‘I couldn’t cry over my children like everyone else’: the tragedy of Palestinian journalist Wael al-Dahdouh. After his wife and two of his children were killed in Gaza, Al Jazeera journalist Wael al-Dahdouh became famous around the world for his decision to keep reporting. But this was just the start of his heartbreaking journey By Nesrine Malik

Wael al-Dahdouh was live on air when he realised something was wrong. It was 25 October 2023, about 5pm, and Al Jazeera’s bureau chief in Gaza was standing on the roof of the channel’s office building, speaking about the day’s airstrikes. “It’s going to be a bloody night,” said Dahdouh, his voice playing over live images of the skyline, as explosions flared on the horizon.

Out of the corner of his eye, Dahdouh noticed his nephew Hamdan, a producer with Al Jazeera, looking agitated. Then Dahdouh’s mobile phone, slotted in his flak jacket, began to ring. Hamdan reached over, pulled the phone out and answered it. It was an odd thing to do while they were on air, Dahdouh thought. Alarmed, he addressed Hamdan. “Who is it?” Dahdouh asked, still audible to viewers. After a few seconds on the phone, Hamdan angrily kicked a wall. “What’s going on?” Dahdouh asked. Hamdan replied: “Your daughter. The girl is in the hospital. They have struck the place where your wife and family are.” Dahdouh took the phone. As viewers continued to see live scenes from Gaza, they could hear Dahdouh’s rising alarm and Hamdan’s flustered interjections in the background. Then the transmission cut to the studio in Doha.

On the phone was Dahdouh’s 21-year-old daughter, Khulood, who was bewildered and unable to give him a clear idea of what was happening. He hung up and rushed to Nuseirat camp seven miles away, where his wife and seven of his eight children had been sheltering in an Israeli-designated safe zone. When he arrived about 40 minutes later, Dahdouh found a chaotic scene. People were digging in the rubble with their hands, using their mobile phone torches to see. Some were in tears, others wailing the names of the dead. In the debris, Dahdouh found his 18-month-old grandson, Adam, covered in dust, unconscious. Cradling the boy in his arms, Dahdouh raced to al-Aqsa martyrs hospital 15 minutes away.

In the melee outside the hospital, Dahdouh found Khulood. When she saw Adam’s body in her father’s arms, she began screaming and stroking her nephew’s face. Then she collapsed, taking Dahdouh down with her, still clutching the toddler. Dahdouh staggered to his feet. Inside the building, he handed Adam to a doctor and began to search for the rest of his family, lurching through the throngs also looking for their loved ones, through corridors full of the wounded. Dahdouh’s reporting had made him famous in Gaza, and as he continued his search, asking if anyone had seen his wife and children, he started to realise that people were avoiding him, as if they knew something he didn’t. Then an ambulance brought in his youngest son, 12-year-old Yahya. His skull was exposed and his head drenched in blood, but he was conscious. Dahdouh rushed him to a doctor who began to sew up his wounds on the spot. There was no anaesthetic. Yahya screamed in pain... Israel's Attack on America's USS Liberty in 1967

On June 8, 1967, US Navy intelligence ship USS Liberty was suddenly and brutally attacked on the high seas in international waters by the air and naval forces of Israel. The Israeli forces attacked with full knowledge that this was an American ship and lied about it.

Survivors have been forbidden for 40 years to tell their story under oath to the American public. The USS Liberty Memorial web site tells their story and is dedicated to the memory of the 34 brave men who died.

The Attack

After surveilling USS Liberty for more than nine hours with almost hourly aircraft overflights and radar tracking, the air and naval forces of Israel attacked our ship in international waters without warning. USS Liberty was identified as a US naval ship by Israeli reconnaissance aircraft nine hours before the attack and continuously tracked by Israeli radar and aircraft thereafter. Sailing in international waters at less than five knots, with no offensive armament, our ship was not a military threat to anyone.

The Israeli forces attacked without warning and without attempting to contact us. Thirty four Americans were killed in the attack and another 174 were wounded.   The ship, a $40-million dollar state-of-the-art signals intelligence platform, was later declared unsalvageable and sold for scrap.

The Cover Up

Despite a near-universal consensus that the Israeli attack was made with full knowledge that USS Liberty was a US Navy ship, the Johnson administration began an immediate cover-up of this fact. Though administration officers continued individually to characterize the attack as deliberate, the Johnson administration never sought the prosecution of the guilty parties or otherwise attempted to seek justice for the victims. They concealed and altered evidence in their effort to downplay the attack. Though they never formally accepted the Israeli explanation that it was an accident, they never pressed for a full investigation either. They simply allowed those responsible literally to get away with murder.

In an ongoing effort to reveal the truth about the attack, the USS Liberty Veterans Association has filed with the Secretary of the Army in the manner prescribed by law a detailed, fully documented Report of War Crimes describing the circumstances of the attack on our ship and evidence that it was a crime under international law. In accordance with international law and treaties, the United States is obligated to investigate the allegations. So far, the United States has declined even to acknowledge that the report has been filed. The full text of the report can be found at http://www.gtr5.com/evidence/warcrimes.pdf

Anti-Semitism and the Anti-American Apologists

The USS Liberty Memorial web site abhors the racist and extreme positions taken by antiSemitic, Holocaust denial, conspiracy theorist and other such groups which often seek to identify with us and to usurp our story as their own. We have no connection with and do not support or encourage support from any of these groups including National Alliance, National Vanguard, The New Order, National Socialists, The French Connection, Liberty Lobby, American Free Press, Republic Broadcasting, USS Liberty Radio Hour, Storm Front or other such groups. We wish harm to no one and encourage social justice and equality for everyone; we seek only accountability for the criminal acts perpetrated against us and can do that without help from hate-mongers.

On the Israeli side, the group of pro-Israel, anti-American critics of our story, while small, persists in launching loud, vicious ad hominem attacks on anyone who attempts to discuss the deliberateness of the attack. These anti-American apologists refuse to discuss the facts of the case. Instead, they rely on propaganda and charge anyone who questions the Israeli position with being antiSemitic.

For detailed and authoritative accounts of the power and influence of the pro-Israel lobby, please see The Israel Lobby and US Foreign Policy by Mearsheimer and Walt and The Pro-Israel Lobby by Edward Herman.

The Betrayal of American Veterans
.
Americans who volunteer for military service effectively write a blank check, payable to the United States of America for an amount "up to and including my life." The United States, in turn, promises to spend these checks responsibly. That bargain implicitly includes a promise by the United States to protect them and to seek retribution against anyone who harms them. In the case of USS Liberty, the United States has failed to keep its end of the bargain.

'We're Fed Up With It': Survivors of the USS Liberty Look for Answers ...

" "Heroism was the order of the day, and every man who could help, stepped up to help," said Bowen.

The attack, which left 34 Americans dead and 174 others injured -- two-thirds of the crew in total, according to a press release organized by the Liberty Veterans Association -- has been veiled in controversy since it happened, with survivors, and even some former senior intelligence officials, pointing to a deliberate bombardment by Israel and a subsequent U.S. dismissal of the event to pardon its ally. "My hero Wael Eldahdouh. If he wasn’t Palestinian, he’d be the most famous face in the world decorating the covers of every magazine as person of the year"

My hero Wael Eldahdouh

Omar Suleiman "My hero Wael Eldahdouh. If he wasn’t Palestinian, he’d be the most famous face in the world decorating the covers of every magazine as person of the year. A man who has almost lost his life multiple times, yet never lost the will to keep covering the crimes against his people. When Israel bombed his wife and kids whom he loved so dearly, he persisted. When they shot him and killed his cameraman yesterday, he still cried out to the paramedics to go to those who had more severe injuries. And he continued to report even from his hospital bed. A symbol of courage. A symbol of hope. A symbol of faith. I love you my brother Wael. May Allah preserve you for us, and unite you with your loved ones once again in paradise. Ameen" {AMEN}

Al Jazeera has referred Israel's most recent targeted intentional assassination of journalist Samer Abu Daqqa to the International Criminal Court.

Al Jazeera has referred the "assassination" of its journalist Samer Abu Daqqa to the International Criminal Court.

Samer Abu Daqqa - Palestinian photojournalist, killed bu an Israeli airstrike on a school sheltering displaced Palestinians in Gaza

The Guardian: "Cameraman Samer Abu Daqqa and correspondent Wael al-Dahdouh had gone to Farhana school in the southern city of Khan Younis after it was hit by a strike earlier in the day. While they were there, an Israeli drone hit the school with a second strike, the network said.

“The network holds Israel accountable for systematically targeting and killing their journalists and their families,” Al Jazeera said in a statement.

“Following Samer’s injury he was left to bleed to death for over five hours, as Israeli forces prevented ambulances and rescue workers from reaching him, denying the much-needed emergency treatment,” it continued."

Samer Abu Daqqa died after attack while network’s chief correspondent in territory, Wael al-Dahdouh, was injured https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/dec/16/al-jazeera-cameraman-killed-in-israeli-strike-on-gaza-school-broadcaster-says

Al Jazeera has referred the "assassination" of its journalist Samer Abu Daqqa to the International Criminal Court.

The Al Jazeera cameraman died on Friday after going to Farhana school in the southern city of Khan Younis after it was hit by a strike earlier in the day.

While he was there, a missile the Qatari-based network says was fired by an Israeli drone hit the school with a second strike, badly injuring Abu Daqqa.

The Israeli military prevented emergency services from reaching him, resulting in him bleeding to death.

"We decided to urgently refer the case of the assassination of our colleague photographer Samer Abu Daqqa to the International Criminal Court," Al Jazeera tweeted on Saturday.

Samer Abu Daqqa was murdered on 15 December 2023 "during an air strike that targeted the Al Jazeera crew while covering the Haifa School airstrike in Khan Yunis during the 2023 Israel–Hamas war. Wael Al-Dahdouh was injured in his hand and stomach, but was able to withdraw on foot. Samer, however, was unable to withdraw after his injury and continued to bleed for more than five hours, eventually succumbing to his wounds. Abu Daqqa was 45"  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samer_Abu_Daqqa

Wael Dahdouh lost his wife, as well as a son, a daughter and a grandson, in what Al Jazeera reported was an Israeli airstrike that hit Nuseirat refugee camp in Gaza. Another son, Yehia, was seriously wounded.

"It's a difficult moment in the life of a Palestinian journalist, when they go to cover an incident for the news and find out that the news is their own family"   Wael Dahdouh

Taj Ali

"The IDF killed his wife, daughter, son and grandson. Yesterday they injured him & killed his colleague Samer Abu Daqqa. And continues to report.

Solidarity with him & every journalist in Gaza. Without them, many of the horrors on the ground would remain invisible."

Ilhan Omar's refusal to 'pledge allegiance' to Israel does not make her antisemitic

Congresswoman Ilhan Omar defended herself in a series of tweets posted on Sunday night:

"Our democracy is built on debate, Congresswoman! I should not be expected to have allegiance/pledge support to a foreign country in order to serve my country in Congress or serve on committee," she said.

"I have not mischaracterized our relationship with Israel, I have questioned it and that has been clear from my end.

"I am told everyday that I am anti-American if I am not pro-Israel. I find that to be problematic and I am not alone.

"I just happen to be willing to speak up on it and open myself to attacks."

"House Democrats will vote Wednesday on a resolution condemning anti-Semitism in response to comments made last week by Representative Ilhan Omar (D., N.Y.) that were deemed anti-Semitic by a number of prominent fellow Democrats.

It remains unclear whether the resolution, which was first reported by the Washington Post, will condemn Omar by name or just anti-Semitism in general." https://news.yahoo.com/house-dems-introduce-anti-semitism-195915822.html

Merriam Webster Dictionary Definition of anti-Semitism

Definition of prejudice

: an irrational attitude of hostility directed against an individual, a group, a race, or their supposed characteristics

Seems to me the nasty anti-Muslim hate mongering directed towards destroying Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar is what should be condemned by our Congress....

"I'm neither Israeli or Palestinian. I am just a military veteran fed up with $10.5 million dollars of taxpayer money each day going to Israel to fund an apartheid regime. Further, I am disturbed by the fact that nearly every death of a US service member during the last 30 years is usually tied to an Israeli agenda (Google: The Greater Israel Project) and nothing to do with our national security and those deaths fly in the face of the oath we took when we swore in."

"We are brothers. It's not a question of Jews, of Christians or of Muslims. We're all in the same boat, we have to help each other to get out of this crisis." Lassana Bathily

Lassana Bathily, Muslim Employee At Kosher Market, Saved Several People During Paris Hostage Situation

In an interview with the French channel BFMTV, Mr. Bathily said he ushered about 15 people into the basement room after the gunman burst into the shop. He then turned off the power and the lights.

“We were locked in there,” he said. “I told them to calm down, not make any noise, or else if he hears that we’re there, he can come down and kill us.”

Muslim Employee of Kosher Market in Paris Praised for Hiding Customers From Gunman

As news of his heroics spread on Saturday, there were numerous calls on social networks to reward him for his bravery with either the Legion of Honor, France’s highest award, or French citizenship.

Some observers also connected his actions to the hashtag used to praise Ahmed Merabet, a Muslim police officer killed on Wednesday by the gunmen who launched the deadly attack on the offices of Charlie Hebdo, a satirical weekly.
