"Fashion has always been political. Now, demonstrators are putting pro-Palestinian slogans and symbols on their clothes – and not just for marches" REPORTING by Ellie Violet Bramley. Photographs by Ethan Parker in The Guardian

Wear it loud, wear it proud: how marchers for Gaza are bringing ‘protest dressing’ up to date

It’s early afternoon at the latest national march for Gaza in central London. A man is wearing a sweatshirt bearing a photograph of Hind Rajab, the five-year-old girl who was killed in the Gaza conflict last year along with family members and the paramedics who tried to save her. He doesn’t want to be named. But it is, he says, his attempt “to keep her memory alive, until we get justice … Whether it takes one month, one year, 100 years, I’m not giving up. I’m not going to stop wearing this until the killers are behind bars.”

It’s a heart-rending example of a phenomenon common to all these marches over the past two years: people are here to call for an end to the war and the Israeli occupation, and many are using their clothes to bolster their message.

Far from being a frivolous afterthought, protest dressing has become an important part of these marches. Wearing the symbols and colours of solidarity can be an expression of grief and a call to action.

“Enough is enough,” says Mariama, who is in her 30s and works for the NHS in Nottingham. She is wearing a football-style shirt with a Palestinian flag in place of the club crest. Alongside it are the words “viva Palestina” and a visual representation of the contested area.

“It’s one way of giving voice to your opposition, my opposition, to the occupation of Palestine,” says the Rev Poppy Hughes, 65, of her Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC) pin badge. Otherwise “there’s nothing to identify you as somebody who’s opposed to the occupation and the genocide and the starvation.”

There’s a sense of shared project about it. “You feel more united when you’re sharing the dress code,”... READ MORE  https://www.theguardian.com/fashion/2025/sep/19/wear-it-loud-wear-it-proud-how-marchers-for-gaza-are-bringing-protest-dressing-up-to-date

Civilians made up 15 of every 16 people killed by Israel in Gaza since March, data suggests Report from independent conflict tracker Acled indicates one of the highest civilian death rates since start of war

About 15 of every 16 Palestinians the Israeli military has killed since its renewed offensive in Gaza began in March have been civilians, data collected by the independent violence-tracking organisation Acled indicates.

The civilian death rate implied by a report from Acled, which stands for Armed Conflict Location and Event Data, is one of the highest recorded during the conflict, and will increase international pressure on Israel as its forces advance into Gaza City, forcing up to a million people to evacuate and threatening further large-scale civilian casualties.

Researchers from Acled, which is backed by western governments and the UN, tracked reports of losses sustained by Hamas and allied armed groups in Gaza from the Israeli military, reliable local and international media, statements from Hamas and other sources over a six-month period.

“Since 18 March, Israel claims it killed more than 2,100 operatives, though Acled data indicates that the number is closer to 1,100, and includes Hamas’ political figures, as well as fighters from other groups,” the report said.

More than 16,000 Palestinians have been killed since Israel broke a two-month ceasefire in March with a huge wave of airstrikes across the devastated territory, according to statistics published by the UN.

Military officials briefed the 2,100 figure to Israeli media in mid-August and internal Israeli estimates may have risen since. Acled’s researchers may also not have captured all combatant deaths over the six-month period, but their total does include Hamas political figures.

The Guardian revealed last month that internal data from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) indicated a civilian death toll of 83% between the outbreak of war in October 2023 and May of this year.

The Acled report also found that incidents involving the demolition of buildings in Gaza had increased significantly since the renewal of hostilities in March, with 698 in the 15 months before, and 500 in the six months since. Many incidents involved more than one building, researchers said... Dear America- The weapons industry and a global war machine- AND INJUSTICE- burgeon with American tax payer funds.

United Nations Security Council in 2014

United Nations: Last night, a draft resolution demanding an immediate, unconditional & permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and an immediate release of all hostages was NOT adopted in the Security Council, due to a [ONE] veto... by the United States.

Dear America,

Has our democracy already shifted into a debilitating epoch of pervasive commercial /government propaganda on all airwaves, streaming services, and cell phones as well as in our Congress, the White House, and other such halls of power so that uber-wealthy wannabes can become even more wealthy by impoverishing and silencing others?

Political violence is the harassment and/or murder of an 'other'...  Fact is every 'other' is actually part of a wonderfully diverse and interesting human family. Good and bad are a constant interplay within each individual, and in every society.  The rule of fair and just laws coupled with full respect for universal human rights helps keep bad in check.

There is nothing glorious or good about terrorism of any type, despite the popularity of movies and video games that use violence as a happy ending.  Violence is not a solution, or a happy ending- it is a problem- a huge problem.

The weapons industry and a global war machine burgeon with American tax payer funds.  Meanwhile there is an extensive de-funding of American schools; libraries; National Parks; Museums; the Arts; public TV and radio; science and research; healthcare; The United Nations and global diplomacy; etc...

News as entertainment has created quite a monster, including the bread & circuses echo chamber click bait designed to sell whatever AI deems most profitable to generate.

FYI are you aware that Israel spends vast sums on propaganda ads.

And are you aware that as Norman Solomon says: "Jews and Israel are not the same. Equating them is a propaganda technique. The claim is central to rationales for arming Israel even as leading human rights groups decry genocide in Gaza."

‘Running from death to death’: Gaza City residents face impossible choice

IDF has launched its Gaza City ground offensive, displacing people south – but many will stay despite the risks

The bombardment of Gaza City has been growing louder and more deadly for weeks, but in the early hours of Tuesday it felt like an earthquake that would never stop.

“Even when the bombings are not right next to us, we can clearly hear them, and the ground shakes beneath us with the intensity of the explosions,” said Fatima al-Zahra Sahweil, 40.

Sahweil, a media researcher, said the dead and wounded from the night’s barrage had been taken to al-Shifa medical complex, where she heard the situation was “catastrophic”.

She had lost track of the latest news, however, as she tried to make the near-impossible decision of what to do to best protect her four children.

The Rashid coast road, the Israeli-designated “escape” route to the south, was jammed with the exhausted and desperate. Anyway, the cost of a ride was too high.

“On top of that, I don’t own a tent to give us shelter, and they are too expensive to buy. I would not be able to take all of the belongings and supplies I have already bought several times before,” Sahweil said. “Then there is the suffering we would face in searching for water and the lack of empty spaces to stay in. So if I leave, I would simply be going into the unknown.”

Like more than 90% of people in Gaza, the family has been displaced by the war. An overwhelming majority have been forced to move numerous times. Sahweil and her family have already been displaced 19 times.

Now, with the launch of a ground offensive, the Israeli army is calling on the estimated 1 million people sheltering in Gaza City to move south once more. But Sahweil and her family, and many others, have been to the south before and are aware it is no haven from violence.

“It didn’t feel like life at all,” she said of her time in southern Gaza earlier in the war. “Living in a tent with insects, rats, sand, the heat of summer, the cold of winter, and the rain, it was an unbearable period.

UK preparing to recognise Palestinian state as early as Friday- Move comes after Israel fails to meet UK conditions that would have postponed step

The UK is preparing to recognise the state of Palestine as early as Friday, after Israel failed* to meet conditions that would have postponed the historic step, including a ceasefire in Gaza.

Keir Starmer insisted the timing of the UK announcement had nothing to do with Donald Trump’s visit, even though the US president said at a press conference that he disagreed with Britain’s decision, without elaborating.

Recognition will bring a wave of criticism from Israel, including claims that it is a reward for Hamas and terrorism, a charge the UK rejects by saying it envisages only a Palestinian state in which Hamas is disarmed, plays no part in the future government, and the leadership of the Palestinian Authority is subject to elections within a year.

Starmer emphasised there would be no place for Hamas, insisting the group were terrorists, and adding he agreed with Trump on the need for a roadmap.

The UK prime minister said recognition was “part of that overall package which hopefully takes us from the appalling situation we’re in now to the outcome of a safe and secure Israel, which we do not have, and a viable Palestinian state”... * "conditions that if fulfilled would delay UK recognition of Palestine. These included a resumption of humanitarian aid, a ceasefire, Israeli engagement in a sustained peace process, and no further Israeli land annexations in the West Bank. Israel was never likely to meet these preconditions, making UK recognition largely an issue of timing rather than content.

Britain’s choice has been whether to wait for a UN conference on Monday on a two-state solution or go earlier. Prompting the decision is anger at Israel’s treatment of Palestinians and a sense that if Britain does not act now Israel will, through annexation, have destroyed the last hope of Palestinian self-determination."

More than a quarter of a million people have been displaced from Gaza City in the last month, according to figures from the UN, with tens of thousands more forced to flee makeshift homes and shelters daily in the face of a new Israeli offensive.

Strikes by Israeli artillery, tanks and warplanes hit Gaza City again on Thursday as a UN official said “new waves of mass displacement” were under way, after about 60,000 fled the new assault in 72 hours earlier this week.

Israeli military officials say the total number following Israeli orders to evacuate Gaza City is much higher.

An unbroken column of traffic heavily laden with household utensils, blankets, mattresses, gas cylinders and often entire families packed Gaza’s narrow coastal road on Thursday as a steady stream of Palestinians headed south towards areas designated by Israel.

Prices for transport have soared, forcing some to walk, laden with belongings and young children. “We are heading to go sleep on the streets towards the beach, like this, barefoot … READ MORE  https://www.theguardian.com/world/2025/sep/18/un-figures-people-displaced-from-gaza-city

#Gaza has been the battleground of a fierce & rampant information war.

Dis-information continues to be used as a tool to distract from the atrocities in the war-torn enclave.

The first target was @UNRWA followed by other UN agencies, the media & health institutions.

The recent denial of famine in #Gaza as well as of the conclusions of the UN commission of inquiry released this week are the latest examples. They aim at undermining world experts assessments + analysis & at promoting narratives denying atrocities + dehumanizing Palestinians.

Meanwhile, the heroic work of Palestinian journalists continues against all odds as the Israeli military operations expand.

It’s time to let international journalists into Gaza to support their Palestinian colleagues before their voices are also silenced.

Time to report independently on events.

At least 2,000 desperate & hungry people have been killed while seeking food aid. The vast majority were killed near sites of the so called “Gaza humanitarian foundation”.

This deadly mechanism is manned by mercenaries including anti-Muslim gangsters @BBC

Addressing famine in #Gaza requires uninterrupted, at scale & safe access to people in need wherever they are. The UN, including @UNRWA + partners have the resources & the expertise.

Let us do our job

#Gaza is being obliterated, reduced to a wasteland.

Gaza is being emptied from its starving population forced to move into the so called “humanitarian” area of Mawasi.

There is no safe place in Gaza, let alone a humanitarian zone. It is a large and growing camp concentrating hungry Palestinians in despair.

Warnings of #famine have fallen on deaf ears.

Will warnings of this deepening catastrophe also fall on deaf ears? #Ceasefire, before it is way too late.

End the impunity before atrocities become the new norm.

It has been 18 months since the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled that Israel must take all measures within its power to prevent the commission of genocide, including acting in full co-operation with the United Nations, to ensure the unhindered provision of urgently needed basic services & humanitarian assistance.

The UN Commission of Inquiry has concluded in its report yesterday that: “Far from cooperating with the United Nations […] Israel responded by proscribing and excluding the principal UN agency providing aid and humanitarian assistance, @UNRWA”.

In finding that the State of Israel has committed genocide, the Commission stated that through: “interconnected political and politicised measures”, including the establishment of the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), Israel has blocked and obstructed trusted aid agencies (including UNRWA) from bringing in essential and life-saving aid, for the purposes of bringing about “the physical destruction of the Palestinians in #Gaza through unlivable conditions of life in the Gaza Strip”.

I urge all Member States to demand an immediate ceasefire in Gaza & facilitate the unfettered deployment of the United Nations’ humanitarian operations – including UNRWA’s expertise with its unparalleled aid distribution network – to reverse #famine & provide critical assistance to people in need. #CeasefireNow

Fact check: Israel spends vast sums on propaganda ads

Kathrin Wesolowski
September 8, 2025

Israel spends millions of euros on propaganda, much of it targeted at European audiences. A series of videos seek to downplay Gaza food scarcity.

A cross-border investigation by members of the Eurovision News Spotlight, including DW Fact Check, has uncovered that the state of Israel has used its Government Advertising Agency to run paid international campaigns aimed at shaping public opinion in parts of Europe and North America.

For at least a year, an Israeli YouTube account has been running ad campaigns that discredit UN agencies and challenge the findings of internationally recognized watchdogs.

A government document reveals  that at least €42 million (approx. $49 million) has been spent on ad campaigns across platforms like YouTube and X since mid-June 2025. These efforts are part of Israel's broader public diplomacy strategy known as "Hasbara," a Hebrew term which roughly translates to "explaining" and is used to describe efforts to promote Israel's image abroad.

On August 22, the same day as the publication of the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) assessment that there is a famine in large parts of the Gaza Strip, the Israeli Government Advertising Agency launched a new campaign denying the famine.

Two videos were promoted via paid ads on the official YouTube channel of the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which is verified with a black check mark.

The videos show markets full of food and restaurants serving meals, allegedly filmed in Gaza during July and August 2025. They feature onscreen text and an AI-generated voiceover, ending with the statement: "There is food in Gaza. Any other claim is a lie."

These videos have been viewed more than 18 million times and have been published  in English, Italian, German and Polish

Targeted messaging and misleading narratives

According to Google's Ad Transparency Center,

YouTube ads can be targeted by gender, age and region. Israel targeted viewers in Germany, Austria, Italy, Poland, the United Kingdom and the United States, according to Google.

Open restaurants don't prove there's no famine in Gaza

DW Fact check analyzed one of the videos and traced the original clips to the social media accounts of the featured restaurants (here are some examples). Most of the video clips were posted in June and July 2025. However, the presence of open restaurants does not disprove the existence of famine.

Several restaurants mentioned supply shortages, inflation and temporary closures.

We contacted all of the restaurants and cafes featured in the video. For example, Estkana Cafe, in the Rimal neighborhood of Gaza City, confirmed frequent closures due to a lack of food staples.

They said that commercial-sized bags of flour were being sold for the equivalent of hundreds of euros, but the prices changed depending on the day and the broader state of supply in the enclave. Menu items at the cafe at the end of August included a Nutella waffle that cost around €25 (some $29), and a small dessert with nuts and chocolate, which was similarly priced.

Another restaurant, O2, based in Gaza City, posted its menu on their Instagram story on September 3 with its prices. A Nutella crepe costs around €12 here.

Firsthand accounts confirm high prices

Riham Abu Aita, co-founder of the Palestinian fact-checking platform and Media Literacy group "Kashif," confirmed the high prices during her training sessions in Gaza from April to July.

"We bought one kilo of sugar for 250 shekels [around €65]. A piece of bread with one piece of falafel cost 30 shekels [around €8] at the time," she told DW.

At the end of July, 2025, a video published by outlets including The Jerusalem Post showed a vegetable stall in Gaza, prompting skepticism about famine claims. DW Fact check spoke with the Palestinian journalist Majdi Fathi, the journalist who filmed the footage, who confirmed its authenticity but emphasized, "These vegetables and fruits are very expensive. The majority of people in Gaza cannot afford them."

Abu Aita added: "Not all the areas in Gaza are suffering the same. If there's a siege in one city, maybe you can find food in another city," adding that even then, prices are extremely high.

DW concludes that the videos promoted by the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs are misleading. While food may be available in some areas, it is scarce or unaffordable in others. There's proof that famine (IPC phase 5) is currently occurring in the Gaza Governorate and projected to spread to Deir al-Balah and Khan Younis by the end of September.

The propaganda videos denying famine were not only spread on YouTube but on many other Israeli channels on several platforms and in several European languages.

DW contacted Israel's Ministry for Foreign Affairs as well as the Government Press Office to ask why the ad campaigns only targeted the six countries mentioned above and how the government would describe the current food situation in Gaza.

They referred us to the Embassy of Israel in Berlin. The embassy staff responded by referring to a Foreign Ministry statement posted on X reiterating the claim that "there is no famine in Gaza." They also shared a document allegedly sent to the IPC, disputing its findings. Their response did not mention DW's question about the ad campaign.

Israel's sponsored ads target IPC

DW also discovered a sponsored link appearing at the top of Google search results for users searching "IPC famine." The link leads to an Israeli government page challenging the IPC's methodology and accusing it of using misrepresented data.

The page states: "The declaration was issued not only without evidence that would justify it under the IPC's own criteria but also based on partial or misrepresented data — most prominently an alleged breach of the acute malnutrition threshold presented as key justification." The IPC has denied these claims, stating that its standards remain unchanged.

The first Google search result is a sponsored post discrediting the IPC Gaza famine report

This type of sponsored post can also be easily targeted to specific users looking for specific information, according to Google's Ad Transparency Center. Google did not respond to our request regarding Israel's ad campaign.

Disinformation on both sides

While both sides have been accused of spreading disinformation, DW's sources suggest that the volume and scale of misleading content is currently greater on the pro-Israel side.

"I think Israel is now facing an unprecedented risk of isolation from the international community," says Tommaso Canetta, fact-checking coordinator at the European Digital Media Observatory (EDMO), in an interview with DW.

He sees a clear goal behind the Israeli propaganda and disinformation being spread in several European languages: "Their general idea is to win the sympathy of the Western public opinion in Europe and also in the United States."

For Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, more and more countries recognizing the Palestinian state is "a huge diplomatic defeat," according to Canetta.

Canetta notes that the Palestinian side is also actively spreading disinformation; however, "it's clear that right now we are seeing more disinformation coming from the pro-Israel side of things."
