Under the cover of war, the cooperation between the military and Israeli settler militias is deepening the ethnic cleansing of the West Bank. This is what has been happening on the ground since the start of the Israeli-American offensive in Iran

 Roadblocks and movement restrictions 

As soon as the IsraeliAmerican offensive against Iran began, Israel imposed sweeping movement restrictions on Palestinians in the West Bank. Most towns and villages were fully or partially sealed off to both inbound and outbound traffic, and travel between different parts of the West Bank has also been blocked.

Attacks by Israeli settler militias 

Taking advantage of the war, armed settler militias, often operating with support from the army, continue to attack and harass Palestinian communities across the West Bank in an effort to force them out. The attacks include: 

Raids on Palestinian shepherding communities and villages, home searches, livestock theft, vandalism, and assaults using clubs and stones on residents defending their homes and livestock, causing severe injuries.

 Live fire and fatalities: 

In some raids, armed settlers fire at Palestinian residents. On Monday, 2 March, a settler shot and killed two brothers in the village of Qaryut; other shootings across the West Bank left additional Palestinians injured.

Land takeovers and economic damage: 

Settlers deliberately graze livestock in Palestinians’ cultivated fields, destroy crops and stored food, steal livestock, and vandalize solar panels and water tanks. Settlers have also used bulldozers to raze and take over privately owned Palestinian land. 

Army raids and home takeovers: 

The Israeli military has launched raids and mass arrests in villages throughout the West Bank. Soldiers have taken over at least 55 homes inside Palestinian communities (as of Thursday evening), where they remain for extended periods without clear military necessity. In several cases, soldiers forced families out of their homes, leaving them without shelter during war, while the soldiers themselves are protected inside the homes they invaded. 

Military takeover of Palestinian family homes is a practice Israel employed during its previous war on Iran in June 2025. It is a grave violation of the basic rights of Palestinian residents, first and foremost, the right to life.

Fuel and gas shortage 

As the fuel shortage across the West Bank worsens, gas and fueling stations have seen long lines and rationing has been introduced.  

Missiles and lack of protection 

Missile fragments have fallen in several areas in the West Bank in the districts of Hebron, Bethlehem, Ramallah, Jenin, Nablus, and east of Jerusalem. The nearly three million Palestinians living in the West Bank have no access to shelters or warning systems, in stark contrast to the hundreds of Israeli settlements that have both.

Israeli authorities have unleashed a series of unlawful measures such as land registration, that are deliberately designed to dispossess Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and to make the annexation of the territory an irreversible reality.

Israel/OPT: Global impunity fueling Israel’s unlawful annexation measures in the West Bank

Since December 2025, Israeli authorities have unleashed a series of unlawful measures deliberately designed to dispossess Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and to make the annexation of the territory an irreversible reality, Amnesty International said today.   

These decisions represent an unprecedented escalation – in scale and speed – in Israel’s project to expand illegal settlements. They facilitate the takeover of more Palestinian land, authorize a record number of new settlements, expanding existing ones, and formalize registration of land in the West Bank as Israeli state property. While successive Israeli governments have pursued policies aimed at expanding settlements and entrenching occupation and apartheid, the latest measures underscore how the current Israeli government has turbocharged these efforts, in the shadow of the genocide in Gaza.

• A U.N. agency has tallied more than 1,000 attacks on Palestinians by Israeli settlers in the West Bank so far this year.

TAYBEH, West Bank — “Come visit Taybeh,” begins the brochure touting the touristic attractions here, the last entirely Palestinian Christian village in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

Though it counts Jesus among its many visitors over the years, said Khaldoon Hanna, Taybeh’s avuncular deputy mayor, these days “no one is coming.”

He sighed as he looked around the restaurant he owns on the village’s Main Street. It felt abandoned, with little trace of activity in the kitchen and a layer of dust coating most tables. Only one faucet worked in the bathroom, but it didn’t feel worth it to repair the rest.

“In the last two years, I haven’t had more than 20 tourists come in here,” Hanna said.

How could they, Hanna said, when you have to negotiate a growing gantlet of Israeli roadblocks just to get here? Airdropping aid is a PR trick and dangerous distraction- it is not a good way to get food to starving children in Gaza... What’s needed is safe access by road. Let aid in through the UN, including UNRWA: "Opening all the crossings and flooding Gaza with assistance is the only way to avert further deepening of starvation among the people of Gaza. UNRWA welcomes statements of humanitarian pauses and announcements that restrictions on bringing humanitarian aid to #Gaza might be eased.

We hope that UNRWA will finally be allowed to bring in thousands of trucks loaded with food, medicine and hygiene supplies. They are currently in Jordan and Egypt waiting for the green light.

Opening all the crossings and flooding Gaza with assistance is the only way to avert further deepening of starvation among the people of Gaza. What’s needed is at least 500/600 trucks of basics every day.

According to our latest data 1 in every 5 children is malnourished in Gaza City. More children have reportedly died of hunger; bringing the death toll of starving people to over 100.

Our teams are ready: UNRWA has over 10,000 staff in Gaza. When aid gets in, they will give it directly and with dignity and safety to the communities we serve. We have the reach, network, know-how and trust of those communities.

Meanwhile, we call once again, for a long-term ceasefire as part of an agreement that would bring respite to starving people, an uninterrupted flow of basic supplies as well as the release of all hostages.

“Why use airdrops when you can drive hundreds of trucks through the borders?,” UNRWA@JulietteTouma tells @nytimes.  “It’s much easier, more effective, faster, cheaper.” 

Airdrops will not reverse the deepening starvation in #Gaza.

Thirty-six years ago, in March 1976, Israeli authorities announced that 5,500 acres of Palestinian-owned land would be confiscated from villages in the Galilee. The land was expropriated for ‘security and settlement purposes’, and declared a closed military zone. The decision to confiscate the land was followed by curfews on surrounding Palestinian villages, effective from 5 pm, March 29. Local Palestinian leaders responded by calling for general strikes and protests against the confiscation of the land, to be held the following day, March 30, 1976. This is the day that has been commemorated ever since, as Youm al-Ard; Land Day.

The events of the day were unprecedented. This was the first time, since 1948, that Palestinians, in what was now called Israel, stood together and collectively confronted Israeli authorities. The Israeli government declared all demonstrations illegal and yet, general strikes and peaceful marches took place throughout Palestinian towns in Israel, from the Galilee in the North to the Negev in the South. More than 400,000 people participated in the strikes. Simultaneously, solidarity strikes were held in the West Bank, the Gaza Strip and in refugee camps in Lebanon. The Israeli response was militant and violent, aimed at subduing any signs of nationalism and resistance, as Israeli troops, backed by tanks, entered Palestinian villages and reoccupied them. The clashes resulted in the death of six unarmed Palestinians, three men and three women. Four were shot dead by the Israeli military, two others by the Israeli police. About 100 Palestinians were wounded and a further 300 were arrested.

Now, after decade upon decade of struggling and facing life under occupation, March 30 is still a date commemorating the day Palestinians took a collective stand against Israeli attempts to steal their land. Land Day is marked as a day of remembrance for those who were killed, and a day of protests against Israel’s ongoing policy of land expropriation from the Palestinians.

Israel’s expansionist policies and theft of Palestinian land did not end that day, 36 years ago. The thousands of acres of land that were confiscated and declared military zones were later utilized for massive illegal settlement expansion. Today Palestinian land is continuously being eaten up by Israel, with the separation wall, buffer zones, settlements and bypass roads expanding and removing the Palestinians from what means the most to them – their land. Almost everything in the conflict that has lasted for over half a century is related to the land; Palestinians forced from their homes, unable to return, their houses demolished, fields of olive trees being destroyed by settlers, checkpoints and roadblocks keeping families apart and above all, the Israeli occupation of Palestine.

But Land Day is so much more than a day portraying Palestinians as victims of Israel’s colonialist policies. It is about Palestinians everywhere standing up against the expropriation of their land. Land Day is marked in Palestine and throughout the world, by Palestinians and those who stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people. It is a time to remember and protest the injustice against and systematic oppression of the Palestinian people. Commemorating the events of March 30, 1976 is not only about everything the Palestinians have lost, but also about the Palestinian people standing together against those who have taken it away.
