As US airstrikes hit port and inland cities in Iran, and Tehran strikes at the US’s Middle East allies, the escalating conflict has left many Iranians fearing that, amid war and a worsening human rights crisis, they remain trapped in a cycle of violence and repression with no way out.

Bandar Abbas, on the strait of Hormuz and the headquarters of the Iranian navy, has been hit by strikes every night since the latest escalation began nearly two weeks ago. Soroush*, a writer based in the city who secretly publishes a newsletter documenting human rights violations in Iran, described a “new normal” for its residents.

“We need to accept this could just be our new reality now and it’s worked because we are less afraid as each day goes on,” the 37-year-old said. “We are less afraid of the future because we are now forced to accept this is the new normal. There’s no one coming to save us from the bombs or the regime’s bullets. Our brains have tricked us into making peace with this new reality.”

For those living near the port, loud explosions followed by prolonged power cuts have become the norm over the past week.

Mehnaz*, 39, depends on the internet for her work and says she was already struggling with the government-imposed internet shutdown, which has severely affected her earnings.

“We always had power cuts, but the hours have now extended and I fear I can’t rely on my online work any more. The war is far from the end and daily life is becoming harder under the bombs, power cuts and internet shutdowns. It’s truly hell here,” she said.

Remember the Satanic Verses controversy? Remember “Je suis Charlie”? Remember the constant invocations of Voltaire and Orwell? The great irony of our age is that many of the cadre of politicians who spent years anointing themselves as champions of free speech have become its most enthusiastic enemies when the subject turns to one issue: Palestine.

For decades, western governments lectured the world about liberal values. They declared freedom of expression the hallmark of a liberal democratic society. Protest was deemed patriotic while the right to offend was considered sacred. Then came Gaza. Suddenly, the principles that we were once told were non-negotiable became highly negotiable indeed...

.... The actions are opaque, the message unmistakable: there are political causes the British establishment welcomes but also political causes it very much fears.

This isn’t even about Uygur or Piker’s views. Whether one agrees with everything either man has ever said is irrelevant. Piker, for example, referred to some Orthodox Jews as “inbred” and once said the US “deserved” 9/11, both offensive comments for which he has since expressed regret. Defending free speech is most crucial when that speech is controversial. You cannot show your support for free expression only by defending opinions you already share.

In the US, where I now live and vote, the situation is even more alarming.

As a former Social Studies teacher who taught a 30-day unit on the Holocaust, I had the good fortune to have had several Holocaust survivors and numerous college professors speak to my classes over the years.

As we discussed how Germany, a country with a constitution, an elected government, and a system of law was taken over by an ego-maniac (Hitler, and the Nazis), the lyrics of the song from the musical South Pacific, a”You’ve Got to be Carefully Taught," were offered as one of the explanations.

When asked by the students if there weren’t any “good Germans” who stood up to the Nazis, the poem “First They Came” by Pastor Martin Niemöller was introduced.

Dear America,

Modern war is assisted by drones, satellites, fighter jets, bombs, and sophisticated computer technology as We The People everywhere are pushed and bribed into doing all things online, including getting advice from AI.  Meanwhile our online news can be easily re-written in a blink by sycophants who care more about power and/or money than the truth- and true democracy.

Today's America led by Trump partners up with an Israel that claims to be Jewish; an Israel that funds Jewish "religious scholars" and Jewish-only housing projects in the illegally occupied territories; an Israel that wants the land but not the native non-Jewish people of that land; an Israel that is armed with American money and weaponry; an Israel that attacks its neighbors over and over; an Israel that bulldozes homes and then bombs refugee camps; an Israel that used the United Nations to gain sovereign power in 1948 but has been flagrantly violating international laws, borders, and basic human rights all along.

Israel wants war in order to grab more land and resources- including more American taxpayers' money.  Are we the tail or the dog that wags the tail?

No one can know how this militant mess of state sponsored terrorism will play out, how history and hindsight will see the choices being made today, but one thing I do know is that this 2026 war on Iran is not self-defense for U.S. or for Israel.  

Recently, in the illegally occupied West Bank, Israel's IDF installed a new iron gate at the entrance of the Palestinian village of Silwad, the only access point for several nearby villages, including the Palestinian Christian village of Taybeh.  Israel also closed all gates and stopped aid from entering the besieged and crucified Gaza.

War and terrorism are for tyrants, not for freedom or justice.  Bully tactics teach all the wrong lessons.

The United Nations is for peace & security.  Our country should be investing money & positive energy into the United Nations-investing  in full respect for human rights, heritage, education, AND freedom of and from religion.   We should be investing in dialogue and investing in accountability, true justice, and an end to all violence.

We should not be investing in Israel, or trusting their intelligence.

I remember the Persian Gulf War 1990-1991.

I remember the horrors of 9/11, the September 11th 2001 attacks on America by al-Qaeda terrorists.... and then the subsequent Afghanistan War 2001-2021.

I remember the Iraq War 2003-2011.

And I remember all the hype in the early 2010s about "The Arab Spring" with anti-government protests, uprisings, and armed rebellions in the Arab countries.   How did all that play out... less freedom, more rage and suffering for everyone, more anti-American angst and the only ones to benefit were religious zealots and tyrants throughout the entire region, especially Israel.

Military-industrial complexes- weapons manufacturing and sales have been flourishing, polluting the earth, and impoverishing far-away families and communities.

The rule of fair and just laws and polices has not flourished. AND American freedom & American families have not flourished either.  But bigotry and hate has flourished, nourished by all the worst...  This latest war is yet another lose-lose for everyone- except Israel.

They never learn. Once again, a bellicose US president has unleashed overwhelming military firepower to force a sovereign nation to its knees. Once again, blatant lies and exaggerated claims are being propagated to justify the attack. Duplicitous American diplomacy became a fig leaf for premeditated aggression. The cautionary advice of allies was spurned. The UN, international law and public opinion were ignored. Democratic consent is lacking. And once again, there are few defined goals by which to gauge success, and no long-term plan.

Now, as in the past, the predictable result of today’s renewed, expanded and apparently open-ended US-Israeli aggression against Iran will be instant, spreading chaos. Civilians will be killed, children orphaned, families torn apart. Regional turmoil and international oil-price panic will follow the Iranian retaliation that has already begun, and which may be backed by Tehran’s Hezbollah and Houthi allies. New hatreds will be seeded, terrorist vendettas sown. The west’s foes will rejoice. And nothing of enduring value will be achieved. That was the bitter outcome of the failed US-led interventions in Afghanistan and Iraq. Today, it’s Tehran’s turn to reap the whirlwind.

How dismaying – how unforgivable! – that those past lessons have not been learned. How incredible that an elected 21st-century American president still believes it’s effective and permissible, let alone moral, to dictate to the world from the barrel of a gun. By what conceivable right does the US behave in this way?

While there are certain differences, the similarities between Donald Trump’s siege of Iran and George W Bush’s disastrous 2003 invasion of Iraq are striking. Both crises fit a wider pattern of unsuccessful, costly US interventionism dating back to Vietnam – and the 1953 CIA-led Iran coup. Trump promised to avoid foreign adventures. Surprise! He lied. Anyone who believes he has radically changed the way the US engages with the world should review this sordid saga of post-1945 imperial hubris. In this, he’s no different from his predecessors...
