Knocking on strangers’ doors on a warm May afternoon in Trenton, New Jersey, Adam Hamawy did not seem fazed when more than a few went unanswered.

It’s his first time running for office, but this is an area where he has experience. After returning from a medical mission in Gaza in 2024, Hamawy went to Washington to describe the crisis – which he viewed as a US-funded genocide – to lawmakers, only to encounter “too many doors that were closed, that didn’t even want to listen”.

“I could only define it as a genocide, because I saw the bodies of the people that came in,” the veteran army trauma surgeon and political newcomer reflected, while walking between houses. “And it wasn’t an accident. You can’t have an accident, every single day for three years.”

On a hazy morning in November, a group of aid workers with Médecins Sans Frontières (M.S.F.), known in English as Doctors Without Borders, crossed into Gaza for a two-month mission. Jennifer Hulse, an emergency physician from the U.K., led a medical team. “We all had as many bags as we could physically carry,” Hulse said. Inside were essential supplies such as surgical tools and engine oil for generators. Her assignment was to help the Gaza Health Ministry restore access to health care in the north, where Israeli attacks had flattened nearly every building in sight.

The team first spent several days at Gaza’s sole remaining hospital focussed on pediatrics—Al-Rantisi, in Gaza City, which was barely operational after Israeli air strikes. The roof had collapsed in places. Doctors were seeing patients in a waiting room with only a few cots. “It was very cold, even inside the buildings,” Hulse told me. When a storm blew through, she mistook thunderclaps for explosions. She learned that parents sometimes arrived with the bodies of infants who seemed to have died of hypothermia. Her team quickly put together a plan to help coördinate repairs, secure new electrical generators, implement a triage system, and organize trainings for staff. “We were just trying to get it functional again,” she said.

Next, Hulse travelled to Jabalia, in the northern reaches of the Gaza Strip, where the situation was even worse. She was driven through rutted streets in which not a single building remained intact. There is almost no media coverage on people starving in Gaza and the one thing I could find doesn’t even name ISRAEL. Palestinians are being deliberately starved. It’s not a natural disaster, it’s a crime against humanity.

 

There’s never been an easier solution to mass human suffering than the starvation in Gaza. UN aid and humanitarian workers are literally sitting at the border with the supplies and expertise to help. Israel refuses. It’s a choice, it’s deliberate, it’s GENOCIDE. OPEN THE GATES.

I saw a woman today. 

No. She was not a woman. 

She was a shadow in human shape, curled in the ruins of a kitchen that no longer existed, feeding her infant an empty spoon. 

 

 Over and over.

And the child obeyed. Because hunger makes gods of mothers, even when they have nothing left to give but lies. 

 

This is not famine. This is theology. 

This is where faith is tried like meat over flame; slowly, until it screams. 

 

In Gaza, children are not raised. They are rationed. Born between airstrikes, raised under sanctions, educated in silence. 

 

Here, death is no longer a tragedy. It is a statistic. It does not come like a thief in the night. 

It comes like the postman; regularly, predictably, professionally. 

 

 They send trucks. Not enough. Never enough. Ten thousand people chase one truck, like dogs beneath the emperor’s table. 

 

And the world says, “Why do they fight like animals?” 

Because they are starving. Because they are forgotten. Because this was always the plan. 

 

Yes, the starvation is by design. 

Not just to kill, but to unmake. 

To peel back human skin until only impulse remains. So that one day, when they eat each other, the world may say, “See? We were right all along.” 

 

But I ask you: 

 

If a child starves in the dark, while men argue over borders, and priests preach of patience, and human rights organizations hold another symposium.  

 

What is the value of that child’s life? 

Less than your comfort? 

Less than your belief in a just world? 

 

 If a single child must die for your silence, if one infant must be buried beneath rubble so that your country may have good diplomatic standing, then I say: 

 

Return your progress. 

Return your civilization. 

Return your peace. 

 

I do not want it. 

 

You say, “This is war.” 

 

No. War ends. This is eternal. 

 

This is the organized execution of hope.  And somewhere in the dust, beneath the broken mosques and blood-streaked bread lines, God is watching. 

 

But I do not know if He is weeping, or choking on His own shame.

BREAKING: MSF strongly denounces Israel’s announcement to block aid into Gaza. 

 

Humanitarian aid should never be used as a tool of war. Regardless of negotiations between warring parties, people in Gaza still need an immediate and massive scale-up of humanitarian supplies.

While the overall number of trucks that entered Gaza has increased since the ceasefire started, restrictions by Israeli authorities on critical supplies, are hindering the humanitarian response. 

 

Most of the aid that entered was food and fuel, not nearly enough to meet the people’s immense needs.

Dr Issam Abu Ajwa was in the middle of performing emergency surgery on a patient with a severe abdominal injury at al-Ahli Arab hospital in central Gaza when the soldiers came for him.

“I asked them what they were doing coming into the operating theatre,” he says. “One of the soldiers pointed at me and said: ‘Are you Dr Issam Abu Ajwa?’ I said: ‘Yes, that’s me.’ And then the beating began.”

Still in his surgeons’ scrubs, the 63-year-old Abu Ajwa says he was dragged from the operating room before being handcuffed, blindfolded and stripped.

He was then put in a military truck with other doctors, nurses and medical staff and driven away from the hospital. Less than 24 hours later he was in a detention facility in Israel, beginning what he describes as months of brutal and constant violence and abuse.
