hearing sounds of crying and screams broadcast late at night on Sunday and Monday.

When the residents went out to investigate and try to help they were targeted by Israeli quadcopter drones and gunfire, the report said.

The alarming technique was used with the intent of luring the camp’s residents out into the streets, where they could be more easily targeted by Israeli snipers, Euro-Med said.

Maha Hussaini, the strategy director for Euro-Med in Gaza, told The New Arab that some of the sounds are often broadcast late at night when the streets are empty.

"This technique and noise is primarily used to bring people out to target them, because at night no one is out, especially following the random attacks and bombings on the Nuseirat Camp," she said.

"The Israeli forces find no one to target, so has resorted to this trick to deceive people... READ MORE     https://www.newarab.com/news/israel-broadcasts-baby-sounds-lure-palestinians-gaza

For Black women, the liminal space in which Black History Month becomes Women’s History Month feels like the time to reflect on our progress — and how far we have to go.

The Biden administration has deployed Black women as both velvet gloves and iron fists in respect to Israel’s latest assault on Gaza, in which more than 30,000 Palestinians have been killed, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. They are both enforcing U.S. complicity in this atrocity and attempting to soften its appearance.

‘Chronic traumatic stress disorder’: the Palestinian psychiatrist challenging western definitions of trauma

Chair of the Palestinian ministry of health’s mental health unit says the clinical definition of PTSD does not fit the reality in Gaza

Even before the war in Gaza broke out, people in the besieged Palestinian territory had some of the world’s worst rates of mental illness.

Israel and Egypt’s blockade of the Mediterranean strip is now 17 years old; a generation has grown up knowing nothing but cyclical escalation, a dire lack of public services and next to no freedom of movement. Research published by Save the Children in 2022 found that four out of five children in Gaza said they live with depression, grief and fear, and three in five were self harming.

Since 7 October, the charity found that there has – unsurprisingly – been a dramatic deterioration in children’s mental health. “Children here have seen everything,” one father, Wasseem, told Save the Children researchers. “They’ve seen the bombs, the deaths, the bodies … We can’t pretend to them any more. Now, my son can even tell what types of explosives are falling.”... READ MORE   https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/apr/14/mental-health-palestine-children

2024 USC canceled Asna Tabassum's valedictorian speech after receiving a wave of hate online for supporting Palestine.... please read her statement in full

Asna Tabassum: "Although this should have been a time of celebration for my family, friends, professors, and classmates, anti-Muslim and anti-Palestinian voices have subjected me to a campaign of racist hatred because of my uncompromising belief in human rights for all,"

Statement by University of Southern California Student Asna Tabassum, Class of 2024 Valedictorian:

I am honored to have been selected as USC Class of 2024 Valedictorian. Although this should have been a time of celebration for my family, friends, professors, and classmates, anti-Muslim and anti-Palestinian voices have subjected me to a campaign of racist hatred because of my uncompromising belief in human rights for all.

This campaign to prevent me from addressing my peers at commencement has evidently accomplished its goal: today, USC administrators informed me that the university will no longer allow me to speak at commencement due to supposed security concerns. I am both shocked by this decision and profoundly disappointed that the University is succumbing to a campaign of hate meant to silence my voice.

I am not surprised by those who attempt to propagate hatred. I am surprised that my own university—my home for four years—has abandoned me.

In a meeting with the USC Provost and the Associate Senior Vice President of Safety and Risk Assurance on April 14, I asked about the alleged safety concerns and was told that the University had the resources to take appropriate safety measures for my valedictory speech, but that they would not be doing so since increased security protections is not what the University wants to “present as an image.”

Because I am not aware of any specific threats against me or the university, because my request for the details underlying the university’s threat assessment has been denied, and because I am not being provided any increased safety to be able to speak at commencement, there remain serious doubts about whether USC’s decision to revoke my invitation to speak is made solely on the basis of safety.

Instead of allowing the campaign of hatred to define who I am and what I stand for, let me therefore take this opportunity to tell you about myself.

I am a first-generation South Asian-American Muslim whose passion for service stems from the experience of my grandparents, who were unable to access lifesaving medical technology because they had been displaced by communal violence.

I am a biomedical engineer who learned the meaning of health equity through developing low- cost and accessible jaundice for babies whose darker skin color conceals the visual yellowing of their complexion.

I am a proud Trojan who loves my campus that has enabled me to go from building a walker to shipping medical gowns to Ukraine to writing about the Rwandan Genocide to taking blood pressure measurements for our neighbors in Skid Row.

I am a student of history who chose to minor in resistance to genocide, anchored by the Shoah Foundation, and have learned that ordinary people are capable of unspeakable acts of violence when they are taught hate fueled by fear. And due to widespread fear, I was hoping to use my commencement speech to inspire my classmates with a message of hope. By canceling my speech, USC is only caving to fear and rewarding hatred.

My identities and experiences inspired me to think outside the box—a mindset I cultivated at USC, and it is this very quality that contributed to my selection as USC Valedictorian.

As your class Valedictorian, I implore my USC classmates to think outside the box—to work towards a world where cries for equality and human dignity are not manipulated to be expressions of hatred.

I challenge us to respond to ideological discomfort with dialogue and learning, not bigotry and censorship. And I urge us to see past our deepest fears and recognize the need to support justice for all people, including the Palestinian people.

Tabassum, who is South Asian-American and Muslim, said in a statement that as a result of the backlash, she has faced "a campaign of racist hatred because of my uncompromising belief in human rights for all."  NPR NEWS  https://www.npr.org/2024/04/16/1244990599/usc-valedictorian-speech-canceled

USC canceled Asna Tabassum's valedictorian speech after she received a wave of hate online for supporting Palestine.

On Tuesday, April 6, the University of Southern California (USC) Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism announced on social media that USC student Asna Tabassum was selected as valedictorian for the class of 2024. Shortly after the announcement, she began receiving harassment online from a social media account called 'We Are Tov,' which reportedly launched a dishonest and defamatory attack against Asna and created a petition calling on USC to remove her from the position of valedictorian.

USC released a statement on Monday, April 15, stating that while Asna would retain the title of valedictorian, she would not be allowed to speak during the commencement ceremony due to the hate campaign against her "to maintain the safety of our campus and students."

For what may be the first time in USC history, the school's commencement ceremony will not include a speech from its valedictorian. This decision to cancel Asna's speech empowers voices of hate, violates USC's obligation to protect its students, and sends a terrible message to not only Muslim students at USC but all students who dare to express support for Palestinian humanity. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) is a milestone document in the history of human rights. Drafted by representatives with different legal and cultural backgrounds from all regions of the world, the Declaration was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in Paris on 10 December 1948 (General Assembly resolution 217 A) as a common standard of achievements for all peoples and all nations. It sets out, for the first time, fundamental human rights to be universally protected and it has been translated into over 500 languages. The UDHR is widely recognized as having inspired, and paved the way for, the adoption of more than seventy human rights treaties, applied today on a permanent basis at global and regional levels (all containing references to it in their preambles).

April 14, 2024

Alexandria Poet Laureate Zeina Azzam first found it difficult to write about Palestine amid the ongoing conflict that started last October.

Now, her words about the children of Gaza have been translated into five languages and recited everywhere, from senators’ offices to churches, from vigils to protests.

Azzam says she was moved to pen the poem “Write My Name” after reading a CNN report about parents in Gaza who had resorted to writing their children’s names on their legs to help identify them should they or their children be killed.

More than 12,300 children in Gaza have been killed since the start of the Israel-Hamas war on Oct. 7, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. The UN agency for Palestinian refugees said that more children have been killed in Gaza in the last four months than children killed in the last four years of war globally...   READ MORE   https://patabook.com/news/2024/04/14/alexandrias-poet-laureate-whose-parents-fled-palestine-creates-potent-art-from-the-devastation-in-gaza/

Zeina Azzam's poem- Write My Name

Write my name on my leg, Mama
Use the black permanent marker
with the ink that doesn’t bleed
if it gets wet, the one that doesn’t melt
if it’s exposed to heat

Write my name on my leg, Mama
Make the lines thick and clear
Add your special flourishes
so I can take comfort in seeing
my mama’s handwriting when I go to sleep

Write my name on my leg, Mama
and on the legs of my sisters and brothers
This way we will belong together
This way we will be known
as your children

Write my name on my leg, Mama
and please write your name
and Baba’s name on your legs, too
so we will be remembered
as a family

Write my name on my leg, Mama
Don’t add any numbers
like when I was born or the address of our home
I don’t want the world to list me as a number
I have a name and I am not a number

Write my name on my leg, Mama
When the bomb hits our house
When the walls crush our skulls and bones
our legs will tell our story, how
there was nowhere for us to run

Please no more funds, weaponry, and support for war mongering Israel

Dear President Biden.. etc...

Anne Frank  & the Holocaust have been expropriated, abused & misused for decades to build anti-Arab, anti-Muslim, Anti-Palestine, anti-Iran armies of hate here in America.

Israel bombing Iran's embassy in Syria was wrong & should have been firmly condemned with ironclad disgust, not greeted with ironclad support for Israel.

Your support for Israel as "Jewish" shows people worldwide that arming religion with lethal weaponry is the best way to gain power: Please stop fueling religious extremism & bigotry here, there and everywhere.

Israel is in long term & flagrant violation of international law on multiple counts.  Israel constantly seeks to control the narrative- the stories told in our newspapers and on our college campuses, to manipulate our elected leaders on all levels in order to gather up more money & weaponry for an endlessly cruel war on the native-non-Jewish people of the Middle East and beyond.

Many Israelis have multiple passports with citizenship & job opportunities in multiple sovereign nations. Helen Thomas, an amazing American hero to many, a trail blazer in journalism, was demonized in 2010 for daring to say that Jews should leave Israel to the Palestinians and return to "Europe, Russia and America".  Was she really that wrong?  Mileikowsky's family was from Russia, and he was a nobody in Philadelphia, but sure is a big fish in Israel as he bombs Gaza into ruin and rubble.

Israeli crusaders recently convinced our myopic Congress to stop funding UNWRA while terrorized Palestinian children starve to death in that Israeli-created concentration camp called Gaza.

I believe land grabbing Israel aims to destroy the United Nations- not just sabotaging respect for every refugee's inalienable right to return, but also totally crippling the rule of fair and just laws.

Universal basic human rights matter, and so does hope for a just and lasting peace based on the ruby red slippers of the Right to Return to original homes and lands.

Sincerely,

Anne Selden Annab

1963 Martin Luther King Jr's I Have A Dream speech about equity for all still rings true: "Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice. Now is the time to lift our nation from the quicksands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood. Now is the time to make justice a reality for all of God's children"      https://www.history.com/topics/black-history/i-have-a-dream-speech
