As a child, I watched my mother precisely, yet effortlessly line her beautiful almond-shaped brown eyes in the mornings. The earthy colors of her make-up palette and the color-tone of the room were comforting in their familiarity. The various shades of green and beige on the bedcovers, the hints of red and orange on the book covers by her bed and sometimes in the clothes she meticulously hangs the night before. The beautiful wood closet doors and brass-colored hardware from the 1960s still feel timeless and homey.

The cream-brown instant coffee that was always placed within the perfect reach of her right hand, would always be followed by the much darker umber of Arabic coffee; the scent adding to the palette of the senses. She always looked focused yet graceful in her application. One line or two, then she checks each eye in the mirror before purposefully moving on to the next step in her routine. The yellow in the palette always came from her notepad that she kept to the side of her dresser, where she wrote down thoughts for a speech she had to give that day or notes for a paper she was working on (or both).  I was later told by my father that that is Mama’s space when she takes time for herself to get her thoughts together for the day.

The phone rings almost constantly, then as now; calls from fellow activists and colleagues discussing strategy, from the press requesting a statement or an interview, or from family or friends wanting to stop by or to discuss plans for family lunch on Sunday. The news, in both Arabic and English, is always on interchangeably, and sometimes simultaneously!

Dear Sir,

Donald Trump’s Jerusalem statement is only arson because so many journalists, pundits, religious extremists, hate mongers on all sides...etc... provide the kindling, the match, pour on the gasoline and enthusiastically fan the flames of the fire.

Why not calmly call for every one, no matter who they are or where they live, to peacefully, compassionately, and quite reasonably insist that Trump also recognize East Jerusalem as Palestine's capital.

And why not remind Trump of America's cherished ideal of freedom of (and from) religion: Religion should be a private personal matter, not a state funded project. 

Why not peacefully, compassionately, and quite reasonably point out how sovereign Israel has been consistently violating the basic human rights of the native non-Jewish population of the Holy Land?

Trump wound up his speech announcing "God Bless Israel" but Trump is not God (if there is a God) and (if there is a God) no human being, rich or poor, has the power to determine who or what God will bless.  We can guess, and we can learn from history, and we can live by the Golden Rule by treating others the way we want to be treated, but beyond that we can only hope that our choices are good choices.

As an American, firmly believing in our Bill of Rights as well as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, I think a more inclusive and compassionate statement would have been much more appropriate: God bless everyone, regardless of supposed race, religion, or nationality.

The speech entitled, “Framing the Current Issues in Palestine,” discussed the escalation of Israeli violations of international law and Palestinian human rights, and the status of Jerusalem and its Muslim and Christian Palestinian population.

Ashrawi stressed that “without Jerusalem as our capital, there can be no Palestinian state or chances for peace or stability.”

“With its illegal measures of demolishing Palestinian houses, evicting Palestinians from their ancestral homes, revoking Palestinian IDs and constructing settlements and apartheid walls, Israel is transforming Jerusalem into an exclusively Jewish city where Palestinian Christians and Muslims have become temporary residents in their own homeland,” added Ashrawi.

She further discussed the current facts on the ground, future Palestinian political initiatives, including the Palestinian bid at the United Nations, the domestic reconciliation process and future prospects for elections, as well as the tragic situation of the Palestinians and Israel’s most recent campaign of aggression and terror in Gaza.

Ashrawi accepted the 16th Holy Land Christian Ecumenical Foundation (HCEF) 2014 Path of Peace award, which she described as a “humbling and empowering honor.”

A leading Palestinian politician has urged British MPs to vote in favour of recognising a Palestinian state when the issue is debated in Westminster later today.

Dr Hanan Ashrawi, executive committee member of the PLO, told Sky News the Palestinian cause must be "rescued" to prevent jihadists using it to fuel radicalisation and further extremism in the region.

In reference to the growing influence of groups like Islamic State, she said: "The Palestinian question has always been appropriated by others, and I've always said we need to rescue it from being 'up for grabs' by those looking for a cause, or who are trying to borrow our constituency or our legitimacy.

"It is imperative we remove one core issue from the region that has constantly fed… and send a clear message to the whole region and the rest of the world that justice can prevail and that we can make peace."

The debate in the House of Commons has been tabled by MP Grahame Morris, chair of the Labour Friends of Palestine.

"Not only is statehood the inalienable right of the Palestinian people, but recognising Palestine will breathe new life into a peace process that is at an impasse," Mr Morris told Reuters.

The Westminster vote will not be binding on the UK Government and is unlikely to change official policy, which states recognition of a Palestinian state must follow a bilateral negotiated process with Israel.

However, Dr Ashrawi said it was nonetheless "a very significant moment".

She said: "It is the beginning of a process of genuine consideration of the historical responsibility of the British towards Palestine, dating back to 1917, and we believe this process of rectification has to start.

"It is about time … not just as a way of doing justice to Palestine and respecting international law, but as a way of trying to rescue the chances of peace, which are disappearing rapidly."

The PLO Executive Committee Department of Culture and Information said in a press release that a few days ahead of the British parliamentary vote on the recognition of the State of Palestine, Ashrawi met with correspondents from British media outlets in Palestine to reiterate the official call of the PLO for all states to recognize the State of Palestine as a “human, moral, legal, and political imperative.”

Ashrawi said: “We welcome and appreciate the initiative of a group of British parliamentarians to ask their government to recognize the State of Palestine.  If the British parliament vote reflects British public opinion, it will support the motion.  This would be the first clear step taken by the UK as part of the process of historical rectification of the disastrous consequences of the Balfour Declaration and the British Mandate over Palestine that ended in 1948 with the creation of the State of Israel.”

“During the past few weeks we have received many messages from British friends representing political parties, civil society, churches, and others in support of the motion to recognize the State of Palestine.  We call upon all of them to pursue such efforts in order to obtain a victory on October 13 for the universal cause of justice in the British Parliament. Regardless of the non-binding nature of the vote, it will have a significant impact on the British government’s policies and upcoming decisions on Palestine,” added Ashrawi.

STOCKHOLM (Ma'an) -- PLO Executive Committee Member Hanan Ashrawi addressed the Nordic Jerusalem Conference in Sweden on Friday, stressing the importance of Jerusalem for Palestinians.

Jerusalem is a symbol of peace, but it is surrounded by military checkpoints, a separation wall, and settlements, Ashrawi said.

The city is part and parcel of Palestinian history and culture, she added.

Ashrawi also asserted that diversity is a key factor in Palestinian society.

The idea of Palestine consisting of "one religion or one color or one sect ... is impossible because the history and culture of Palestine has always reflected cultural and religious diversity," the PLO official said.

Palestinian Ambassador to Sweden Hala Fariz also addressed the conference, saying Israel was attempting to change the demographic makeup of Jerusalem and the West Bank by demolishing homes and displacing Palestinians in order to build settlements.

Palestinian lawmaker Abdullah Abdullah attended the conference, along with a delegation from the PLO's Department of Expatriates Affairs. Delegations from several European and Arab countries also attended the meeting.

The two-day conference, held May 9 and 10 in the Swedish Parliament building in Stockholm, was organized by the Swedish-Palestinian Parliamentary Commission and the Jerusalem Committee in Sweden.

Israel captured East Jerusalem during the 1967 Six-Day War and later annexed it in a move never recognized by the international community.

It considers all of Jerusalem its "eternal, undivided" capital and does not see construction in the eastern sector as settlement building.

Some 350,000 Jewish settlers live in West Bank settlements, in addition to another 200,000 Israelis settled in occupied and annexed East Jerusalem.

The international community views all settlement building on occupied Palestinian land as illegal.
