My letter to the NYTimes RE Pushing Peace on the Palestinians

Marking the ratification of the UN Charter on 24 October 1945

UNITED NATIONS 2013: The nations of the world call on Israel to comply with its obligations under international law, the 2004 advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice concerning the apartheid wall and all UN resolutions

RE: Pushing Peace on the Palestinians
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/11/20/world/middleeast/pushing-peace-on-the-palestinians.html

Dear Editor,

All of Israel's Jewish settlement projects in the occupied territories are illegal. Israelis might prefer to have the major "blocs" perceived as a border already in place, but that needs to be officially negotiated, not assumed.

Any and all provocative proposals by Israelis wishing to rig the game so that Palestinians end up with nothing but some crumbs from the table while Israel eats the cake are simply provocative proposals. Provocative proposals by either side are not wise well meaning plans aiming to help promote justice and peace and security for Israelis and for Palestinians.

Mr. Barlev's $14,000 parliamentary budget would have been better spent printing up copies of The Universal Declaration of Human Rights for presentation to fellow politicians, diplomats and thought leaders.

Negotiations to actually end the Israel-Palestine conflict must be firmly rooted in international law and The Universal Declaration of Human Rights: A fully secular two state solution to actually end the conflict once and for all really is in everyone's best interests.

Sincerely,
Anne Selden Annab

Dear Editor,

The big picture: A bit of a rift between America and Israel is not such a bad thing, for it gives everyone leeway to look around, research, reconsider and seriously think about what really is the best way forward... for everyone's sake.

The big picture: Concerns about the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East, as well as acts of aggression should not be limited to Iran: Israel's own aggressive tendencies have played a part in creating an arms race and a huge amount of hostility.

The big picture: Thinking about security not only for Israel but also for Palestine and for all their neighbors (and all Iran's neighbors), everyone, including Israel, should make it a priority to make peace with Palestine- a just and lasting peace based on full respect for international law and universal basic human rights.  The Arab Peace Initiative is an excellent reference concerning issues that need to be addressed and resolved.

The Arab Peace Initiative is also an obvious gesture of good will and diplomatic grace, for it emanates "from the conviction of the Arab countries that a military solution to the conflict will not achieve peace or provide security for the parties"

The big picture: Ending the Israel-Palestine conflict would go a long way towards calming down the entire region.

Sincerely,
Anne Selden Annab

PBS NewsHour 11-13-2013 How the Iran nuclear talks affect Israel's confidence in the U.S. as mediator ATFP's HUSSEIN IBISH:  "Obviously, if Israel's disappointed in the United States, it's very likely the United States is disappointed with Israel.

Look, our regional allies, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, et cetera, these are regional powers with regional interests. We are a global power with global interests. It's understandable if Israel is obsessed with Iran, and thinks only in terms of Iranian issues.

The United States can't do that. We have to deal with multiple issues. We have to deal with Syria. We have to deal with the Israeli-Palestinian crisis. We have to deal with repairing our relations with Saudi Arabia and Egypt, and many other things all over the world.

So you have got to come back to the Israeli-Palestinian file as one that the United States takes seriously on its own."

RAMALLAH (Ma’an) – A majority of respondents to an opinion poll conducted by al-Quds Open University believe that the 1994 Oslo Accord will not help establish a sovereign Palestinian state.

A majority of 74.1 percent of the respondents believe Oslo created “political normalization” between Israel and the Palestinian Authority, but the Palestinians gained nothing in return.

Similarly, 77.4 percent of the respondents say the agreement will not enable the Palestinians to establish a sovereign state.

Furthermore, 83.3 percent of the respondents believe that settlement construction increased “unprecedentedly” in the Palestinian territory as a result of the Oslo Accord.

Meanwhile, 83.1 percent say that the agreement enabled the Israeli side to continue to strengthen the Jewish presence in Jerusalem and gradually change the city to a pure Jewish property.

The plight of Palestinian refugees, who were forcibly displaced, was also negatively affected by the Oslo Accord, according to a majority of 78.3 percent of the respondents who believe the agreement marginalized and undermined the refugees’ plight.

Consequently, 55 percent of the respondents believe the best choice the Palestinian leadership can do is to amend the Oslo agreement so as to make it closer to recognition of Palestinian rights.

Reuters
UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - A routine U.N. General Assembly vote held special significance for the Palestinian delegation on Monday as it cast a ballot for the first time, an act the Palestinian envoy said brought his nation a step closer to full U.N. membership.

The chief Palestinian U.N. observer, Ambassador Riyad Mansour, participated in the 193-nation assembly's election of a judge for the International Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia. Koffi Kumelio Afande of Togo was elected to the court.

It was the first time the Palestinians cast a vote since their U.N. status was upgraded a year ago this month to "non-member state" from "entity," like the Vatican. The vote has been perceived as a de facto recognition of Palestinian statehood.

"This is a very, very special moment in the history of the struggle of the Palestinian people at the United Nations," Mansour told a small group of reporters.

"It's a symbolic (step)," he said. "But it is an important one because it reflects that the international community, particularly the General Assembly, is hungry and waiting for the state of Palestine to become a full member of the United Nations."

The upgrade of the Palestinians' status last year came after an attempt to secure full U.N. membership failed because of U.S. resistance in the Security Council, where Washington made clear it would use its veto power to block the Palestinian bid.

But no country has veto power in the General Assembly, which is why the Palestinians had no trouble securing status as a non-member state. The status upgrade allows them to participate in some assembly votes and join some international organizations...READ MORE

RAMALLAH (AFP) -- French President Francois Hollande on Monday called for a complete halt to Israel's settlement activities on occupied Palestinian territory.

"France demands a full and complete halt to settlement activity," he said at a joint news conference in Ramallah with his Palestinian counterpart Mahmoud Abbas.

Speaking on his first official visit to the Palestinian territories, the French leader warned that settlement construction was problematic for the peace talks which have been limping along for more than three months with little sign of progress.

"Settlement activity complicates the negotiations and makes it difficult to achieve a two-state solution," Hollande said.

Since Israeli and Palestinian negotiators returned to the table at the end of July, Israel has announced thousands of new settler homes in a move which has angered Ramallah.

But Abbas on Sunday told AFP that peace talks with Israel would continue for the full nine months agreed with Washington "regardless of what happens on the ground".

In talks with the Israeli leadership on Sunday, Hollande said France expected the government to make "gestures" with respect to settlement construction, although he did not indicate exactly what that might involve.

"If you want peace, you need to have gestures towards peace," he said.

NABLUS (Ma'an) -- Settlers destroyed at least 26 olive trees in the Nablus village of Qusra on Monday, a local official said.

Village mayor Abed al-Atheim told Ma'an that settlers from an illegal outpost south of Qusra chopped down 26 trees belonging to Talat Fawzi Hassan.

The settlers also damaged concrete agricultural structures belonging to Deeb Abdel Latif Hassan and Ali Abdul al-Hamid Hassan.

On Sunday, settlers destroyed 106 olive trees in Yatta.

In 2012, there were 353 incidents of settler violence against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

Over 7,500 olive trees were damaged or destroyed by settlers between January and mid-October in 2012, according to OCHA.

Since 1967, 800,000 olive trees have been uprooted in the occupied West Bank, resulting in a loss of around $55 million to the Palestinian economy, according to a report by the PA ministry and the Applied Research Institute Jerusalem.

The olive industry supports the livelihoods of roughly 80,000 families in the occupied West Bank.

JERUSALEM (Ma'an) -- Hundreds of Jewish extremists attacked a Palestinian man early Monday as he was driving through West Jerusalem, the victim told Ma'an.

Majdi Al-Jarbawi, 40, said that the attack began at 4 a.m. after stopping at traffic lights on Bar Ilan street, which runs through a majority Ultra-Orthodox neighborhood.

"When I stopped at the light, a large number of extremists surrounded my car and began screaming at me: 'Arab, Arab. He's an Arab', while throwing rocks at me from all sides," he told Ma'an.

Al-Jarbawi was hit in the face with a rock and the windshield of his car was completely smashed. He drove himself to a nearby hospital and then filed a complaint with Israeli police.

Last Wednesday, a Palestinian man was left in a coma after Israeli settlers dropped a large rock on him from a height near the Al-Aqsa Mosque.

In September, three Israeli settlers punched two Palestinian teenage girls in the face while walking through the Jewish Quarter of the Old City.

Dear Editor,

It is hard to fathom how, in a modern world, with full knowledge of the evils of institutionalized bigotry, Israel can continue systemically persecuting, impoverishing and displacing the native non-Jewish population of the Holy Land- sabotaging peace and Palestine, international law and universal basic human rights.

A fully secular two state solution ending the Israel-Palestine conflict ASAP would go a long way towards ending the very real plight of the Palestinians as well as the esoteric angst of Israelis: Religion should be a personal private choice, not a state funded farce aimed at jerry rigging demographics and citizenship rights.

Sincerely,
Anne Selden Annab

The Israelis also impose strict limits on water supply, which affects industry and agriculture. Israel has not allowed Palestinians access to 3G mobile technology, citing security concerns, rendering many smartphone apps largely useless....READ MORE

Ziad Asali: To honor a tragic history, we must work for peace: " Israelis and Palestinians are two peoples with traumatic histories. We must never forget them. But we must not be held hostage by history either. We must care more about the future of our grandchildren than the past of our grandparents, or even ourselves.

We must work together to build a future in which both peoples can enjoy the rights, responsibilities and dignity of citizenship and self-determination. There is only one way to actually accomplish this: by ending the occupation and creating a Palestinian state to live alongside Israel. Palestinians must recognize and accept Israel, a legitimate member state of the U.N. The Palestinians must have one place on earth, the territories occupied in 1967, where they can live freely as first-class citizens in an independent state. There is no other way to end the cycle of bloodshed, pain and hatred."

Israel's policy of erasure : A path to peace between Israelis and Palestinians requires not simply dealing with settlements but with the whole complex of displacement, suffocation and erasure.

Loved your editorial "Retraction for our 1863 editorial calling Gettysburg Address 'silly remarks'!

Hindsight certainly is 20/20. It really is totally impossible to know beyond an educated guess what speeches and stances will stand the tests of time, as well as what ideas and projects are a worthwhile investment. However we can try our best to be educated and compassionate, as well as humble, knowing that, as my brother was fond of saying when we were little: "No one is perfect."

In light of that fact, I cannot help but wish the Patriot News the best of luck, and hope that you have many, many more years ahead of publishing good, bad, and atrocious news and opinions.

Welcome to Bethlehem, Secretary Kerry: A call for humanity by Bethlehem Mayor Vera Baboun

Dear Secretary Kerry,
You are most welcome to the holy city of Bethlehem. It is an honor for me, as the mayor of Bethlehem, to welcome you on your most recent trip to our occupied homeland, in order to achieve the two-state solution, Israel and Palestine, living side by side in peace and security. The nobility of your goal makes me extremely proud of your visit, and particularly because Bethlehem serves for many as an eye-opener.

Our biblical city could be one of the driving forces for our state. Just to give you an example: The distance between the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem and the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem is only 10 kilometers, and a highway would link us with the Dead Sea in less than 20 minutes. However, Palestinian control in Bethlehem has been reduced to 13 percent of the district. The rest of our land has been taken either by Israeli settlers or by a foreign army. In fact, just as when Vice President Joe Biden visited back in 2010, some hours before your arrival, Israel approved hundreds of new housing units for settlements around our besieged city. This approval included units in Gilo and Har Homa, both built on our land with the goal of severing the historic connection between Bethlehem and Jerusalem.

Secretary Kerry, just as our city received Joseph and Mary more than 2,000 years ago, in 1948 Bethlehem received waves of refugees expelled from their homes in the Jerusalem area. Today they live mainly in three refugee camps in and around the city: Duheisha, al-Azza and Aida. Many have held onto the keys of their original homes for generations. Their keys, dear secretary, are not a symbol of revenge, but a call for humanity. They reflect an open wound that will only heal with the restoration of their dignity through the respect of their right to choose their future.

Secretary Kerry, we are a nation of refugees. We all have been victims of Israeli policies of forced displacement and replacement with foreign settlers by the State of Israel. This war crime must be stopped in order to give peace a chance. Today, while foreign settlers continue to flow into our district, thousands of daughters and sons of Bethlehem are spread all over the world, in places as far flung as Australia, Chile and the US, all of them denied right to return to their homeland. This is morally unacceptable.

Dear Secretary, we have heard about your economic projects for Palestine. They seem to be very positive and the people of Bethlehem are grateful for the attention you have given to our city. But please allow me to reiterate that no true economic development is possible as far as Israel continues its occupation of our country. As the World Bank confirmed a few weeks ago, we continue to lose billions of dollars because of the Israeli occupation.

Once we are free we are ready to develop our state just as successful Palestinian professionals have helped to develop the economies of wherever they have lived. Now it is their time to freely develop their own country without any foreign intervention. It is Palestine’s time to reach her potential, beginning with freedom of movement, and genuine sovereignty, including control over our international borders. In our case, Secretary Kerry, the same wall that you will come through to enter our city must fall in order to revitalize our historic ties with East Jerusalem, our national capital.

In Bethlehem we resist the occupation with love and hope. I hope you will have the chance to participate in one of the weekly Catholic masses that our community organizes at Cremisan; a time where we pray against the latest expropriation orders that will leave 58 Palestinian Christian families without access to their lands in one of the last green areas left in our district. I hope you might also find time to witness the steadfastness of the people of Walaja, a community that was originally displaced in 1948 and that today is being completely encircled by the Israeli annexation wall. Perhaps you might see the peaceful demonstrations of the people of Maasara, who are violently repressed by Israeli occupation forces, or the advocacy work of the people of Artas, Khirbet Nakhle and the southern Bethlehem area against new plans to expand the settlement of Efrat on their lands.

Dear Secretary Kerry, you are most welcome in Bethlehem, a city surrounded by 27 ever-expanding Israeli settlements, sealed off by an annexation wall built deep inside our district’s land. Even under these circumstances, we are working hard to look after our city. The restorations to the Nativity Church supported by UNESCO after Palestine obtained full membership in the organization, is another great example of how, in Bethlehem, we defy the occupation with love and creativity. Dear Secretary Kerry, you are most welcome to our city, please feel at home.

Sincerely,

Vera Baboun, Mayor of Bethlehem
