How much is your support for Israel worth? Try $1 billion [that we know of]... Israel is spending wads of cash on public diplomacy in a desperate attempt to reverse waning American support for the country after it stands accused of genocide in Gaza and pushing the U.S. into the Iran war.

In the latest episode of Always at War, Courtney and Alex examine Israel's $1 billion campaign to shape global opinion and policy toward Israel with the researcher who's done the work to expose it: QI Fellow Nick Cleveland-Stout.

Quincy Institute researcher Nick Cleveland-Stout has the most comprehensive data yet on the extent of this foreign influence campaign

Israel is spending wads of cash on public diplomacy in a desperate attempt to reverse waning American support for the country after it stands accused of genocide in Gaza and pushing the U.S. into the Iran war.

Since Oct. 7, Israel has spent over a billion dollars on global “hasbara” — television appearances, social media campaigns, chat-bot training, and other efforts to influence how people think about Israel. And this “public diplomacy” budget more than quadrupled in the last year alone.

To understand these efforts to win back American hearts and minds, we welcomed Quincy Institute Research Fellow Nick Cleveland-Stout to the latest episode of Always at War. Nick’s latest research is the most-definitive accounting yet of Israel’s new approach to winning over American’s hearts and minds.

Nick’s findings surface a surprising development in Israel’s influence efforts: while the country used to rely almost exclusively on wealthy, sympathetic advocates tilting the policy process toward Israel’s interest via American lobbying groups like AIPAC, Israel has recently been forced to hire U.S. contractors and firms that have to register as foreign agents under FARA.

While the transition signals Israel’s increasing desperation, it also allows us to see who Israel is hiring and for what. Take for example, Trump’s former campaign manager Brad Parscale, who is currently the proud holder of three of Israel’s largest contracts. His main gig: running a mass texting campaign on behalf of Israel while posing as mysterious “peace” groups like “Allies for Peace.” Or, to take another example, the public diplomacy group Targeted Communications Global, which has spent nearly $10 million to run ads on places like X, the Daily Caller, and Breitbart. It turns out, Israel is more worried about maintaining their right-leaning supporters.

But perhaps the most shocking revelation is just how much time and money Tel Aviv is spending on “training” our chat bots — think Claude, ChatGPT, or Grok. The Israeli government is actually paying for “LLM poisoning” — developing pro-Israel websites that feed information to these chatbots whenever they’re asked about Israel. The apparent goal is that, when you ask about a straightforward incident — like Hind Rajab’s murder by the IDF — the chatbot will feed you a “he-said, she-said” story that features Israel’s justifications for shooting a five-year old, not a straight, factual accounting of events... The U.S. provides Israel more than $63 million in military aid per day... The United States spends more on military aid to Israel than to any other country. Israel receives this extraordinary amount of money even though it is the 22nd wealthiest country in the world.

Aid to Israel in Previous Years

From October 7, 2023 through September 30, 2024, the U.S. gave Israel a total of at least $17.9 billion. This works out to $49,041,095.89 per day.

The Real Costs to US Taxpayers

Like many government policies, this disbursement of U.S. tax money is not because it serves American interests, but instead is the result of special interest lobbying.

While it has become normalized for US Presidents to openly avow that they are Zionists and pledge unconditional support to their Israeli ally, most Americans still remain unaware that Israel has repeatedly attacked and killed their fellow citizens.

During the past four years of Joe Biden’s Presidency, Israel has gotten away with murdering five American citizens, for which there have been no consequences for the US’ special relationship with Tel Aviv. Yet Israel’s attacks against America and its citizens go back much further.

In 1954, Israeli intelligence operatives planted bombs in US, British, and Egyptian civilian areas in Cairo, ranging from shopping malls, and movie theatres to diplomatic targets.

The goal was to frame Communist groups, the Muslim Brotherhood, and other actors to serve Israeli interests, convincing the US and UK to back Israel in taking military action. However, the plot, known as “The Lavon Affair” was thankfully foiled and represented a diplomatic debacle for Tel Aviv.

During the June 1967 war that Israel initiated with its “Operation Focus” surprise attack against Egypt, an American naval vessel called the USS Liberty was deliberately attacked by the Israeli military.

The incident led to the killing of 34 US sailors and the injury of 174 others, miraculously the US-flagged ship did not sink despite Israel having repeatedly assaulted it with torpedoes and even napalm.

Then US President Lyndon B. Johnson covered the event up in order to not embarrass Israel, although the ship’s survivors have campaigned for justice for years and rarely received much media attention. It is alleged that the Israeli intention behind the USS Liberty assault was to create a false-flag attack that justified American intervention in the 1967 war.

On August 28, 1980, Israel almost succeeded in assassinating the US ambassador to Lebanon, John Gunther Dean. Although the American ambassador provided evidence that Israel was behind the attempt on his life, Dean was quickly replaced and the incident swept under the rug.

The official narrative accepted by the US government, despite the material evidence of Israeli involvement, was that the fascist militia group called the Front for the Liberation of Lebanon from Foreigners (FLLF) had been behind it.

Years later, in his book, Rise and Kill First, Israeli investigative journalist, Ronen Bergman, revealed that three Israeli officers – Meir Dagan, Rafael Eitan, and Avigdor Ben-Gal – were responsible for creating the FLLF. Their goal was to pose as an organic anti-Palestinian group of Christian Lebanese extremists.

In the case of the attempted assassination of John Gunther Dean, it was speculated that the reason behind the attack was to replace the American ambassador due to his willingness to speak to the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO). If this was the objective, they succeeded in replacing the ambassador.

On March 16, 2003, a 23-year-old American peace activist named Rachel Corrie was deliberately crushed to death by an Israeli soldier driving a militarised bulldozer in the Rafah area of the Gaza Strip. She had been volunteering with the International Solidarity Movement (ISM) and was attempting to block the Israeli army from destroying Palestinian homes. Her parents are still campaigning for justice.

In 2010, Israeli commandos raided a humanitarian aid convoy in International Waters, violently storming a ship called the Mavi Marmara on May 31. The Israeli soldiers gunned down 10 of the activists on board, who had intended to break the illegal military siege on Gaza and were carrying humanitarian aid, one of those who was murdered was an American citizen.

The Mavi Marmara survivors are still bringing legal challenges in an attempt to hold Tel Aviv accountable.

On May 11, 2022, an Israeli soldier assassinated Palestinian-American journalist, Shireen Abu Akleh, in the Jenin Refugee Camp. The State Department later published a report that contradicted itself and served to whitewash the event. The veteran Al-Jazeera journalist had worked in her role for 25 years and was a household name for Palestinians.

Israeli occupation police forces assaulted mourners at Abu Akleh’s funeral, causing the pallbearers to drop her casket. Israeli police later published a doctored video of that incident to try and blame Palestinians for initiating a clash, which was debunked due to video evidence from multiple angles.

Then-Israeli PM Naftali Bennet initially tried to blame Palestinians for shooting Abu Akleh, using videos widely shared on official Israeli social media pages, which were quickly debunked by Israel’s own top rights group B’Tselem.

There has not been justice for Shireen Abu Akleh’s family, who have been repeatedly let down by an American government that isn’t willing to even force Israel to punish the soldier responsible.

On April 1, 2024, Israel deliberately murdered 7 World Central Kitchen (WCK) aid workers, including an American-Canadian dual citizen. WCK receives financing from the US government-funded USAID program.

Despite the overwhelming evidence that an Israeli drone launched repeated strikes against clearly marked humanitarian aid vehicles, targeting workers who moved from one vehicle to the next, the US took no action to properly punish Israel.

Israel has not only murdered dozens of US citizens, many of them Palestinian-Americans who receive little to no coverage compared to non-Palestinians, but American citizens continue to be harassed, detained, assaulted, and subjected to pogroms in the occupied West Bank.

Despite the overwhelming evidence of Israeli war crimes committed against US citizens, Washington repeatedly turns a blind eye and it is rare that even the individual Israelis responsible will be held partially accountable.

Dear America- Israel and its propagandists claim it is all about self-defense, but Israel is and has been the aggressor and the rule breaker.

Postcard from If Americans Knew

My 12/13/2024 letter to elected leaders

Dear America,

There is something we can do right now TODAY to end the violence and suffering in The Holy Land- STOP ARMING ISRAEL.

Israel freely violates all borders and international law and human rights over and over and over.

Israel and its propagandists claim it is all about self-defense,  but Israel is and has been the aggressor and the rule breaker.

Please do not send Americans in to learn anything about security or police work in Israel, for Israel wants our money but scorns our ideals of real justice, freedom, equality, and democracy.

Do not trust Israel.  Time and time again, for decades now, Israel has cruelly persecuted and impoverished the native non-Jewish men, women and children of historic Palestine.

Please stop funding, fueling and exasperating racist Israel's cruel crimes against humanity.

Sincerely,

Anne Selden Annab

Israel rescues 4 hostages today - headlines world wide celebrate this... meanwhile Palestinian prisoners- hostages of Israel- are being raped: Since the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territory in 1967, more than 800,000 Palestinians [including children] have been detained under Israeli military orders in the occupied Palestinian territory

June 2024: A massive demonstration took place in London to support the Palestinian people and condemn the brutal Israeli massacre in the Al-Nusairat refugee camp.

The Israeli military has now rescued a total of 7, & killed 70 of their own hostages. Their kill-to-rescue ratio stands at 10:1. You can only deem this a success if you share the Israeli government’s view that the destruction of Gaza is worth more than the lives of hostages.

The world's two highest courts have made an implacable enemy of Israel in trying to uphold international law and end Israeli atrocities in Gaza.

Separate announcements last week by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and the International Criminal Court (ICC) should have forced Israel on to the back foot in Gaza.

A panel of judges at the ICJ – sometimes known as the World Court – demanded last Friday that Israel immediately stop its current offensive on Rafah, in southern Gaza.

Instead, Israel responded by intensifying its atrocities.

On Sunday, it bombed a supposedly "safe zone" crowded with refugee families forced to flee from the rest of Gaza, which has been devastated by Israel’s rampage for the past eight months.

The air strike set fire to an area crammed with tents, killing dozens of Palestinians, many of whom burnt alive. A video shows a man holding aloft a baby beheaded by the Israeli blast.

Hundreds more, many of them women and children, suffered serious injuries, including horrifying burns.

Israel has destroyed almost all of the medical facilities that could treat Rafah's wounded, as well as denying entry to basic medical supplies such as painkillers that could ease their torment...
