UNRWA welcomes statements of humanitarian pauses and announcements that restrictions on bringing humanitarian aid to #Gaza might be eased.
We hope that UNRWA will finally be allowed to bring in thousands of trucks loaded with food, medicine and hygiene supplies. They are currently in Jordan and Egypt waiting for the green light.
Opening all the crossings and flooding Gaza with assistance is the only way to avert further deepening of starvation among the people of Gaza. What’s needed is at least 500/600 trucks of basics every day.
According to our latest data 1 in every 5 children is malnourished in Gaza City. More children have reportedly died of hunger; bringing the death toll of starving people to over 100.
Our teams are ready: UNRWA has over 10,000 staff in Gaza. When aid gets in, they will give it directly and with dignity and safety to the communities we serve. We have the reach, network, know-how and trust of those communities.
Meanwhile, we call once again, for a long-term ceasefire as part of an agreement that would bring respite to starving people, an uninterrupted flow of basic supplies as well as the release of all hostages.
Turn words into action:
->Save lives now
->Allow aid in
->Stop the bombardment across the Gaza Strip.
“Why use airdrops when you can drive hundreds of trucks through the borders?,” UNRWA@JulietteTouma tells @nytimes. “It’s much easier, more effective, faster, cheaper.”
Airdrops will not reverse the deepening starvation in #Gaza.
At UNRWA, we have the equivalent of 6,000 trucks waiting for the green light. Lift the siege, open the gates and guarantee safe movements and dignified access to people in need.
