The Al Jazeera reporter Anas al-Sharif was the most prominent name among so many targeted for simply bearing witness to the truth

In January this year, Anas al-Sharif was filmed being lifted into the air after taking off his helmet and flak jacket to celebrate a ceasefire that would prove all too temporary in Gaza. This summer, the Palestinian journalist broke down while reporting on starvation in his home town that is now a war zone. A bystander told him: “Persist, Anas, you are our voice”.

But al-Sharif’s popularity in Gaza made him a target. In July, international agencies warned of the danger he was in as the Israel Defense Forces stepped up online attacks, falsely labelling him a Hamas terrorist. His employer, Al Jazeera, insisted he restrict his reporting to the more protected al-Shifa hospital after his father and many colleagues were killed. In August, a few months short of his 29th birthday, al-Sharif and six others were killed in a direct attack on a media tent next to the hospital. In a posthumous post he said: “If these words reach you, know that Israel has succeeded in killing me and silencing my voice.”

Anas al-Sharif is just one of 67 media professionals who were killed in 2025 while doing their jobs, identified by press freedom advocates Reporters Without Borders (RSF) in its annual report on journalists’ safety. The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) goes even further – they found 111 journalists have been killed in 2025, nearly half in Gaza.

Each one of these deaths is a tragedy, an abuse of the right of journalists to bear witness. If we accept that reporters die in Gaza, we pave the way for other regimes to consider the murder of journalists a normal instrument of war

History will only be kind to witnesses. In Gaza, it will remember the name of Anas al-Sharif, a young Al Jazeera reporter killed on 10 August 2025. It will also remember the 222 other Palestinian journalists murdered in the past two years by the Israeli army, according to the International Federation of Journalists’ own monitoring. But those who chose to eliminate these media workers will remain condemned forever.

For 24 long months now, Gaza has become the most dangerous place in the world to practise our profession. Israel prohibits foreign journalists from entering the territory, so the truth relies exclusively on Palestinian reporters – almost all of whom are members of the Palestinian Journalists’ Syndicate, affiliated to the IFJ. Too often they work without protection and without refuge for their families. And all too often, they are directly targeted.

Never before has the profession of journalism seen such a massacre in its ranks. The International Federation of Journalists, founded in 1926 and celebrating its centenary in Paris in May 2026, has recorded no comparable death toll since its formation, neither during the second world war, nor in Vietnam, Korea, Syria, Afghanistan or Iraq. Gaza has become the worst graveyard for journalists in contemporary history.

In September 2022, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) published the results of an internal investigation into the killing of Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh in Jenin four months earlier. “There is a high possibility that Ms Abu Akleh was accidentally hit by IDF gunfire that was fired toward suspects identified as armed Palestinian gunmen,” read the summary of the investigation. The IDF expressed “its deep condolences” over her death. “The freedom of the press and maintaining the safety of journalists are part of the primary components of Israeli democracy, which the IDF is committed to upholding,” it added.

This statement had little to do with the facts. Not only did numerous independent investigations indicate that Abu Akleh was killed by Israeli soldiers (a claim which the Israeli army initially denied, saying “there is a possibility, now being looked into, that reporters were hit – possibly by shots fired by Palestinian gunmen)”, but the New York Times also reported after reviewing the scene that “there were no armed Palestinians near her when she was shot”. A report by the Committee to Protect Journalists, published a year later, found that no Israeli soldier was charged in the killing of 20 journalists – 18 of them Palestinian – in the West Bank and Gaza between 2001 and 2023, making the IDF’s purported commitment to the freedom of the press look deprived of any real meaning.

Yet now we can only long for these kinds of half-truths, lies and empty words from the Israeli army. In early August, the Israeli army proudly announced that its missiles had killed Al Jazeera journalist Anas al-Sharif in Gaza City. It did not even try to pretend that it was a mistake. He was the target. Gone was the commitment to the freedom of the press. The army claimed that Sharif was a Hamas militant but shared scant evidence that he was involved in military operations during the war. The Israeli army did not bother to “express its deep condolences” for the killing of five other journalists who happened to be sleeping in the tent near Sharif and against whom no claim of Hamas affiliation was mentioned. They were collateral damage.

But even this shady justification seems rock-solid compared with the recent attack on Nasser hospital in Khan Younis which killed at least 20 Palestinians, among them five journalists – bringing the number of journalists killed in Gaza to at least 248 since the beginning of the war, according to the UN. This time around the target was not a supposed “Hamas operative”, as in the case of Sharif, but a camera. For the Israeli army, a camera, whose position was well known – journalists have used this spot for a live feed from Khan Younis for a long time – was worthy of firing two or four tank shells. If, three years ago, the army was allegedly embarrassed by the killing of a journalist, now it has become routine.

At the time of writing, at least eight journalists have been killed by Israel, adding to the over 270 Palestinian media personnel killed in Gaza during the last 21 months. Among them is photojournalist Mariam Riyad Abu Dagga, who was photographed and interviewed for this feature. She was murdered by Israel in a targeted attack on Nasser Hospital, alongside four other journalists: Ahmed Abu Aziz, Hussam al-Masri, Mohammad Salama, and Moaz Abu Taha. She was 33 years old and is survived by her son, Ghaith.

On 10 August, shortly after my peer Anas Al-Sharif was savagely killed along with an entire Al Jazeera crew that included Mohammed Qraiqea, Mohamed Nofal, and Ibrahim Thaher as well as freelancers Moamen Aliwa and Mohammed al-Khalidi, Hind Khoudary took to X, addressing media outlets worldwide. 

“I will not speak to foreign media about the killing of Palestinian journalists,” wrote the award-winning Palestinian journalist. “I will not sit on your global channels to be part of a segment you’ll forget by tomorrow.” Capturing their hypocrisy and hollow coverage in a matter of words, she added: “To you, we are just a headline—a tragedy to consume, not colleagues to defend.”

In Gaza, journalists are not just relaying the tragedies of displacement, loss, and starvation. They are experiencing it firsthand in all of its extremities, too. But when journalists are also targets, who reports on them? More than 270 Palestinian media personnel have been killed in 21 months. Who defended them? This was the duty of international journalists: to stand by their peers, to serve as their armour, to amplify their voices.

Instead, western coverage of Palestinians is marred by a repeated pattern of contradiction, claiming to uphold objective, non-partisan reporting while framing Israel’s atrocity crimes as “self-defence”. Between what is said and what is actually happening are the Palestinian journalists on the ground, who continue to personify the essence of journalism by holding power accountable and preserving memory against systemic erasure.

Recent killings have dazed the world and provoked condemnation. But little is said about the calibre of Palestinian journalism

The first time I met Al Jazeera’s Gaza team lead, Tamer Almisshal, was in July last year. His team had already buried two journalists, Hamza al-Dahdouh and Samer Abu Daqqa. The rest, he told me, were hungry. They were also dealing with trying to get hold of protective gear, threats from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the killing of family members. Ismail al-Ghoul hadn’t seen his wife and child in months and was missing them intensely. Hossam Shabat, Mohammed Qraiqea and Anas al-Sharif were asking for time to secure food in the morning before they could start reporting. Today, they are all dead.

I spoke with various members of the Gaza team while writing a profile of Gaza’s veteran reporter Wael al-Dahdouh, who lost his wife, three of his children and grandson. All spoke of their work as a duty that needed to be carried out despite the risks. Three members of that team have since been killed in a chain of assassinations. Each time I sent condolences, the response was always that the coverage would not cease. “We are continuing,” the Gaza editor told me last week, after he lost his entire Gaza City team in the targeted strike that claimed the lives of Sharif, Mohammed Nofal, Ibrahim Thaher and Qraiqea. “We will not betray their message, or their last wishes.”

As these killings dazed the world – and the response to them became mired in unproven and in some cases risibly implausible claims that some of these journalists were militants – little has been said about the calibre of journalism in Gaza. How fluent, articulate and poised its journalists are under impossible circumstances. How much they manage to capture horrific events and pain on a daily basis, in a journalistic Arabic that they have perfected to an art, while maintaining a professional, collected presence on camera. How much they manage to keep their cool. I struggled often to translate their words into English, so rich and expansive is their expression. Even Sharif’s final message, a text for the ages, loses some of its power in translation. In it, he addresses those who “choked” our breath, but the word he uses is closer to “besieged” – evoking not just physical asphyxiation but the silencing of a surveilled people’s voice.

What strikes me when I speak with journalists in and from Gaza is how evangelical and heartbreakingly idealistic they are; how much journalism to them was a duty even if it meant certain death. This is my will and my final message. If these words reach you, know that Israel has succeeded in killing me and silencing my voice.

First, peace be upon you and Allah’s mercy and blessings. Allah knows I gave every effort and all my strength to be a support and a voice for my people, ever since I opened my eyes to life in the alleys and streets of the Jabaliya refugee camp. My hope was that Allah would extend my life so I could return with my family and loved ones to our original town of occupied Asqalan (al-Majdal). But Allah’s will came first, and His decree is final.

I have lived through pain in all its details, tasted suffering and loss many times, yet I never once hesitated to convey the truth as it is, without distortion or falsification – so that Allah may bear witness against those who stayed silent, those who accepted our killing, those who choked our breath, and whose hearts were unmoved by the scattered remains of our children and women, doing nothing to stop the massacre that our people have faced for more than a year and a half.

I entrust you with Palestine – the jewel in the crown of the Muslim world, the heartbeat of every free person in this world. I entrust you with its people, with its wronged and innocent children who never had the time to dream or live in safety and peace. Their pure bodies were crushed under thousands of tons of Israeli bombs and missiles, torn apart and scattered across the walls. I urge you not to let chains silence you, nor borders restrain you. Be bridges toward the liberation of the land and its people, until the sun of dignity and freedom rises over our stolen homeland.

I entrust you to take care of my family. I entrust you with my beloved daughter, Sham, the light of my eyes, whom I never got the chance to watch grow up as I had dreamed. I entrust you with my dear son, Salah, whom I had wished to support and accompany through life until he grew strong enough to carry my burden and continue the mission. I entrust you with my beloved mother, whose blessed prayers brought me to where I am, whose supplications were my fortress and whose light guided my path. I pray that Allah grants her strength and rewards her on my behalf with the best of rewards.

I also entrust you with my lifelong companion, my beloved wife, Umm Salah (Bayan), from whom the war separated me for many long days and months. Yet she remained faithful to our bond, steadfast as the trunk of an olive tree that does not bend – patient, trusting in Allah, and carrying the responsibility in my absence with all her strength and faith. I urge you to stand by them, to be their support after Allah Almighty.

If I die, I die steadfast upon my principles. I testify before Allah that I am content with His decree, certain of meeting Him, and assured that what is with Allah is better and everlasting. O Allah, accept me among the martyrs, forgive my past and future sins, and make my blood a light that illuminates the path of freedom for my people and my family. Forgive me if I have fallen short, and pray for me with mercy, for I kept my promise and never changed or betrayed it.

Do not forget Gaza. And do not forget me in your sincere prayers for forgiveness and acceptance.

The Israel Lobby comes in many forms, and I suspect Israeli bribes do too. So in a way American funds sent to support Israel come back in the form of an information war on America, aimed at gathering more funds and lethal weaponry so that Israel can continue USURPING land, rights, and peace... and Occupation Forces can continue harassing and harming any who dare object to such blatant injustice and violence.

"Settlers" is too kind a word and too antiquated a word to properly express what modern Israeli "settlers" do.   They are heavily armed usurpers protected and empowered by a very powerful military machine that is funded in part by American taxpayers.  

"Settlers" are what people were generations ago, long before international law and The Universal Declaration of Human Rights which  emerged after the horrors of the Nazi Holocaust.  Israeli USURPERS steal land, rights, and peace.  They also steal the story and twist the facts. So far they have managed to convince American leadership to undermine and de-fund UNWRA and UNESCO.  We should be defending UNRWA and UNESCO, not de-funding them.

Local sources confirm that Israeli forces have assassinated journalist Anas Al-Sharif and several other journalists after Israeli airstrikes targeted a press tent in central Gaza, which is currently under heavy barrages of fire.

An outpouring of grief and condemnation has followed the Israeli assassination of five Al Jazeera staff in Gaza, including prominent correspondent Anas al-Sharif.

Since October 2023, Israel has killed 269 journalists in Gaza, in the deadliest conflict ever recorded for reporters.

Israel has killed Al Jazeera correspondent Anas Esharif and four of his colleagues in an airstrike on their tent outside Shifa Hospital in Gaza. This deliberate assassination of Palestinian journalists is part of Israel’s ongoing effort to silence the truth and carry out genocide in darkness.

Israel just bombed an murdered the entire Aljazeera staff in Gaza city: Correspondents Anas Al Sharif

Cameramen Ibrahim Dhaher and Mo’men Aleiwa, killed. 

 

Crew driver, Mohammad Nofal, killed. 

 

All murdered in an Israeli bombing of their TENT stationed by Al-Shifa hospital. 

 

This means, a commander gave the order, and others executed it. 

 

This should be tracked and made public, who killed the journalists. 

 

It wasn’t just a bomb. It was its manufacturer, and the Israeli commanders that are giving the order, and the soldiers saying yes and conducting the strike. 

 

All of these murderers need to be made public by name. Israeli state violence is made by people.

Tonight, August 10, Anas Sharif,   @AnasAlSharif0, renowned Palestinian journalist, & father of two was bombed to death by Israel alongside his peer, Mohammad Qaraqei. 

 

I will refrain from sharing the gruesome video of his murder, but he died in his press vest, which was mostly burned. 

 

No bulletproof vest can protect against Israeli psychopathy. Anas, like all journalists in Gaza, was killed for sharing the truth without filter. Doing what most journalists in their comfortable offices can’t— their job.
