On this day in 2023, Israel carried out a terror strike on my friend Heba Zaqout’s home, killing her and two of her children, Adam and Mahmoud.

Heba was an artist and a schoolteacher.

Many of her artworks were destroyed in the strike, too.

In 2021, Heba contributed her art to a special section of Peripheries, Peripheries, Harvard Divinity School’s literary and arts journal, which I co-edited.

Her death was an immense loss, not only to her family and friends but also to the world of art and education.

May Heba’s memory, and the memory of Adam and Mahmoud, live forever.
