Israel is moving ahead with plans to apply a legal device that would enable it to seize of up to forty percent of Arab private property in annexed East Jerusalem, the area Palestinians envision as their future capital.

The legal preparations to advantage Jewish settlers at the expense of Palestinians, combined with announcement of plans to build more than 3,100 units for settlers in East Jerusalem and the West Bank, are enflaming tensions even as substantive peace talks resumed in Jerusalem for the first time in five years. 

Haaretz reported that Israeli Attorney-General Yehuda Weinstein has now decided on criteria for barring West Bank Palestinians from maintaining their properties in Jerusalem.

One of these criteria, according to Haaretz, is the proximity of the Palestinian property to Jewish settler housing, raising Palestinian fears that the move could pave the way for significant transfers of Palestinian properties to settlers.

“This is another very dangerous, provocative move to consolidate Israel’s hold in East Jerusalem,” said the PLO spokeswoman Hanan Ashrawi. “East Jerusalem is occupied territory and Israel has no business annexing it or applying this property law.”... READ MORE

Surprising as it may sound, William Hague is turning out to be the most vocally pro-Palestinian British foreign secretary of recent times. Speaking in Washington this week before a dinner for Hillary Clinton, Hague warned that as a result of Israeli West Bank settlement growth the two-state solution was “in danger of slipping away”.

There’s nothing new about such claims. In ‘ The End of the Peace Process’, the great Palestinian author Edward Said said his people’s dreams of statehood were being buried under a ton of Israeli settlement tarmac – in 1998. But as such prophecies become more common, there's a danger they will become self-fulfilling, causing more and more people to give up on peace altogether.

So we need to say it loud and clear: the two-state solution isn’t dead. In fact, a deal to end the Israel-Palestine struggle is within reach – if only the two sides can will themselves to grasp it.

The cause of the Palestinians has never been more "marginalised" than it is today, according to a warning by their internationally respected Prime Minister Salam Fayyad.

Citing the international focus on the Arab spring, the eurozone crisis and the US electoral cycle, Mr Fayyad yesterday said that Palestinian leaders were facing a “path of growing untenability” while the world largely focused its attention elsewhere.

In an interview with The Independent, the Palestinian Prime Minister was strongly critical of the West’s failure to tackle Israel more “seriously” over its violations of international law and its obligations under the nine year old Road Map.

He declared that this “marginalisation” was now the “biggest obstacle” to progress towards a Palestinian state. “Our cause has never been this marginalized,” he said. “Ever. This is our greatest challenge.”

And he warned that the Palestinian Authority itself was being undermined because of factors ranging from its acute financial crisis to a potential loss of faith by Palestinians that it would able to end to an occupation that is “entrenching itself by the day.”...READ MORE
