Update: Alarming Escalation of Israeli Soldiers’ Looting during Raids in the West Bank

Balasan is the name in Arabic for a native tree that has existed in Palestine for thousands of years, which leaves were used to extract a healing balm to cure wounds and illnesses. The name is inspired by the vision that the respect for human rights and justice are a cure needed to end violations and suffering, and restore the humanity and dignity of all people.

Update: Alarming Escalation of Israeli Soldiers’ Looting during Raids in the West Bank

Since 7 October 2023, as Israel escalated its militarization of the occupied West Bank, a disturbing and largely under-reported pattern has emerged: Israeli soldiers, under the cover of military raids and operations, have been systematically looting Palestinian homes, shops, and personal property. Beyond the violence of forced entry and arbitrary arrest, soldiers have stolen cash, gold, vehicles, and other valuables; often targeting families already reeling from destruction and displacement. The frequency and recurrence of such incidents reflect systemic practice occurring alongside the violent and intrusive raids themselves.

Reports from communities across the West Bank indicate that looting has become a routine part of Israeli military raids. For instance, in Kafr Malik, during the Muslim holiday of “Eid al-Adha” in July 2025, soldiers confiscated approximately 500,000 shekels in cash and jewelry from homes, along with several vehicles [1]. In the same month, in Ya’bad, residents reported over 100 families were robbed in a single day as soldiers moved from house to house, taking valuables and damaging property. Victims recount soldiers emptying safes, seizing IDs, and leaving families without vital documents or resources [2].

Since the Israeli army does not hold a unit’s actions accountable for the looting that occurs during their raids and operations [3], it labels every West Bank raid as a “counter-terror operation,” and every home is, as such, presumed to be a terrorist site [4]. Thus, justifying the looting of valuables under the notion that the valuables are “terror money” [5].

More recently, on 26 August 2026, the Israeli army raided the city of Ramallah, injuring 58 Palestinians; 14 were shot with rubber-coated steel bullets, and 31 suffered tear gas inhalation [6]. The Israeli police spokesman stated that the army has seized roughly 1.5 million shekels ($447,000) of “terror funds” [7]. This claim was left without any form of evidence, thus granting immunity for any future forced acquisition of money and valuables as “terror-funds.”

Below are testimonies of families from the town of Husan, west of the Bethlehem Governorate, reporting cases of looting that occurred over the past few months:

Testimony 1 – Wife of Detainee –  Resident of Husan (A01):

“We were all celebrating my father’s return from Hajj, when we were raided at 11:00 P.M. There were 20 to 30 soldiers who entered our home and yelled angrily for us not to move or speak. The soldiers then split up their unit and scattered throughout the house, checking every corner of every drawer and cabinet.

They even unfolded our socks and had laid them flat all over the bed, ensuring we didn’t hide our gold necklaces inside our clothing cabinets.

After 3 hours, the soldiers finally left our home, and we then returned to check on our rooms, only to find that all of our gold jewelry and cash were missing. They took all of our loose cash, even the coins!”

Testimony 2 – Wife – Resident of Husan (A02):

“We were not sure why the soldiers parked their armored cars in front of our house, but we knew we were their next target. The soldier collected our IDs and had the entire family seated in the living room. His unit dispersed to our bedroom first, as if they knew exactly what they were looking for.

The unit’s captain had my husband escorted by 6 soldiers who then went to our kitchen, and had my husband reveal the gold we had hidden in our meat freezer. They clearly were experts and knew that [people in our town] hid their gold in freezers and in the garden!

My husband had given me 2,600 shekels that day to spend on things for the family; there was no trace of the cash anymore – it was all gone.”

These illegal looting practices are part of a broader escalation in the West Bank since October 7, 2023, marked by increased settler violence, intensified military raids, and sweeping movement restrictions. According to UN OCHA, 2024 alone saw over 1,400 incidents of settler violence, many of which coincided with or followed military raids, creating conditions in which looting and destruction of property became normalized [8]. Looting serves both as an economic blow and as a tool of coercion, deepening the already volatile living conditions for Palestinians and pushing more families toward displacement.

The material losses are devastating for affected families, many of whom rely on seasonal incomes or small-scale local businesses to survive. One resident of Kafr Malik described the raid on his home: “They emptied our safe, took our car, even our IDs, and no one will hold them accountable” [9]. Such crimes are rarely investigated by Israeli authorities, reinforcing a climate of impunity that encourages further violations.

These instances of looting serve a larger policy of economic disintegration and territorial control... READ MORE  https://balasan.org/update-alarming-escalation-of-israeli-soldiers-looting-during-raids-in-the-west-bank/

Born in 1947, Mansour spent his childhood around the verdant hills and fields of Birzeit — where he was born — and later his adolescence in Bethlehem and Jerusalem. These experiences left a significant mark on his work, heightening a sense of gradual loss in Palestine, especially after the occupation of the West Bank and Jerusalem in 1967. His early experiences also presented him with the symbols and images he would later use to preserve and highlight Palestinian identity. https://slimanmansour.com/about-the-artist-sliman-mansour/

Israel, armed with American made weaponry and political support, invests in religious extremism and sets up families to be canon fodder for religious wars.... Israel claims to be Jewish, but what it really is is a cruel war machine that has been aggressively grabbing land, rights, and peace from the people of historic Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, and Jordan.

Recent cartoon in my local newspaper

Dear America,

Jewish is not Israel, despite the newest investment ETF on the New York Stock Exchange claiming to be defending Jewish people: Jewish is an ancient religion, and a precious heritage and identity for many individuals worldwide, whereas Israel is a 76 year old political entity that is in long term & flagrant violation of international law.

Israel, armed with American made weaponry and political support, invests in religious extremism and sets up families to be canon fodder for religious wars.  America should not be investing in or supporting that: America should be investing in the rule of fair & just laws and democratic ideals with equal rights, freedom, & respect for all people, regardless of supposed race or religion, here and there.

Israel claims to be Jewish, but what it really is is a cruel war machine that has been aggressively grabbing land, rights, and peace from the people of historic Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, and Jordan.

There are many good and decent people, true to American ideals, who happen to be Jewish.  They invest in America and real democracy- not Israel.  There are also many good and decent people living in historic Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, and Jordan who are worthy of our concern and respect.

Sincerely,

Anne Selden Annab

This Week in Palestine December 2024: The War of the Narratives by Sani P. Meo

"... TWiP was initially intended to be a guide for tourists and pilgrims, offering them information on where to go and what to do while visiting the Holy Land. That was back in late 1998 and 1999. By the year 2000, TWiP had started to emerge as a voice for Palestine, promoting it in the best way possible, advocating for its rights and cause, and bringing out the best in Palestine.

The history of This Week in Palestine was published in an article in the June 2022 issue themed “Palestinian Archives” – in my opinion, one of the most powerful editions. The article, “TWiP: An Inadvertent Archive,” offers an in-depth exploration of the wonderful journey of This Week in Palestine that has included every single human emotion one can imagine.

However harsh this year has been on the Palestinian people, it has also been an excellent one for This Week in Palestine, at least from the standpoint of popularity and credibility. During the past year there has been a surge of around 350 percent in TWiP’s readership, which is understandable because of the grace of Gaza and the fact that people around the world want to know more about Palestine. Thanks to the young generation who by using social media have brought the question of Palestine to the international stage. It’s worth noting that this keen interest in Palestine, translated through millions of pro-Palestine posts on various social platforms, has come with a price. It has irked mainstream media and sent it on a frantic journey to debunk the Palestinian narrative. As TWiP turns 26, the war between the Palestinian narrative or story and that of the Zionists is reaching a peak.

In her article “Working with the British Media on Gaza,” published in the May 2024 issue of TWiP, Leila Sansour lists a few tactics that the Western political establishments use against the Palestinian narrative: “…from the willful choice of always starting history on October 7 and disregarding all the voices that have painstakingly pointed out the flaws in this approach, to denying Palestinians the right to comment on just about anything that concerns their plight.”..... Don't give Israel the power to destroy the United Nations, the International Court of Justice, International Law, The Universal Declaration of Human Rights... and America.

 Dear Elected Leaders,

80 years since D-Day marking the turning point in WWII.

80 years ago American heroes working with Allied heroes risked their lives to help end a monstrous regime.

Many died when America stepped up and helped save the world from the cruel and murderous Nazi regime that was convincing decent people to endorse racist attitudes and war mongering ways.

America was respected then.  Sadly not so much anymore.

Modern times are revealing a very different form of threat- an enemy within America subverting our Fourth Estate and actively corrupting our politicians: Zionist propaganda, bribes, bully tactics, and manipulative interference from a very foreign country are aggressively undermining our ideals, our security, and the future of our democracy.

This modern international threat to our freedom has been flying under the radar since before WWI & WWII.  Jews are not to blame for it, but the so-called "Jewish State" is as heavily armed ideologues advocating segregation and apartheid policies intentionally impoverish and displace the native non-Jewish men, women and children of historic Palestine.

Do you honestly believe that Israel will stop its war mongering ways once every Palestinian is either dead or silenced and 1.) pushed off their ancestral lands & 2.) bombed in their refugee camps... and every pro-Palestine supporter is harassed, doxed, and denied good jobs.

Please STOP fortifying racist Israel's apartheid laws, walls, and war mongering ways.

Don't give Israel the power to destroy the United Nations, the International Court of Justice, International Law, The Universal Declaration of Human Rights... and America.

No more weapons for Zionist war mongers and Israeli disinformation campaigns.

Full respect for basic human rights and the rule of fair and just laws is the best way forward, both here and there.

Sincerely,

Anne Selden Annab

There are enough weapons of war and destruction already on planet earth.

Please stop aiding and abetting Israeli insanity. Full Stop.

Where, after all, do universal human rights begin?

The UN Mediator for Palestine, Count Folke Bernadotte, believed that the Palestinians displaced had a right to return to their homes and wrote several UN reports to that effect.

"It would be an offence against the principles of elemental justice if these innocent victims of the conflict were denied the right to return to their homes while Jewish immigrants flow into Palestine, and, indeed, at least offer the threat of permanent replacement of the Arab refugees who have been rooted in the land for centuries."

Bernadotte was assassinated on Friday 17 September 1948 by members of the group Lehi, a Zionist terrorist organization, commonly known in the West as the Stern Gang

Coincidentally, Muslims also engage in fasting during the sacred month of Ramadan. Amidst these hallowed moments, we unveil the recipe for Nablus Tamreyeh – a delectable confection void of animal derivatives, bearing the mantle of veganism, exuding lightness, vitality, and an unmistakable Palestinian essence.

In the vibrant tapestry of Palestine, Christians and Muslims intertwine as friends –each Christian cherishing a Muslim companion, and every Muslim embracing a Christian confidant. Amidst the shared bonds of neighbors, colleagues, and acquaintances, let the aroma of this delectable dessert unite hearts. Whether gifted to your Christian companion or your Muslim confidant, delve into its sweetness and watch prayers bloom during these sanctified moments.

Ingredients

For the dough:

– ¾ c flour

– ¼ c water (more or less as needed)

– a pinch of salt

For the filling:

– ½ c coarse semolina

– ½ c sugar

– 2 c water

– powdered sugar as needed (for decoration)

Preparation

For the dough:

– Place the flour and salt in an electric mixer bowl, gradually pour in the water while continuously kneading to obtain a soft, nonsticky dough. You can use your hands in the absence of an electric mixer.

– Continue kneading for five minutes using the mixer or ten minutes by hand.

– Divide the dough into eight equal portions.

– Place the dough portions in a lightly oiled bowl.

– Cover the bowl and set it aside to rest for one hour.

For the filling:

– In a pot over medium heat, stir together the sugar, water, and semolina until boiling.

– Continue gently stirring the mixture until it thickens.

– Pour the mixture into a rectangular tray, let it cool, then cover it with plastic wrap and refrigerate briefly (not more than half an hour), until it becomes firm.

– Remove the filling from the refrigerator, and cut it into eight equal pieces.

– On a flat surface lightly greased with oil, roll out each dough portion separately into the thinnest  possible square.

– Place a piece of filling in the center of each dough portion.

– Take a corner of the dough and place it over the filling.

– Repeat folding the dough with the remaining corners until all edges of the dough are closed over the filling, forming a square. (Do not stretch the dough too much over the filling.)

– Press lightly and roll the square with the palm of your hand to make it slightly thinner.

– Repeat with the remaining dough portions.

– In a pot, heat enough oil.

– Place the dough pieces in the hot oil and fry them until they are golden and crispy.

– Remove the pastries from the oil and drain them on paper towels.

Sprinkle the pastries with powdered sugar and serve immediately, while hot.

Words to Honor- Universal Declaration of Human Rights

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) is a milestone document in the history of human rights. Drafted by representatives with different legal and cultural backgrounds from all regions of the world, the Declaration was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in Paris on 10 December 1948 (General Assembly resolution 217 A) as a common standard of achievements for all peoples and all nations. It sets out, for the first time, fundamental human rights to be universally protected and it has been translated into over 500 languages. The UDHR is widely recognized as having inspired, and paved the way for, the adoption of more than seventy human rights treaties, applied today on a permanent basis at global and regional levels (all containing references to it in their preambles).

When 700,000 Palestinians fled from or were thrown out of their homes during the Nakba in 1948, they took their house keys with them, convinced that they would come back after a week or two and re-open their front doors. The keys have been passed on from generation to generation as a reminder of their lost homes and as lasting symbols of their ‘right of return’. The Palestinian right of return or compensation was internationally recognized by the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 194, adopted on 11 December 1948.

My letter to LRB RE: Nathan Thrall's "The End of the Abbas Era"

"The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which was adopted by the UN General Assembly on 10 December 1948, was the result of the experience of the Second World War. With the end of that war, and the creation of the United Nations, the international community vowed never again to allow atrocities like those of that conflict happen again..." READ MORE

Dear Sir,

October 20th, 2015 United Nations Human Rights Council announces that the President of Palestine, Mr Mahmoud Abbas, will be addressing a special meeting of the United Nations Human Rights Council on October 28, 2015 http://www.ohchr.org/EN/NewsEvents/Pages/DisplayNews.aspx?NewsID=16621&LangID=E

The same day, October 20th, 2015, London Review of Books blog publishes Nathan Thrall's "The End of the Abbas Era" where Thrall deftly builds a detailed case to dismiss Palestine's Abbas... Thrall dwells on what he calls Abbas's failures, but Thrall fails to notice sovereign Israel's total failure to respect international law and the Palestinians' basic human rights, and the longest running refugee crisis in the world today: Israel clearly wants the land, but not the native non-Jewish people of that land. Israel determines citizen rights and freedoms by religion, and invests tax payers' money in subsidizing Jewish religious "scholars", Jewish settlers in the illegally occupied territories, and Jewish-only "neighborhoods", as well as "security measures" which usurp Palestinian land and resources.

What kind of world do you want to build from this day forward? One where religion and/or race determine who is free and able to find a good job and which schools, neighborhoods, and infrastructures get funds and support?

Or one where Golden Rule thinking empowers public and private support for respecting basic human rights and the rule of fair and just laws.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, as well as Palestine's political survival is really what is at stake today- not Abbas.

The Palestinian refugee crisis created by Israel more than 60 years ago, and exasperated every day since as Jews-preferred Israel continues to push Palestinian men, women and children into poverty, despair and forced exile is a cruel situation that only gets worse as the Israel-Palestine conflict grinds on and on with endless negative ramifications.

Ending the Israel-Palestine conflict with two fully sovereign and fully secular states based on full respect for international law and human rights- and golden rule thinking- is the right thing to do.

Entertaining readers with distractions, and demonizing Palestinians individually or collectively, might help steer some away from noticing the big picture, but we need to see the big picture- for everyone's sake.

Sincerely,
Anne Selden Annab
