BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) -- The Palestinian Authority called on the UN Monday to act to end Israel's occupation of Palestinian land Monday, in a statement marking the world Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People.

The PA Ministry of Information in Ramallah declared in a statement that this day should be "translated into action by implementing resolutions adopted by the same General Assembly including the right of return of Palestinian refugees."

The statement called on the UN Security Council and General Assembly to bring to an end the "longest occupation in modern times" and translate its resolutions in that regard into actions.

The day coincides with the anniversary of the passage in 1947 by the UN General Assembly of Resolution 181, which called for the partition of mandatory Palestinian into one Jewish state and one Arab state.

The PA also said that 1947 UN partition plan "a dangerous turning point which led to our catastrophe and loss of our land and historic heritage."

"We are still paying a heavy toll day and night," for this decision, the statement added.

The General Assembly created the Day in Solidarity in 1977, recognizing what the PA said was "the need for the greatest possible dissemination of information on the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people" and on the efforts of the UN to promote the attainment of those rights.
