Sorrow and fury: a letter from American rabbis to President Biden... also puplished (as a paid ad) in the New York Times late January 2024

logo-rabcab

Dear President Biden,

As American rabbis, we write to you with deep sorrow and fury.

Tomorrow is the UN – designated International Holocaust Remembrance Day: a time to honor the memory of the millions of people murdered through the genocide committed by the Nazi regime, including six million of our Jewish ancestors. On this day, we honor the enormity of our losses, the impact of dehumanization and attempted annihilation on those who survived, and the still-reverberating trauma that has shaped so many of our families and communities.

With sorrow, we will also remember this as the time in which Israel was committing a genocide, aided and abetted by the United States.

We are compelled to speak with moral clarity about what is happening to Palestinians at this very moment. We do so not in spite of our histories, but because of them. We know in our bones what it means to hear Israeli officials dehumanize an entire people, to witness the Israeli military mass murder tens of thousands of Palestinians, to watch Israel systematically destroy civilian infrastructure, cultural institutions, universities, and hospitals. To see Israel purposefully deny food, medicine, and shelter to refugees.

We hold the traumatic history of our people with care and sensitivity — and know how  painful it is for Jews to grasp that a Jewish state could possibly commit a genocide. Nevertheless, we must agree with increasing numbers of scholars and international rights experts who have determined that Israel’s actions in Gaza constitute, in the words of Prof. Raz Segal, “a textbook case of genocide.”

We support and uplift South Africa’s recent application to the International Court of Justice claiming Israel is in breach of the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. And now, Palestinian human rights organizations, together with Palestinians in the US and Gaza, are bringing a case against your administration for failure to prevent, and complicity in, the Israeli government’s unfolding genocide against them, their families, and the 2.2 million Palestinians in Gaza. We stand in support of their action as well.

According to a core teaching of Jewish spiritual tradition, humanity was created in the image of God. That means that each and every human being is of infinite value. The UN 1948 Convention on Genocide was created to uphold this very idea. The Torah also teaches that there will always be moments when we must make a critical moral choice. As Deuteronomy 30:19 says, “I have put before you life and death, blessing and curse. Choose life.” President Biden, you have chosen death. Instead of using your considerable power to prevent or end this genocide, you have directly abetted it with weapons, funds and diplomatic cover.

On this day of remembrance in 2021, you noted that, “The Holocaust was no accident of history.” As you stated, “It occurred because too many governments cold-bloodedly adopted and implemented hate-fueled laws, policies, and practices to vilify and dehumanize entire groups of people, and too many individuals stood by silently. Silence is complicity.”

President Biden, what is happening right now in Gaza is no accident of history — and your complicity has been anything but silent. We call upon you to be true to your word and end U.S. complicity in Israel’s genocide against the Palestinian people.

If the words “Never Again” have any meaning at all, they must mean “Never Again for Anyone.” We fervently ask of you: please honor the word and spirit of the International Holocaust Remembrance Day by using your office to bring a ceasefire to this tragic violence — and to stop blocking efforts toward building a truly just peace for all who live between the river and the sea.

With urgency,

Jewish Voice for Peace Rabbinical Council

Dear President Biden (etc) What Others See

Israel's Apartheid Wall in Palestine

Dear President Biden (etc)

In the Middle East and beyond Arabs & Muslims etc get a steady stream of Israeli violence live streamed from Gaza, while here in the West we get polished up Zionist propaganda aimed at keeping American money & weapons flowing into Zionist hands.

The international court of justice recently ordered Israel to prevent acts of genocide by its troops in Gaza, and to allow more aid into the besieged territory.

In the Middle East and beyond they find a huge glimmer of hope in South Africa using a court of law to try to stop Israeli violence & allow aid into Gaza.

BUT here in the misguided West our elected leaders are inspired by the ICJ ruling to cut funding from international law & the main charity for Palestine refugees, UNWRA, that feeds Palestinian refugees trapped in Gaza as well as in all the many more refugee camps crowded with Palestinian families forced from their original homes & lands by Zionist soldiers and politicians since 1948.

In the Middle East and beyond they ask why Israel is allowed to "defend" itself, but Arabs and Muslims are not allowed to do so.

In the West our own homegrown terrorists are seen as separate individuals with life stories that might explain what went wrong, while we are told that Arab terrorism in the Middle East is SPONSORED BY IRAN.  Seriously, is Western intelligence so racist that we can not conceive of Arab individuals and groups being bright enough to think their own thoughts, draw their own conclusions, and then decide on their own to hate America due to our total lack of interest and empathy for the very real plight and suffering of the people of historic Palestine.

If we want to stop escalating violence & war worldwide, we have to start with our own misguided support for Israeli Apartheid in the Holy Land.

Sincerely,

Anne Selden Annab

Two more Palestinian journalists were killed in Israeli air strikes on the Gaza Strip yesterday, raising the number of media professionals killed since 7 October to 122, officials and state media said.

Israeli warplanes targeted the home of journalist Isam Al-Lulu in the town of Al-Zawayda in the central Gaza Strip, Wafa news agency reported, adding that the attack also killed Al-Lulu’s wife and two sons.

Journalist Mohammed Abdul-Fattah Atallah from Al-Resala media office was also killed in an air strike on his home in the enclave, according to the Gaza Media Office. Further details were not immediately available.

Israel has launched relentless air and ground attacks on the Gaza Strip since 7 October. More than 26,750 Palestinians have been killed and 65,636 wounded in Israeli strikes on Gaza since 7 October, the Health Ministry said in a statement today. The vast majority are children and women.

Some 114 Palestinians were killed and 249 injured in the past 24 hours, the ministry added.

For months, I’ve watched devastation from five thousand miles away. But what is the task of the diasporic witness?
Hala Alyan
Sun 28 Jan 2024 09.00 EST

A few weeks ago, I got an upper molar filling at one of those hip dental practices targeted towards millennials, all green tiles and personalized screens. In the dental chair, I watched an Anthony Bourdain episode on Beirut, then lunged for my phone as soon as I was alone.

For months, I’ve watched hundreds of clips of dead children. Men with their limbs blown off. Babies whose faces are covered in burns. Mothers cradling white-shrouded children. These children, these babies and men, are somewhere I’ve never been, somewhere my father was born, somewhere my grandparents, my uncles, my great-grandparents, lived for years. For months, I’ve watched American officials scrunch their foreheads in consternation at press conferences. My dissociation has become more norm than exception: I walk down Metropolitan Avenue in Brooklyn as though I’m gliding, as though someone is transporting my body through sheer will. I enter rooms and freeze, stop speaking mid-sentence, forgetting where I’d begun. My grief is dormant during the day, masked by alternating helplessness and frenetic bursts of energy.

The exiled has the option to look away, but that option is only an illusion: to look away is to further disconnect yourself

In the millennial dentist office, my fingers moved like their own orchestra: the swipe, the tapped bright pink heart icon, the hungry scroll through stories. This was during the ceasefire and the stories were about what was being discovered: clips of destruction, people finding their dead. This story was about the Gaza zoo. It showed a baboon starved to death. It showed a wolf whimpering and darting around in circles in fear. The animals, the zookeeper told us, were nearly all dead. The ones that remained were terrified from the bombings. They wouldn’t let us get to the animals for weeks, he said. One of the zoo staff had been shot trying. There was a close-up on a trio of Palestinian foxes, flies swatting around them. The bodies were gathered together. Their eyes were ajar. Dead.

~

The foxes shake my grief awake. I’d forgotten about zoos. I’d forgotten about animals. I let out a sob so loud someone knocks on the door to see if something is wrong. Everything OK? the technician says when I emerge. It is no longer clear where is safe to grieve Palestinian life, even Palestinian foxes, so I shake my head. Just a long day, I say in my perfect American accent.

~

PALESTINE REMEMBERED
Dear President Biden (...etc.)

It is absolutely diabolical and unjust to withdraw funding from UNWRA based on Israel accusing several UNRWA employees of allegedly taking part in the ghastly October 7th attacks on Israel.

Nothing can justify intentionally starving and tormenting an entire targeted population... or terrorism of any type, including state sponsored terrorism.

Please do not help Israel starve yet another generation of trapped & traumatized refugees based on a rumor started by a nation at war with all of Palestine and Palestinians, a nation that clearly wants both Palestinians and UNWRA gone... a nation that wants the land, but not the native non-Jewish population of that land.

Tens of thousands of Palestine refugees who lost their homes and livelihoods due to the 1948 founding of Zionist Israel continue to be displaced and in need of support, nearly 75 years on.

Jewish refugees from all over Europe have benefited from international law including but not limited to the inalienable natural and legal right to return to original homes and lands since the devastation of WWII.   However, tragically for all, Israel spent its history demonizing and refusing to respect the Palestinian refugees' inalienable natural and legal right to return to original homes and lands.

No one should be discriminated against due to their supposed race or religion.  Nor should leadership of any type be leading their followers into injustice, hate, violence, and war against "others."

The world is watching: Are we a nation that sincerely respects real democracy with the rule of fair and just laws honoring all basic human rights and international laws, or are we a nation of wage slaves for Israel's war on "others"

Sincerely,

Anne Selden Annab

CSM: Settler extremists widen campaign against Palestinians

Monitor reporters witnessed a shooting attack by West Bank settlers on Palestinian shepherds as an Israeli army jeep stood by. Officials and diplomats say the attacks further a campaign they’ve warned of for years: to push Palestinians off their lands.

Mohammed Al Araareh, a Bedouin shepherd who just weeks before had been pushed off his land by settler attacks, points to the valley where armed settlers clashed with another shepherd, in Rammun, West Bank, Jan. 20, 2024

First the Bedouin shepherd family spotted the truck, then the five armed men dressed in white. Then the gunfire started.

Israeli settlers, drawn to another shepherd’s flock grazing in the valley 200 yards below, fired what appeared to be M16 rifles in the air and toward the shepherd.

Only weeks before, the Al Araareh family was driven off their land and lost half their possessions. On Saturday, perched up the hill from the skirmish, it looked to them like they would have to pick up and move again – fast.... Serious allegations against UNRWA staff in the Gaza Strip

26 January 2024

From Philippe Lazzarini, UNRWA Commissioner-General

AMMAN,

“The Israeli Authorities have provided UNRWA with information about the alleged involvement of several UNRWA employees in the horrific attacks on Israel on 7 October.

“To protect the Agency’s ability to deliver humanitarian assistance, I have taken the decision to immediately terminate the contracts of these staff members and launch an investigation in order to establish the truth without delay.  Any UNRWA employee who was involved in acts of terror will be held accountable, including through criminal prosecution.

“UNRWA reiterates its condemnation in the strongest possible terms of the abhorrent attacks of 7 October and calls for the immediate and unconditional release of all Israeli hostages and their safe return to their families.

“These shocking allegations come as more than 2 million people in Gaza depend on lifesaving assistance that the Agency has been providing since the war began. Anyone who betrays the fundamental values of the United Nations also betrays those whom we serve in Gaza, across the region and elsewhere around the world”.

UNRWA is the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East. The United Nations General Assembly established UNRWA in 1949 with a mandate to provide humanitarian assistance and protection to registered Palestine refugees in the Agency’s area of operations pending a just and lasting solution to their plight.

UNRWA operates in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, The Gaza Strip, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria.

Tens of thousands of Palestine refugees who lost their homes and livelihoods due to the 1948 conflict continue to be displaced and in need of support, nearly 75 years on.

UNRWA helps Palestine Refugees achieve their full potential in human development through quality services it provides in education, health care, relief and social services, protection, camp infrastructure and improvement, microfinance, and emergency assistance. UNRWA is funded almost entirely by voluntary contributions.  https://www.unrwa.org/newsroom/official-statements/serious-allegations-against-unrwa-staff-gaza-strip
