Israel is wiping out Gaza’s journalists – and it’s no longer even hiding it. The laws of war are clear: journalists are civilians. To target them deliberately in war is to commit a war crime

Israel always boasted that it was the only country in the region to support press freedom. That boast rang hollow even before the current war. Now, it’s not even pretending. On Sunday, Israel openly and brazenly killed six journalists as they were sheltering in a tent that housed reporters and media workers.

Israel accuses one of those journalists – Al Jazeera’s Anas al-Sharif – of being a terrorist. It has not said what crime it believes the others have committed that would justify killing them. The laws of war are clear: journalists are civilians. To target them deliberately in war is to commit a war crime.

It is hardly surprising that Israel believes it can get away with murder. In the two decades preceding 7 October, Israeli forces killed 20 journalists. No one has ever been held accountable for any of those deaths, including that of the Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, whose killing in 2022 sent shock waves through the region. Abu Akleh, a dual US-Palestinian citizen, was a household name in the Middle East, just as al-Sharif became a familiar face for audiences for his coverage of Israel’s assault on Gaza.

Israel first began making threats against al-Sharif shortly after the start of the war. The journalist reported receiving multiple phone calls from officers in the Israeli army instructing him to cease coverage and leave northern Gaza, as well as voice notes on WhatsApp disclosing his location. In December 2023, an Israeli airstrike hit his family home, killing the journalist’s 90-year-old father.

A year later, the Israeli army alleged publicly that Anas al-Sharif was a terrorist – claims it repeated last month shortly after Anas al-Sharif exposed the rampant levels of starvation throughout Gaza as a result of Israel’s refusal to allow in sufficient food aid. An Israeli spokesperson accused al-Sharif of lying about the famine – despite corroboration of widespread starvation by independent and international groups.

The Committee to Protect Journalists had seen this playbook from Israel before: a pattern in which journalists are accused by Israel of being terrorists with no credible evidence. Indeed, we were so concerned that al-Sharif was being targeted that we issued a public statement urging his protection.

Instead, al-Sharif was killed alongside his colleagues in an attack that Israel has openly admitted was aimed at killing the journalist...  READ MORE  https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2025/aug/13/israel-killing-gaza-journalists-anas-al-sharif

The Guardian view on Anas al-Sharif and Gaza’s journalists: Israel is wiping out the witnesses

Monday, August 11, 2025

Dear America- Please no more Israeli GHF killing fields or other such Zionist schemes that aim to further harass and destroy the native non-Jewish population of historic Palestine.

Anas Al-Sharif- Palestinian journalist for Al Jazeera & yet another reporter targeted and killed by Israel.
 Dear America,

How many more journalists will Israel kill and then lie about why before you catch on to the fact that Israel lies?

How many more international laws and United Nations Resolutions will Israel violate day after day, decade after decade...

How much more graft and corruption will occur before our CEOs, our movie stars, our newspaper editors, our religious advisors, and our elected leaders catch on to the fact that Israel freely interferes with American elections, our mainstream media, our schools and colleges, our intelligence, our computer systems, etc... - sabotaging our democracy.

Israeli cruelty and Zionist lies are endless.  So is the suffering of children being starved to death by Israel's remorseless occupation.

Israel lies about UNRWA in order to destroy UNRWA and the Palestinian refugees that Israel has been forcibly displacing since 1948. Year after year more Palestinian men, women, and children are displaced and pushed into forced exile.

Israel could have and should have welcomed home all the Palestinian refugees long ago.   Until it does The United Nations and  UNWRA are the best option. Please no more Israeli GHF killing fields or other such Zionist schemes that aim to further harass and destroy the native non-Jewish population of historic Palestine.

Israel FIBS, deceives, misinforms, and deploys both bombs and propaganda in order to mislead insiders and outsiders.

Please FREE PALESTINE and free us all from being wage slaves aiding and abetting a huge crime against humanity.

Sincerely,

Anne Selden Annab

Since October 2023, Israel has killed 269 journalists in Gaza, in the deadliest conflict ever recorded for reporters.

Israel has killed Al Jazeera correspondent Anas Esharif and four of his colleagues in an airstrike on their tent outside Shifa Hospital in Gaza. This deliberate assassination of Palestinian journalists is part of Israel’s ongoing effort to silence the truth and carry out genocide in darkness.

UN experts call for immediate dismantling of Gaza Humanitarian Foundation: “The GHF, a non-governmental organisation created by Israel in February 2025, with US support, to allegedly distribute aid in Gaza, is an utterly disturbing example of how humanitarian relief can be exploited for covert military and geopolitical agendas in serious breach of international law...”

Our "friend" Israel does not and never has practiced the rule of fair and just laws with equal rights for all... Zionism is ?!!!!

The Israel Lobby comes in many forms, and I suspect Israeli bribes do too. So in a way American funds sent to support Israel come back in the form of an information war on America, aimed at gathering more funds and lethal weaponry so that Israel can continue USURPING land, rights, and peace... and Occupation Forces can continue harassing and harming any who dare object to such blatant injustice and violence.

"Settlers" is too kind a word and too antiquated a word to properly express what modern Israeli "settlers" do.   They are heavily armed usurpers protected and empowered by a very powerful military machine that is funded in part by American taxpayers.

"Settlers" are what people were generations ago, long before international law and The Universal Declaration of Human Rights which  emerged after the horrors of the Nazi Holocaust.  Israeli USURPERS steal land, rights, and peace.  They also steal the story and twist the facts. So far they have managed to convince American leadership to undermine and de-fund UNWRA and UNESCO.  We should be defending UNRWA and UNESCO, not de-funding them.

Don't Look Left: A Diary of Genocide by Atef Abu Saif- due out May 16, 2024 in paperback

Never in living history has such an atrocity been perpetrated in plain sight of the world's leaders and mainstream media, who have all somehow managed to give it their complete backing. Images and video clips of hourly horrors and tragedies have spread around the world, combatted by fake news propagated not by dark conspiratorial corners on the web, but by corporate media outlets and politicians. Baseless Israeli propaganda and deliberately-biased framing has been fed to journalists and repeated, without question, on the front pages of the world's newspapers and in the mouths of TV pundits and politicians. One of the few voices of Gaza to make it out into Western media has been that of writer Atef Abu Saif

Don’t Look Left by Atef Abu Saif BOOK review

Don’t Look Left by Atef Abu Saif BOOK review – in the line of fire

A Palestinian author and politician’s devastating eyewitness account of the Israel-Gaza war as he saw his relatives killed

It is hard to describe the cumulative effect this devastating chronicle has over 280 pages. It describes a mounting toll of death and destruction, with each day bringing more heartrending news of homes demolished and relatives and colleagues killed. Gradually, it makes it clear that there is no safe place in the Gaza Strip. Danger is everywhere, like the low hum of a mosquito.

Atef Abu Saif is an acclaimed Palestinian author and journalist as well as being minister for culture in the Palestinian Authority. On 7 October he found himself in Gaza purely by chance. He was due to speak at a cultural event in Khan Younis to celebrate Palestinian Heritage Day, but found himself instead at the centre of a war.... Comma Press Statement in Relation to the Cancellation of Home’s ‘Voices of Resilience’ event and Baseless Allegations

Comma is disappointed with HOME's decision to cancel our planned event for the 22 April. We are also deeply concerned about the baseless and libelous allegations against one of our Palestinian writers, Atef Abu Saif, issued by the lobby group, the Jewish Representative Council of Greater Manchester (JRC), and repeated by the Manchester Evening News. The allegations include the claims that Atef Abu Saif is a 'confirmed antisemite' and a 'holocaust denier'. This is utterly false.

The letter sent by the JRC to HOME and published on their X account, refers to an article Abu Saif wrote on 22 August 2022 in Al-Ayyam newspaper as evidence of this. Rather than deny the holocaust, he says the exact opposite: ‘Hitler's crimes against humanity cannot be forgiven or tolerated. They may be unprecedented in history in terms of their ugliness... As Palestinians, this is a fact we have not denied and will never deny. We are a people who suffer injustice, massacres, killing and displacement. We cannot accept something similar that happened to others and say it is right.’

Both Comma Press and the author absolutely refute the allegations of antisemitism. In a recent interview, Abu Saif repeated the same acknowledgment: 'The holocaust was one of the darkest moments in human history'. Neither Comma Press nor the author were approached or given any opportunity to defend themselves by either the MEN or JRC.

Atef is an award-winning writer, who has previously spoken at Hay Festival, Shubbak Festival, Manchester Literature Festival, and other high-profile events. He has been supported by English PEN, and held events in Jewish-focussed bookshops. He has been the Minister of Culture for the PA in the West Bank since 2019, and his first-hand accounts of the current genocide have been published in multiple mainstream newspapers: New York Times, Washington Post, The Guardian, Le Monde, and so on.

This character assassination cannot be allowed to stand. Legal action is currently being considered with regard to the original libel and any repetition of it.

“I Have Left, but I’m Still There”: The Last Gaza Diary

After 84 days, Atef Abu Saif left Gaza. Here, he reflects on what he endured.

Atef Abu Saif

On December 29, Atef Abu Saif, the writer and politician whose diaries from the Gaza Strip have been featured in The Nation since November, left Gaza with his son after 84 days under Israeli siege and bombardment. He crossed into Egypt, visited his niece—who was in an Egyptian hospital after losing multiple limbs in an Israeli airstrike—and began processing the horrors of the experience he had just endured.

He then wrote this diary entry. It is the last of his Gaza dispatches.

Saturday, December 30 (The Day After)

Yesterday morning, on the 84th day of the war, I was told my name and that of Yasser, my son, were included on the list of those who can leave. It all happened very suddenly... READ MORE  https://www.thenation.com/article/world/atef-abu-saif-last-gaza-diary/
