With U.S. munitions stockpiles under strain, tonight @SecRubio is invoking emergency authority to expedite the sale to Israel of 20,000 munitions worth over $650 million.

 

The sale includes 12,000 BLU-110 1,000lb bombs made by Turkish firm @Repkon_Inc 's US subsidiary. Some of the bombs will be transferred directly *from U.S. stocks* per @StateDeptPM

When Tucker Carlson recently interviewed the US ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, their exchange did more than expose policy differences. 

It revealed something more consequential: not merely an ambassador misrepresenting history, but a vision of Israel’s place in the Middle East, and of Washington’s role in enabling it.

A pattern emerged quickly. When confronted with inconvenient historical facts or legal complexities, Huckabee professed uncertainty. But when repeating familiar Israeli government positions, his confidence was unwavering. Precision disappeared only when it complicated the narrative.

Consider his claim that Christians are “thriving” in the Holy Land. He cited 34,000 Christians in Israel in 1948 and 184,000 today, figures intended to suggest steady growth and protection.

But numbers without context are a distortion. In December 1946, the United Nations estimated that there were approximately 145,000 Christians in Palestine, representing around eight percent of the country’s total population. 

During the 1948 Nakba, Jewish militias expelled or drove out hundreds of thousands of Palestinians, including roughly 90,000 Christians. Only around 39,000 remained in their homes within 1948 borders, the nucleus of today’s Palestinian Christian minority inside Israel.

Jerusalem’s demographic trajectory is equally stark. Christians constituted around 20 percent of the city’s population in 1946. Since then, their numbers have declined significantly; by 2006, they accounted for roughly two percent of the city’s population, according to demographic data published by the Jerusalem Institute for Policy Research.

To describe this as “thriving” obscures the increasingly precarious position of Palestinian Christians within a state that defines itself in explicitly Jewish national terms, and where ultra-nationalist currents have grown more assertive.

Defining moments

The evasiveness extended beyond demography. Huckabee claimed that Britain controlled Palestine at the time of the 1917 Balfour Declaration. It did not. The declaration preceded the mandate system and carried no binding force in international law; it was an imperial pledge, not a legal instrument.

He further implied that Arabs initiated the 1956 Suez War. The record is unequivocal: Israel invaded Egypt in coordination with Britain and France. Former US President Dwight D Eisenhower publicly opposed the invasion and forced their withdrawal, contributing to the resignation of his British counterpart, Anthony Eden.

In 1982, during Israel’s invasion of Lebanon and the bombardment of Beirut, former US President Ronald Reagan deliberately used the word “holocaust” in a call with Israeli leader Menachem Begin, warning that the assault endangered the future of relations between Washington and Tel Aviv.

These are not marginal details. They are defining moments in American foreign policy. Misrepresenting them does not merely obscure history; it reshapes political memory.

If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?

You’ve heard that one before, but here’s a new version of the thought experiment: if a genocide takes place but you prevent foreign journalists from observing it, kill the key witnesses and spend hundreds of millions of dollars on propaganda, then will anyone care?

Israel’s far-right government, and its many allies in the US, are betting the answer to that question is “no”. As I write this, Israel is razing Gaza City to the ground in the latest stage of what many respected international human rights organizations and scholars have called a genocide. There aren’t as many images coming out of Gaza City as there should be because the Israeli military is still not allowing foreign reporters free access to Gaza and has murdered many of the journalists in the ground. In August, Al Jazeera’s team in Gaza City were deliberately targeted by Israel.

Nature abhors a vacuum, but propagandists love it. As Gaza burns and information coming out of the strip is deliberately limited, highly paid marketers and PR people in multinational firms are busy rewriting history in real time. Earlier this month, Drop Site News, which has done essential work on Gaza, reported that an American polling firm called Stagwell Global, founded by Mark Penn, was commissioned by Israel’s ministry of foreign affairs to rehabilitate Israel’s global image. Penn, for the uninitiated, is a pollster who facilitated Bill Clinton’s re-election in 1996 and then helped Hillary Clinton lose to Barack Obama in the 2008 primaries with a combination of hubris and racist stereotyping. “The right knows Obama is unelectable except perhaps against Attila the Hun,” Penn wrote in a Clinton campaign memo. He also proposed characterizing Obama as un-American. (Stagwell told Adweek the work in Israel was run by a “small team” and that its agencies work “across the political and issue spectrum”. Last week, a spokesperson told PRWeek the work was a “defined project with a specific brief” that had now concluded.)

In January, Justin Chang wrote that No Other Land "brings us into Masafer Yatta, a community of Palestinian villages in the Israeli-occupied southern West Bank, which is being bulldozed by the Israeli military to make room for a tank training ground." He also said the film, made by a team of Palestinian and Israeli filmmakers, was "the most powerful nonfiction film [he] saw in 2024." Then, as now, it lacked U.S. distribution; as of mid-February, the filmmakers were self-distributing to a few movie theaters. The filmmakers spoke powerfully from the Oscar stage about not only the destruction depicted in the film, but also their frustration with U.S. foreign policy. It is now almost certainly the most decorated film of last year not to be widely available in the United States.

A joint Israeli-Palestinian team which made a film chronicling the eviction of Palestinians from their homes in the occupied West Bank delivered a passionate speech calling out injustices faced by Palestinians on Sunday night after they won the Oscar for best documentary.

“No Other Land” tells the story of the continued demolition by Israeli authorities of Masafer Yatta, a collection of villages in the Hebron mountains of the West Bank where Basel Adra, one of the directors, lives with his family.

The documentary follows the Israeli government’s attempt to evict the villagers by force, having claimed the land for a military training facility and firing range in 1981. Viewers see the local playground being torn down, the killing of Adra’s brother by Israeli soldiers, and other attacks by Jewish settlers while the community tries to survive... The filmmakers behind ‘No Other Land,’ which won the Oscar for best documentary, called for a different path forward to resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, in their acceptance speech Sunday.

“There is a different path, a political solution without ethnic supremacy, with national rights for both of our people,” said Israeli filmmaker Yuval Abraham, in his acceptance speech.

“And I have to say, as I am here, the foreign policy in this country is helping to block this path,” Abraham continued, knocking President Trump’s approach to foreign policy.

The film is a collaboration between Israelis and Palestinians, and it follows activist Basel Adra as he documents the destruction of his hometown at the southern edge of the West Bank, which Israeli soldiers are tearing down to use as a military training zone, according to The Associated Press. Adra then befriends a Jewish Israeli journalist to help tell his story.

“We made this film, Palestinians and Israelis, because together, our voices are stronger. We see each other, the atrocious destruction of Gaza and its people, which must end, the Israeli hostages brutally taken in the crime of October 7, which must be freed,” Abraham said on stage.

“When I look at Basel, I see my brother, but we are unequal,” he continued. “We live in a regime where I am free under civilian law, and Basel is under military laws that destroy his life, and he cannot control.” .... No Other Land premiered at the Berlin film festival last year where it won the Berlinale documentary award. The film was made between 2019 and 2023 and focuses on the steady forced displacement of Palestinians from their homes in Masafer Yatta, a region in the occupied West Bank targeted by Israeli forces.

Speaking to a standing ovation, the film-makers thanked the Academy before co-director Basel Adra said he had recently become a father and hoped his daughter’s life would not be like his – “always fearing certain violence, home demolitions and forced displacement”.

He continued by saying his film reflected “the harsh reality” that his fellow Palestinians had endured for many years, “as we call on the world to take serious action to stop the injustice and stop the ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people”.

Co-director Yuval Abraham then took to the stage to say that Palestinians and Israelis had made the film together “because together our voices are stronger. We see each other the atrocious destruction of Gaza and its people must end.

When Israel escalated its military operations against Gaza in October, Rahaf Othman was so distraught, she said, she “couldn’t think straight.” The 45-year-old Palestinian American, who teaches social studies at Harold L. Richards High School in Oak Lawn, Ill., recalled that she “started getting nightmares from my own experiences when I was in Palestine. I was functional at work, but barely functional. My brain was mush. I was getting traumatized every time I turned on my phone.”

“For the first month, people were asking me what we should do, but I couldn’t think, couldn’t focus.” While in this state, she said she discovered that she could lean on some of her colleagues. “Educators rallied together and created this group, Educators for Palestine. I am grateful they brought me along for the ride.”

Othman is a member of the Illinois Education Association (IEA) Local 218, which covers an area to the south of Chicago, part of the 3 million–strong National Education Association (NEA), the largest labor union in the United States. She is now part of a member effort to press the NEA to put real muscle behind supporting a cease-fire, one prong in a small-but-growing campaign within the US labor movement.

But the rank-and-file campaign goes beyond demanding an end to Israel’s military operations, which have killed at least 22,000 Palestinians, 12,000 of them children. Othman and other members want the NEA to revoke its endorsement of Joe Biden for the 2024 presidential race until the president secures a “permanent cease-fire,” stops “sending military funding, equipment, and intelligence to Israel,” and commits “to a fair due process for asylum-seekers and refugees.”... US Foreign Policy Is a Scam Built on Corruption

The $1.5 trillion in military outlays each year is the scam that keeps on giving—to the military-industrial complex and the Washington insiders—even as it impoverishes and endangers America and the world.

On the surface, US foreign policy seems to be utterly irrational. The US gets into one disastrous war after another -- Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Libya, Ukraine, and Gaza. In recent days, the US stands globally isolated in its support of Israel’s genocidal actions against the Palestinians, voting against a UN General Assembly resolution for a Gaza ceasefire backed by 153 countries with 89% of the world population, and opposed by just the US and 9 small countries with less than 1% of the world population. 

In the past 20 years, every major US foreign policy objective has failed. The Taliban returned to power after 20 years of US occupation of Afghanistan. Post-Saddam Iraq became dependent on Iran. Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad stayed in power despite a CIA effort to overthrow him. Libya fell into a protracted civil war after a US-led NATO mission overthrew Muammar Gaddafi. Ukraine was bludgeoned on the battlefield by Russia in 2023 after the US secretly scuttled a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine in 2022.

To understand the foreign-policy scam, think of today’s federal government as a multi-division racket controlled by the highest bidders.
